First identify whether only Fortnite stops, whether the whole device locks up, or whether the game merely pauses while reconnecting. Then check Epic’s status channels and follow the least destructive fix for your platform.
Identify what “freezing” means
Different symptoms point to different causes. Record what happens before changing settings:

Check whether Fortnite is having an incident
Before reinstalling or changing Windows settings, check these channels in order:
- Epic Games Public Status
- Fortnite Status
- Fortnite Community Issues
- Fortnite News
- Fortnite Status social updates, when available.
Epic directs players to these channels for known incidents and workarounds (Epic’s live-issues guide). “All systems operational” only describes the services shown there; it does not rule out a newly emerging, regional, platform-specific, or mode-specific bug.

Quick checks for every platform
- Restart Fortnite and install any pending game update.
- Install pending Windows or console-system updates.
- Note whether the freeze happens in the lobby, loading screen, a match, replay, Creative, or every mode.
- Check whether another demanding game freezes on the same device.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices and temporarily disable overlays or recording tools.
Fix Fortnite freezing on PC
1. Record your configuration
Write down your Windows version, GPU and driver version, CPU, installed RAM, rendering mode, affected mode, update timing, and whether an external monitor, controller, headset, overlay, or USB device is involved. This prevents unrelated changes from being mixed together and gives Epic Support useful evidence.
2. Verify requirements and update software
Confirm that the PC meets Fortnite’s current requirements, then update Fortnite, Epic Games Launcher, Windows, and the graphics driver. Epic’s PC troubleshooting guide starts with requirements and updates before more destructive remedies.
3. Verify Fortnite’s files
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite, click its three-dot menu, and choose Manage.
- Select Verify and wait for validation and repair to finish.
Epic says verification checks damaged or altered files without affecting saved data (file-verification instructions). Use it especially after an interrupted update, crash during patching, or corrupted-data error.
4. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
- Exit Fortnite and quit Epic Games Launcher from the system tray.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and openEpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430if they exist. - Relaunch the launcher.
These are launcher cache folders, not the game installation. Epic documents this process at clear the Launcher cache on PC.

5. Test another rendering mode
Epic identifies DirectX 12 as a possible source of crashes, freezes, black screens, and shader stutter on some configurations. Its graphics guidance documents this launcher argument:
-d3d12 -es31
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Settings.
- Expand Fortnite.
- Enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
- Enter
-d3d12 -es31and launch the game.
Remove the argument and retest if stability gets worse. Performance Mode, DirectX 11, and DirectX 12 are not universally best; results depend on the GPU, driver, hardware, and current build. See Epic’s graphics troubleshooting.
6. Rebuild the shader cache when DX12 stutter is the main symptom
Shader-cache clearing is most relevant when the problem began after a Fortnite or driver update, the first match is much worse than later matches, and the game stutters rather than locking the entire PC. Epic notes that the first match can stutter again while shaders compile after the cache is cleared (DX12 shader guidance). That expected first-run work is not automatically a permanent freeze.
7. Update or roll back the GPU driver
Install a current driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel if yours is old. If freezing began immediately after an update, test the previous stable driver instead. Use a clean installation only when ordinary updating does not help; avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.

8. Select the dedicated GPU on a laptop
For systems with integrated and dedicated graphics, assign Fortnite to the high-performance processor. Typical paths are NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings, AMD Radeon settings → Fortnite → High Performance, or Windows Graphics settings. Labels vary by driver version.
9. Reduce load as a diagnostic test
Set Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%, then test. Also try borderless or windowed mode, a frame-rate cap matched to the display, and lower shadows, effects, view distance, and textures. Disable Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording, and streaming overlays. Restore settings gradually after stability improves. Epic’s low-frame-rate guidance is available at troubleshooting low frame rate in Fortnite.
10. Check heat, power, storage, and background software
- If freezing begins after 10–30 minutes, fans become unusually loud, or performance drops first, clear vents, remove dust, and use the PC on a hard, ventilated surface.
- Disable antivirus conflicts, RGB and motherboard utilities, VPNs, hardware monitors, overclocks, and undervolts for a controlled test. Re-enable normal services afterward.
- Keep substantial free space for updates and temporary files. If verification repeatedly finds corruption, test another drive and use manufacturer or SMART diagnostics.
Epic discusses overheating, background applications, drive checks, and related remedies in its PC troubleshooting sequence. Do not assume a minimum-requirements PC is stable at every resolution, frame rate, or quality setting.
11. Reinstall only after targeted tests
Reinstall when files repeatedly fail verification, the launcher cannot repair the installation, or the game is on a problematic drive. Reinstallation is unlikely to fix a confirmed outage, overheating, bad RAM, or a broken driver by itself. Epic’s broader launcher guidance is at troubleshooting the Epic Games Launcher.

