Cat5e is also sufficient for the console; Cat7 and Cat8 generally cost more without improving PS4 gameplay. Ethernet can make a connection more consistent than Wi-Fi, but no cable can guarantee lower ping or eliminate lag.

Sony lists the PS4 wired interface as supporting 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T, so its device-side wired link supports gigabit Ethernet. Sony’s PS4 specifications establish that capability; they do not mean your internet plan or game connection will run at gigabit speeds.
Does the PS4 need a special Ethernet cable?
No. The PS4 uses a standard LAN port and does not require a PlayStation-branded or gaming-specific cable. Look for a conventional Ethernet patch cable with an RJ45 plug at each end. Sony’s PS4 internet connection instructions describe connecting the console to a router by LAN cable.
Cat5e vs. Cat6 vs. higher categories
Cat5e: enough for a PS4
A correctly made, undamaged Cat5e cable can serve the PS4’s gigabit-capable interface. Choose it when you already have one or when it is meaningfully cheaper than a comparable Cat6 cable. Cat5e is not inherently too slow for online gaming.

Cat6: the sensible default for a new purchase
Cat6 is widely available and a good general-purpose choice for a new home patch cable. Its label does not promise lower game latency than a working Cat5e cable. The practical gains come from a reliable wired link, especially if it replaces weak or congested Wi-Fi.
Cat6A, Cat7 and Cat8: buy for other needs, not PS4 ping
Cat6A may make sense for a fixed installation or equipment you intend to reuse in a higher-speed network. Cat7 or Cat8 is generally poor value for a PS4-only connection: a higher cable category does not change the console’s supported Ethernet interface or the route to a game server.
What to check before buying
- Conductor material: Prefer pure copper, particularly for long or permanent runs. Avoid copper-clad aluminum (CCA) when a product’s construction is unclear; pure copper is the safer choice for a robust installation.
- Connectors: Choose standard RJ45 male connectors on both ends, with secure plugs and intact locking tabs.
- Length: Measure the route and allow a little slack rather than stretching the cable tight.
- Build: Look for a sound jacket and strain relief. Snagless boots can help protect the plug latch, but are not a gaming-performance feature.
- UTP or shielded: UTP is generally suitable for an ordinary indoor home run. Shielding may be worth considering near significant electrical interference, but the installation and grounding need to suit shielded cable; it can also be stiffer and costlier.
- Round or flat: A conventional round cable is a good general-purpose choice. Flat cable can be convenient to conceal along trim, but quality and durability vary by product; it is not automatically unreliable.
- Product claims: Be wary of vague conductor specifications, unusually thin cables paired with extravagant claims, and claims that gold plating, “gaming” branding or a high category number reduces lag.
Sony’s support guidance recommends shielded twisted-pair LAN cable of Category 5e or higher for the connection discussed in its article. That is Sony’s guidance for that context, not proof that every indoor PS4 setup requires shielded cable. Sony’s cable guidance is worth checking if your installation conditions make shielding relevant.

Choose a practical cable length

These are practical shopping examples, not requirements. Route the cable away from foot traffic where possible; avoid crushing it under furniture, sharp kinks, tight bends or staples. For a very long permanent run, use appropriate solid-core in-wall cable and properly installed jacks rather than treating a patch cable as building wiring.

How to connect Ethernet to a PS4
- Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the PS4’s LAN port and the other into a LAN port on your router, modem-router gateway or network switch. The port location varies by PS4 model; Sony shows model-specific locations on its connection support page.
- On the console, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Use a LAN Cable, then choose Easy.
- When prompted, select Test Internet Connection.
The PS4 should normally obtain network settings from the router automatically. The test reports items such as IP address, internet connection, PlayStation Network sign-in, NAT type and estimated connection speeds. Treat its speed figures as a diagnostic estimate, not a definitive measurement of cable capacity or game-server performance.
When to use Custom
Choose Custom only when you have a specific network reason, such as manually setting an IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU or proxy. Sony lists these options in its PS4 setup guidance and advises users who are unsure to consult their ISP or network administrator. Random DNS or MTU values copied from a forum are not a substitute for a sound wired connection or a properly configured router.

What Ethernet can—and cannot—improve
Wired Ethernet avoids the radio link between the console and router. That can reduce problems caused by weak Wi-Fi signal, interference, congestion or retransmissions, and may make latency more consistent. Sony says Ethernet can provide lower latency than Wi-Fi for Remote Play, while noting that shared connection quality and speed still affect the result. Sony’s Remote Play guidance describes those qualifications.
Do not equate download speed with game responsiveness. Throughput is how much data can be transferred; ping is the time for data to travel to a destination and back; jitter is variation in that delay; packet loss means some data does not arrive. Game latency also depends on server distance, ISP routing, router queueing, household traffic and the game service itself. If your Wi-Fi is already strong and uncongested, the ping change after switching to Ethernet may be small.
Troubleshoot a PS4 Ethernet connection
The PS4 does not detect the wired connection
- Check that both plugs are fully seated and that neither plug latch is broken.
- Try another LAN port on the router or switch.
- Test with a second, known-good Ethernet cable.
- Check for a link light on the router port, if the equipment has one.
- Restart the router and PS4, then repeat Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use a LAN Cable > Easy.
- Check PlayStation Network service status if the connection test fails around sign-in or service access.
Sony’s connection troubleshooting guidance also points users toward service status when an outage or maintenance may be involved.

It connects, but NAT is strict
A new cable does not change the router’s NAT behavior. Check whether the network has double NAT—for example, a modem-router plus a second router—or whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. UPnP or port-forwarding changes are router-specific; do not open ports indiscriminately. Use current instructions from PlayStation or the relevant game publisher for the service you are troubleshooting.
Downloads are still slow
Possible bottlenecks include the ISP plan, PlayStation download-server load, other household traffic, router congestion, a 100 Mbps router or switch port, console background activity or a failing storage drive. Compare the PS4 with a known-good device on the same router; the console’s test result alone cannot identify which part is limiting throughput.
Wired seems worse than Wi-Fi, or speed improves but gameplay does not
Try another cable and router port, and check whether the equipment is linking at gigabit rather than 100 Mbps. A powerline adapter in the path may be the weak link. Wi-Fi might be using a closer access point or a different network path, and a router may apply different traffic rules to wired and wireless clients. A throughput test can improve while game ping stays similar because its test server and the game server are different destinations.

When the router is too far away
- Ethernet switch: If the router is nearby but its ports are full, connect a standard unmanaged gigabit switch to the router, then connect the PS4 to the switch.
- Mesh node: A nearby mesh node with an Ethernet port can provide a wired connection from the console to that node. If the node connects wirelessly to the main router, the overall path still includes a wireless backhaul; wired backhaul is preferable when practical.
- MoCA: If coaxial TV wiring reaches both locations, a compatible pair of MoCA adapters may use it for networking. Results depend on the coax layout, splitters, filters and adapter compatibility.
- Powerline: This can avoid a long cable run, but performance depends heavily on the home’s wiring and circuit layout.
- Direct Ethernet run: When feasible, a correctly installed cable is the most direct path between the router and console.
Buying examples and price context
Monoprice’s listed Cat6 patch cables specify pure bare copper, UTP, 24 AWG, 550 MHz and snagless RJ45 construction. Its product page showed a 1-foot option at $1.59 when checked on August 16, 2026; price varies by length, color, quantity, shipping, promotions and availability. A 6-foot Cat6A slim cable was listed at $4.79 when checked on August 16, 2026. It may suit someone who wants a slim cable or plans to reuse it with other equipment, but it is not a PS4 ping upgrade. Check the Cat6A slim cable category for current variants and availability.
