If the microphone fails outside Apex, troubleshoot the headset, connection, permissions, or platform first. When several squad members lose chat at once, check EA and platform service status before changing drivers or reinstalling.
Identify the symptom first
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| The microphone fails in Windows, a console party, or another app | Mute state, connection, permissions, driver, controller jack, or hardware failure |
| It works everywhere except Apex | Apex input selection, voice-chat settings, routing, virtual-audio software, or a game-side fault |
| Teammates hear you, but you cannot hear them | Incoming volume, output device, chat mixer, party routing, or teammates’ settings |
| The mic icon appears, but nobody hears speech | Wrong input, threshold or gain problem, muted hardware, virtual device, or temporary voice-chat fault |
| Open Mic works but Push to Talk does not | Incorrect or intercepted key binding; on PC, EA documents T as the default key |
| The problem began after adding a headset, webcam, controller, or interface | Windows or the game selected a different input |
| Only Bluetooth fails | Pairing or hands-free-profile switching |
| Several squad members are affected | Apex or platform service problem is more likely than local hardware |
Do this eight-minute checklist
- Flip the headset boom down and check its inline, ear-cup, controller, keyboard, or hardware-mixer mute controls. Confirm a wireless headset has battery power and its USB receiver is paired.
- Reconnect the headset, try another USB port or controller, and re-pair Bluetooth if applicable.
- Test the microphone outside Apex.
- Choose that same physical microphone in Windows or the console’s input settings.
- Enable platform microphone and communication permissions.
- In Apex, enable voice chat and select the exact input device.
- Use Open Mic with a low threshold for the test, then restart Apex.
- If multiple players are affected, check official EA and platform status channels before reinstalling.
Fix Apex voice-chat settings
Enable voice chat
From the lobby, select the settings cog in the lower-right corner, then open Gameplay, scroll to Accessibility, and set Disable Voice Chat to Off. The wording is inverted: Off means voice chat is enabled. EA’s current instructions are documented at EA Help’s Apex voice-chat guide.
Select and test the input
- Open Settings → Audio.
- Set Voice Chat Input Device to the actual headset or microphone instead of Default when you know which device you want.
- Set Voice Chat Record Mode to Open Mic.
- Temporarily lower Open Mic Record Threshold. Lower values detect quieter speech but also transmit more room, fan, and keyboard noise.
- Speak normally and watch for the voice indicator. Ask a teammate to confirm intelligible audio.
- Make sure Incoming Voice Chat Volume is above zero if you cannot hear others.
After the test succeeds, raise the threshold until background noise is controlled or switch to Push to Talk. EA says Push to Talk is PC-only and uses T by default; verify the binding if holding T produces no transmission. A rebound key, overlay, macro, unfocused game window, or keyboard-layout utility can intercept it. See EA’s PC accessibility controls.
PC: prove the microphone works before changing Apex
Run the Windows recording test
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, select the intended microphone.
- Open its properties, choose Start test, speak normally, select Stop test, and play the recording.
- Adjust Input volume if the recording is silent or extremely quiet.
Microsoft documents this path in its microphone test instructions. If the test fails, reconnect the headset, try another USB port, cable, or controller, confirm the device appears in the input list, update or reinstall its driver, and test it on another device. Replace the headset only after ruling out the computer, console jack, and controller.

Allow desktop microphone access
On Windows 11, open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and enable Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. On Windows 10, use Settings → Privacy → Microphone and enable device, app, and desktop-app access. Apex is a desktop application, so it may not appear as an individual app switch. Microsoft’s details are in the microphone-permissions guide. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025; that date does not itself prevent Apex voice chat, but unsupported systems may lack current fixes.
Remove routing and virtual-device variables
Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer and inspect application-specific assignments where available. Close Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA Broadcast, OBS, SteelSeries Sonar, Voicemod, Logitech G Hub voice features, browser tabs using the microphone, Zoom, Teams, Skype, and other recording software. These programs do not always lock a microphone, but virtual devices, exclusive-mode behavior, processing chains, and per-app routing can send Apex the wrong device or silence.
- Close those applications.
- Reconnect the headset before launching the game.
- Restart Apex.
- Select the physical microphone directly under Voice Chat Input Device.
- Test Open Mic.
- Re-enable processing software one application at a time only after ordinary chat works.
Distinguish input from output: selecting the correct speakers does not select the microphone. Duplicate entries such as Microphone Array, NVIDIA Broadcast, Sonar Microphone, and Headset Microphone are not interchangeable.

