If you want one dependable answer, choose a custom Spellsword-style class. It gives you reliable melee damage while leaving room for healing, defensive magic, utility spells or ranged attacks. Among Oblivion’s predefined options, Spellsword is the closest match.
That is a build recommendation, not an objective popularity ranking. Your favourite class should be the one whose skills you expect to use repeatedly. Bethesda’s manual puts the idea plainly: “Your class defines your way of life and which skills are most important to you.”
What is the best all-round class in Oblivion?
A Spellsword-style character covers more situations than a single-purpose build. You can fight with a blade or blunt weapon, cast Restoration to recover, use Destruction at range, summon help with Conjuration, and rely on Alteration or Mysticism for utility and defense.
The strongest version is often a custom class rather than the preset Spellsword. Select the specialization, favored attributes and major skills that match the actions you genuinely plan to use. That keeps your progression aligned with your play style instead of forcing you into skills you rarely touch.

How Oblivion’s class system affects the choice
Oblivion includes 21 predefined classes, seven each under Combat, Magic and Stealth specializations. You can also create a custom class. Specialization makes its associated skills easier to increase; major skills begin higher and advance more readily than miscellaneous skills.
This has an important consequence: putting a skill in your major list is not automatically beneficial. Major skills contribute to leveling, so selecting actions you do not want to use often can make your character level in an inconvenient way. Put frequently used skills at the center of the build, and leave incidental skills outside the major list when appropriate.

How the main class choices compare
| Class or approach | Combat approach | Magic access | Stealth and social play | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custom Spellsword | Reliable weapon damage, with armor and blocking chosen to taste | Healing, utility, defenses, summons or ranged damage | Can add selected stealth or Speechcraft skills without losing the hybrid core | Players who want flexibility and a strong general-purpose character |
| Spellsword | Melee backed by spell use | Broad hybrid access | Secondary rather than defining | Players who want a ready-made hybrid class |
| Mage | Usually secondary to spellcasting | Spell-first play across the Magic skills | Depends on the individual build | Players who want magic to solve most encounters |
| Archer | Bow-based ranged combat | Optional support magic | Stealth naturally complements distance fighting | Players who prefer positioning and ranged attacks |
| Assassin | Opportunistic attacks rather than sustained front-line fighting | Supportive or utility magic can supplement stealth | Strong emphasis on Sneak and related stealth play | Players who enjoy ambushes and a stealth identity |
| Knight | Direct armored melee and defensive fighting | Usually supportive rather than central | Not the primary focus | Players who want a straightforward martial hero |
| Barbarian | Aggressive, direct melee combat | Limited role in the overall concept | Not the primary focus | Players who want to solve problems with weapons |
Why Spellsword suits many players
It handles more encounter types
A pure melee character can be effective but has fewer answers when an enemy is difficult to reach or dangerous to approach. A Spellsword can switch between weapons and spells, use healing after a fight, and add defensive or utility magic when raw damage is not enough.
It supports different role-playing identities
The same mechanical idea can represent a battlemage, temple-trained warrior, enchanted mercenary or wandering scholar who learned to fight. You can emphasize Restoration for a disciplined protector, Destruction for an aggressive battlemage, or Conjuration for a fighter who lets summoned allies share the danger.

- Includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions
It rewards deliberate major-skill choices
The hybrid works best when its major skills reflect your actual routine. If you swing a weapon in nearly every fight, select the relevant weapon skill. If you cast constantly, make the Magic skills you rely on central. Avoid choosing a skill merely because it sounds appropriate if you do not intend to use it regularly.
When another class is a better favourite
Choose Mage for spell-first play
Mage is the natural choice when you want casting, rather than weapon attacks, to define the character. It suits players who enjoy managing different schools of magic and treating combat, defense and utility as spell problems.

Choose Archer or Assassin for ranged stealth
Archer is a good fit for players who want distance, positioning and bow attacks. Assassin better expresses a stealth-centered character whose satisfaction comes from Sneak, careful approaches and decisive ambushes. Both can use magic, but stealth and ranged tactics remain the identity.
Choose Knight or Barbarian for direct melee
Knight fits a defensive, armored warrior who wants an immediately recognizable heroic role. Barbarian is better for aggressive, uncomplicated melee. Choose either when adding a substantial magic toolkit would distract from the way you want to play.

How to build a custom favourite class
- Choose the specialization you will practice most. Combat, Magic or Stealth makes its associated skills easier to increase.
- Pick favored attributes that support your concept. Select the attributes that reinforce the way you expect to fight, cast, survive or sneak.
- Choose major skills you will use constantly. These skills start higher and advance faster, but they also influence leveling, so avoid rarely used choices.
- Leave room for incidental skills. Skills outside the major list can still improve through use without pushing your planned progression as quickly.
- Test the concept in ordinary play. If you repeatedly solve encounters with a skill that is not central, revise the next character around that evidence rather than around the label you originally chose.
What players mean by “favourite class”
Questions such as “What is your favorite pre-made class in Oblivion?” and “What are your favorite classes?” often mix two different answers: a favourite preset and a favourite custom build. Community examples commonly mention Spellsword, Nightblade and custom hybrids because they enjoy combining melee and magic, but those are anecdotes rather than a representative survey.
There is no authoritative popularity statistic establishing one class as Oblivion’s universal favourite. The useful test is personal: which skills do you want to press, swing or cast in most encounters, and do you want a fixed archetype or the freedom to define it yourself?
