The original ASUS ROG Ally X launched in 2024: ASUS announced it on June 2, and U.S. retail launch coverage reported a July 22 release. Its U.S. launch MSRP was $799.99. It is a released Windows handheld, not an upcoming device—and it is distinct from the newer ROG Xbox Ally X announced in 2025.

Release date, price and availability

ASUS announced the ROG Ally X on June 2, 2024, and gave it a U.S. launch MSRP of $799.99. Contemporary launch reporting gives July 22, 2024 as the U.S. retail release date; that retail date is distinct from ASUS’s announcement date. Windows Central’s launch coverage reports the July date.

The $799.99 figure is the U.S. launch MSRP, not a promise of today’s price. Current retail pricing and stock depend on country, seller and configuration; check local listings rather than treating the MSRP as a current deal. ASUS’s current U.S. specifications include 1TB and 2TB configurations, but that does not establish that both are sold in every market.

What changed from the original ROG Ally?

The 2024 Ally X is principally a refinement of the original Ally, not a new APU generation. It keeps the Ryzen Z1 Extreme found in the higher-end original Ally, while expanding battery capacity and memory and changing the storage format, ports, cooling and controls.

Feature ROG Ally X (2024) Original ROG Ally
Processor AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Ryzen Z1 Extreme in the higher-end configuration; the original range also included a Z1 model
Memory 24GB LPDDR5X-7500, onboard 16GB configuration
Internal SSD format M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2230
Battery capacity 80Wh 40Wh
USB connectivity USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and USB4 Type-C One USB-C port plus a proprietary XG Mobile interface
Cooling and controls Redesigned cooling, grips, joysticks, D-pad and triggers Original chassis and control design
Weight Approximately 1.49 pounds (678g) Not stated in the cited ASUS launch materials
U.S. launch price $799.99 $699.99 for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme model, according to ASUS’s launch announcement

The memory increase is 24GB versus 16GB—50% more capacity, not double. Because the integrated Radeon GPU shares system memory with Windows and games, the larger pool can offer more room for games with high memory or texture demands. It does not change the graphics architecture. The original Ally’s $699.99 figure is its U.S. launch price; current street prices vary. ASUS’s original Ally announcement gives the launch-price context.

Does the Ally X deliver a major performance upgrade?

Not in the sense of a new processor generation: the Ryzen Z1 Extreme remains the performance ceiling. The Ally X’s extra memory may help some demanding games, while its larger battery and improved cooling design can change how long and comfortably it can be used. ASUS says the redesigned fans move up to 24% more air and the panel can stay up to 6°C cooler to the touch under its stated test conditions; these are manufacturer claims, not universal independent measurements.

ASUS lists a configurable 9–30W TDP range. The device’s performance and power draw vary with the game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, drivers, Windows updates, thermals and memory allocation. Battery and plugged-in operation can also differ; 30W Turbo mode generally requires adequate power input. There is no single useful FPS figure for every game, so compare results only when the game, resolution, preset, TDP and test configuration are specified.

  • [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
  • [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 1TB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

Battery life: capacity is fixed, runtime is not

The 80Wh battery doubles the original Ally’s 40Wh capacity, but it does not guarantee twice the runtime in every game or setting. ASUS claims more than 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming and up to 14.5 hours of Netflix video playback under its test conditions. These manufacturer figures are not universal runtime promises. Brightness, frame rate, game load, TDP, wireless use and Windows background activity all affect how long a charge lasts. High brightness and 25–30W settings can still drain the battery quickly.

Display: 1080p and 120Hz, but not OLED

The Ally X keeps the original Ally’s 7-inch 1080p IPS-level display rather than switching to OLED. Its 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium, 500-nit brightness and 1080p resolution are useful features, but the panel does not offer OLED contrast or deep blacks. Native 1080p can also be demanding for an integrated GPU. Depending on the game and the balance you want between image quality, performance and battery life, 720p or 900p with upscaling may be a more efficient setting.