Drivers, launchers, and connection types
Update headset firmware and audio drivers, then restart Windows. Repair or verify Apex files in Steam or the EA app after local tests have passed. Wired headsets remove battery and pairing variables but still depend on the USB port, splitter, controller jack, or console adapter. Wireless USB models depend on receiver pairing, firmware, battery, and USB routing. Bluetooth adds pairing and hands-free-profile variables, especially on PC, so use a known-good wired or USB setup as a diagnostic control.
PlayStation troubleshooting
PS5
- Press the DualSense mute button once; confirm the microphone is not muted.
- Open PS5 microphone settings, select the intended input device, adjust microphone level, and run the system voice test.
- Check whether you are in PlayStation party chat instead of Apex game chat.
- Review the game/chat audio balance and output device.
- Quit and relaunch Apex after changing the headset or party state.
- Check account, age, privacy, and communication restrictions.
See Sony’s current controls for input devices, mute, and microphone level at PlayStation PS5 Support.
PS4
Use the same checks—input device, microphone level, headset connection, party-versus-game chat, output routing, and account restrictions—but menu names vary with firmware and headset model. Do not assume PS5 labels or controller behavior apply exactly to PS4.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Test the headset in an Xbox party and confirm the console detects its microphone.
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch and the controller connection.
- In Xbox Settings, search for privacy, communication, multiplayer, and headset; labels change across system versions.
- Leave or adjust party chat when you intend to use Apex game chat.
- Quit and relaunch Apex after changing the headset or party.
- Check Xbox service status if several players lose chat together.
EA’s FAQ directs Xbox-specific technical issues to Microsoft and notes that relevant communication controls exist outside the game: EA Apex Legends FAQ.
Nintendo Switch
Apex voice chat is handled in the game and does not use the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. Use a compatible headset, verify its microphone and connection, and test another supported headset if possible. Bluetooth pairing and audio behavior can require Nintendo-specific support; EA directs Bluetooth-audio cases to Nintendo in its voice-chat guide.
If you cannot hear teammates
That is an output problem, not proof that your microphone is broken. Raise Apex’s Incoming Voice Chat Volume, verify the headset output device, check console chat/game balance, and confirm party chat is not receiving audio while Apex sends it elsewhere. Also check that teammates are not muted and that an output device such as speakers is not selected while chat is routed to a disconnected headset.

When an outage is more likely
Check official EA support and service channels, then the relevant PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo status page. Note whether the failure affects one account, one platform, one party, multiple teammates, or both incoming and outgoing chat. Community posts can reveal patterns but do not establish a universal outage; for example, reports on Reddit are anecdotal. During a suspected outage, avoid deleting configuration files, changing drivers, or reinstalling until service is reported restored.
Last-resort recovery
- Restart the console or PC and the headset.
- Update platform software and headset firmware.
- Repair or verify Apex files through Steam or the EA app.
- Test a known-good headset or controller on the same system.
- Reinstall Apex only after the system test, permissions, input selection, routing, and service status have been checked.
- Contact EA, Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo according to where the failure occurs.
Unsupported edits to Apex configuration files are not a reliable first-line fix: paths vary, updates can invalidate them, and unrelated settings may reset. Prefer supported Windows, console, and in-game controls.
When replacement hardware is justified
Buy a replacement only when the microphone fails system or console testing, another headset works on the same device, and the cable, controller port, USB port, receiver, and mute state have been ruled out. A known-compatible wired headset is the clearest diagnostic replacement because it removes wireless pairing and battery variables. Examples include the HyperX Cloud III wired headset and Logitech G ASTRO A10; verify connector and platform compatibility before buying. Wireless options such as the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 or Sony PULSE 3D add pairing, firmware, battery, and platform variables. Prices, stock, bundles, and regional compatibility change, so check the official product page at purchase time.