Fix Fortnite freezing on PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch
1. Update both game and system
Install the Fortnite update and the latest console software. Epic’s console troubleshooting guide links to platform-specific update instructions.
2. Clear the platform cache
Use the current PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo instructions linked by Epic. Clearing temporary cache is different from deleting saved data, rebuilding a database, initializing storage, or factory-resetting the console.
3. Power-cycle the console
Perform a full power cycle, not just a quick return to the home screen. Do not jump to database rebuilding or a factory reset as a first-line Fortnite fix.
4. Reinstall Fortnite if necessary
- PlayStation: Highlight Fortnite, press Options, and choose Delete.
- Xbox Series X|S: Open My Games & Apps, highlight Fortnite, press Menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Nintendo Switch: Highlight Fortnite, press +, choose Manage Software, then delete.
Progress and purchases are tied to the Epic account, so confirm the linked account before changing account settings or reinstalling.

5. Escalate platform-wide failures
If the console freezes in several games, after waking from rest mode, or with external storage and accessories attached, the issue is broader than Fortnite. Epic directs persistent console problems to PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

| The entire PC freezes | Investigate GPU drivers, heat and power, RAM, storage, overclocks, and clean-boot conflicts. |
| Freezes last only seconds | Check packet loss and jitter, shader compilation, asset streaming, frametime spikes, downloads, and storage performance. |
| Started immediately after an update | Check official issue channels, verify files, rebuild shaders when appropriate, test drivers and another rendering mode, and wait for a confirmed hotfix. |
| Everyone in a party freezes together | Check server, matchmaking, region, and mode status before asking every player to reinstall. |
Distinguish lag from a client or hardware freeze
Normal average ping does not rule out packet loss, jitter, Wi-Fi interference, or brief connection drops. Compare Fortnite’s network statistics with a wired connection or another device. Conversely, falling FPS while audio continues points toward CPU/GPU load, while a frozen Fortnite window alongside usable Discord and Windows points toward the client or driver. A complete system lockup is evidence to investigate hardware and system stability, not proof that Epic’s servers are at fault.
Advanced PC diagnosis
Use these steps only after the targeted fixes above:
- Check Windows Reliability History and Event Viewer for display-driver resets, hardware errors, or application faults at the freeze time.
- Monitor temperatures, clocks, and power behavior with reputable manufacturer or operating-system tools.
- Run the PC maker’s memory and storage diagnostics, especially if other applications also freeze.
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM settings to stock; remove overclocks and undervolts.
- Perform a clean-boot test to isolate services, then restore disabled security and device services.
These tests identify wider instability; none is a guaranteed Fortnite-specific fix.
When to wait and when to contact support
Waiting is reasonable when the issue began with a specific update, affects multiple platforms or regions, appears in Epic’s Community Issues or status channels, and local troubleshooting has no effect. Contact Epic Support or your platform maker when the problem persists and provide:

- Error text or crash code, screenshots or video, and whether other games are affected.
- On PC, GPU model, driver version, Windows version, and rendering mode.
- Whether verification, cache clearing, driver changes, power cycling, or reinstalling changed the behavior.
What not to do yet
- Do not factory-reset a console for an isolated Fortnite freeze.
- Do not edit the Windows registry, BIOS, or voltage settings without evidence and a recovery plan.
- Do not delete arbitrary Epic or Fortnite folders when clearing the launcher cache.
- Do not buy a router, GPU, cooling pad, SSD, or paid repair service before identifying network, thermal, storage, or hardware evidence.
