In October 2016, telling Google Assistant “I’m feeling lucky” could start a short, multiplayer trivia game on the original Google Pixel and Pixel XL. It was a playful, Trivial Pursuit-like Easter egg—not a confirmed feature of today’s Gemini-powered Pixels.

How the Pixel Assistant trivia game worked

After activating Google Assistant, users could say “I’m feeling lucky” to launch the game. Assistant asked how many people were playing, then hosted questions as participants took turns answering. The player with the highest score at the end won. The October 18, 2016 report described the experience as a short, game-show-style diversion, rather than a deep or elaborate game. Phandroid’s original report documents the command and its basic flow.

The report does not establish a maximum player count, a fixed number of questions, or specific question categories. Those details should not be assumed from the description of it as trivia.

Why it was associated with the Google Pixel

Google Assistant’s latest version was initially available on the forthcoming Pixel and Pixel XL, so the Easter egg was presented as one of the new assistant’s personality-driven features. That launch context does not mean the game remained Pixel-exclusive: later coverage described Assistant reaching more Android phones and noted the trivia prompt there as well. PhoneArena’s later report covers that broader availability.

  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

How it differed from Google Search’s “I’m Feeling Lucky”

Google Search’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” button traditionally took a user directly to the top result for a query. In Assistant, the same familiar wording acted as a trigger for a trivia game. The joke was in repurposing a Search phrase as a game-show invitation; the two experiences had different functions.

Was it really Trivial Pursuit?

It is accurate to call the feature Trivial Pursuit-like or a trivia-game Easter egg. The contemporary report used the board game as a comparison, but does not establish that Google licensed the brand, used its questions, or reproduced its rules. It was Assistant-hosted trivia, not a verified official Trivial Pursuit game.

  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

The Google Allo exception

The preview version of Assistant in Google Allo did not start the trivia game when given the phrase, according to the 2016 report. It reportedly responded conversationally instead. That distinction matters: an early Assistant feature on Pixel should not be assumed to have worked identically in Allo or across every Google device.

Can you still play it on a Pixel?

The game is documented as a 2016 Google Assistant Easter egg, but its continued operation on current Pixel phones is unverified. Google’s current Pixel guidance says Gemini is the default assistant on Pixel 9 and later, and notes that some features previously available in Google Assistant are not supported in Gemini. Google does not document Lucky Trivia as a Gemini feature, so there is no basis to promise that the old phrase still launches it.

If you try “Hey Google, I’m feeling lucky” on a modern Pixel, Gemini may open and respond normally, interpret the phrase another way, or fail to recognize the old game trigger. What happens can vary with the phone, software, active assistant, account, language, and region. Google says Gemini is available for download on Pixel devices with at least 2 GB of RAM and Android 10 or later; availability and capabilities can also depend on language, country, and account type.

If you want to investigate the old behavior

  1. Check which assistant is active. On eligible devices, Google says you can switch from Gemini to Google Assistant through the Gemini app’s settings if a feature you need is unsupported. See Google’s instructions for switching assistants.
  2. With Google Assistant active, open it and try the historically documented phrase: “I’m feeling lucky.” Contemporary reporting also prefaced it with “OK Google,” but alternate prompts such as “Play trivia” are not established as equivalent triggers.
  3. Treat the result as a test, not a guaranteed feature. Google documents Assistant continuing on some non-mobile devices, while eligible Android phones can use Gemini in its place; the available documentation does not confirm the game on either current Pixels or those other devices.

Why the Easter egg mattered

Lucky Trivia was not notable for sophisticated gameplay. It showed how Google Assistant could do more than answer searches or execute commands: it could host a small shared activity, keep track of turn-taking, and give its voice interface a bit of character. That made it a memorable Pixel-era Easter egg, even though its present-day availability is not established.