Storage, memory and microSD upgrades

Internal SSD

The M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe format is more conventional and generally easier to source than the original Ally’s shorter M.2 2230 format. The SSD can be replaced, but users should confirm drive dimensions and compatibility, back up important data and have a Windows recovery plan before opening the device. Installation can create damage or warranty-service complications depending on local terms and service policy; check ASUS’s policy for your region.

Memory is onboard, not a normal user-upgrade component. Choose the memory configuration you need when buying. ASUS’s current U.S. page lists 1TB and 2TB versions, while its launch materials specified 1TB.

  • DESIGN FEATURES: Touchscreen functionality with Wi-Fi connectivity in a portable handheld form factor, finished in sleek black

microSD card

The UHS-II reader is rated by ASUS for a theoretical transfer rate of up to 312MB/s. That is a reader capability, not a guarantee that any card will reach that speed: actual performance depends on the card’s rating, reader behavior, filesystem and workload, including sustained writes. A faster card will not fix slowdowns caused by other factors such as shader compilation. A microSD card is handy for extra space, but the internal SSD is preferable for the most demanding games.

Ports, docks and everyday Windows use

Replacing the original Ally’s proprietary XG Mobile interface, the Ally X has two USB-C ports: one USB 3.2 Gen 2 and one USB4. ASUS describes the USB4 port as Thunderbolt 4 compliant, with DisplayPort and USB Power Delivery support. That broadens options for docks, displays and storage, but does not guarantee that every Thunderbolt accessory will work without limitations; check the accessory’s requirements. The included adapter is 65W USB-C. A dock or charger should support the needed USB-C Power Delivery profile; a generic phone charger may charge slowly or fail to support the highest power mode.

Windows 11 Home gives the Ally X access to multiple PC storefronts, including Steam, Xbox, Epic, GOG and EA, but it also brings Windows updates, launchers, notifications, controller mappings and desktop navigation to a handheld. Armoury Crate SE provides ASUS’s game library and device-control layer; its features and behavior can change with software updates. Buyers who want a more console-like interface should weigh that flexibility against the extra setup and maintenance.

How it compares with other handhelds

Device Consider it if… Main trade-off for an Ally X shopper
Steam Deck OLED You mainly play Steam games, value OLED image quality and prefer a console-like operating experience. It is less suitable if you depend on Windows-only launchers, certain anti-cheat systems or broad Windows storefront compatibility. Neither device is universally faster; results depend on the game, OS, resolution and settings. Steam Deck OLED details.
Lenovo Legion Go You want a larger screen, detachable controllers or a built-in kickstand. Its larger size and weight can be a poor fit if portability is a priority. Lenovo Legion Go.
MSI Claw You are comparing Windows handheld designs and are willing to check the exact model and processor generation. Model, processor, price and performance differ; compare the specific version available in your market rather than treating the name as one fixed specification. MSI handhelds.
ROG Xbox Ally X You want to assess ASUS’s newer Xbox-branded handheld and its processor and software positioning. This is a separate 2025 product, not a revision or rename of the 2024 Ally X. Compare its exact specifications, price and local availability separately. ASUS’s 2025 announcement.

Who should buy the 2024 ROG Ally X?

  • New Windows-handheld buyers: Consider it if access to multiple PC storefronts, 24GB of memory, a replaceable 2280 SSD and two USB-C ports matter more than OLED or the lightest possible device.
  • Existing original Ally owners: The upgrade is most compelling if the 40Wh battery, 16GB memory, 2230 SSD format or original port selection is limiting your use. If you mostly play plugged in and do not need those changes, the shared Z1 Extreme platform makes the upgrade less compelling.
  • Steam Deck owners: Switch only if Windows compatibility or access to non-Steam ecosystems is a priority. Stay with the Deck if OLED and a more console-like Steam experience matter more.
  • Buyers choosing between the two Ally X names: Confirm whether a listing is for the 2024 ROG Ally X (RC72LA) or the separate 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X before comparing specifications or price.
  • Deal seekers: The 2024 model is easier to justify at a substantial discount from its $799.99 U.S. launch MSRP, provided its non-OLED display and older processor platform suit your needs. Current prices require a retailer and market check.
