To complete The Tomb’s main Easter egg in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, open the Dark Aether Nexus, build and upgrade the Staff of Ice into Ull’s Arrow with Sekhmet’s Vigor, complete four statue trials, then defeat the Sentinel Artifact. The route works solo or in co-op. Directed Mode can keep the run on objective, but it does not replace the hidden staff and trial instructions below.
Before you start
- Solo or co-op: Solo completion is supported. Co-op gives you revives and crowd-control help, but players must coordinate who carries trial energy and who opens portals.
- Directed Mode or Standard Mode: Directed Mode provides objective prompts, raises its objective-based round limit, and repeats round 15 until the quest is finished. Activision describes it as guiding players “from objective to objective while limiting the maximum round number and let you play at a reasonable pace.” Its official Tomb guide is an orientation, not a complete Main Quest walkthrough.
- Recommended preparation: Activision advises entering the Staff of Ice ritual with a main weapon at least Pack-a-Punched once and at least Rare quality. Jugger-Nog and Speed Cola are useful survivability choices. Before the final encounter, a Legendary conventional firearm at Pack-a-Punch tier three, upgraded armor, essential perks, and tactical equipment such as Kazimir devices or Decoys are sensible recommendations, not mandatory gates.
1. Open the Dark Aether Nexus
- Advance through The Tomb until you reach the Subterranean Temple.
- Interact with the altar and sarcophagus to place the amulet. This opens the gateway to the Dark Aether Nexus.
- Use the Nexus portals as shortcuts between the central area and the surface zones. Unlocking the Nexus reduces repeated cross-map travel, which becomes important when carrying trial energy.
The Pack-a-Punch machine is not permanently fixed in the Nexus. Activision says it relocates approximately every five to six rounds. Check the carved stone map behind its previous position to see where it moved instead of searching the map at random.

2. Build and upgrade the Staff of Ice
The quest’s central weapon is the Staff of Ice. Its upgraded form is Ull’s Arrow, and the healing upgrade is Sekhmet’s Vigor.
Collect the components
- Obtain Archibald’s monocle from the Shock Mimic encounter.
- Use the monocle to reveal the constellation symbols required for the staff sequence. The symbols are visual in-game glyphs; follow the order shown by the current puzzle rather than relying on an unverified fixed order from an older guide.
- Complete the Taurus and Orion constellation sequences. If a shot does not register, recheck that you are targeting the revealed symbol and that the sequence has not reset.
- Take the assembled parts to the Staff of Ice altar in the Dark Aether Nexus and build the staff.
Upgrade the staff
- Activate the upgrade sequence involving the three purple crystal lanterns.
- In the Nexus, shoot the rune-bearing rocks revealed by the sequence.
- Enter the portal that closes. On its rune door, match the three symbols you just observed.
- Follow the purple orb back to the altar. Stay close to it; GameSpot warns that straying too far can fail this step.
- Collect the healing upgrade, Sekhmet’s Vigor, completing the Ull’s Arrow upgrade path.
Do not begin the statue trials with an unprepared loadout. The staff is required for the quest, but a separately upgraded firearm is still important for clearing ordinary enemies and surviving the return trips.

3. Complete the four statue trials
Each trial starts in the Nexus and ends at a surface location. Shoot the matching statue crystal with the upgraded staff, collect its energy, enter the corresponding portal, and activate the trial. After completing it, carry the energy back through the portal and deposit it in the original Nexus statue.
The charge is fragile. CODZombie describes the return as allowing no more than two hits, so clear a route first, avoid unnecessary fights, and let teammates protect the carrier. If the carrier is struck too often, expect to repeat the trial.
| Trial | Portal | Surface destination | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vermin | Blue | Dig Site spawn-room statue | Survive the timed Vermin lockdown, then return the energy to the matching Nexus statue. |
| Parasite | Yellow | Shrine of the Hierophants | Prioritize the purple Parasites during the lockdown and deposit the energy orbs they drop before returning. |
| Doppelghast | Green | Ossuary | Survive the Doppelghasts while avoiding the floor hazards, then bring the charge back. |
| Amalgam | Red | Deep Excavation | Freeze and kill the zombies linked to the Amalgam to remove its shield, defeat it, and return the energy. |
Efficient trial routing
- Identify the destination and portal before picking up the charge.
- Keep the carrier near the team; do not split across unrelated objectives.
- Use the Nexus shortcuts rather than taking a long surface route.
- After all four statues are charged, pause to buy armor, replenish ammunition and equipment, and upgrade before triggering the finale.
4. Defeat the Sentinel Artifact
Completing all four trials leads to the Sentinel Artifact confrontation. It is a multi-phase fight: avoid its attacks, survive the adds and arena pressure, and damage it when its vulnerable window opens.

- The Black Ops 6 promotion brings dynamic play moment to moment containing a variety of playing spaces with big buster set pieces and action-packed moments, high stakes wedges and spy activity mantle and dagger.
- In a premium multiplayer experience, players will test their skills over 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand new maps at launch.
- Cross-Gen Bundle of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will also be available on select game pass plans at launch. *
- Use a conventional firearm. CODZombie reports that ordinary bullets damage the Artifact, while the Ray Gun and Staff of Ice do not.
- Keep armor, perks, and tactical equipment for the later portions rather than spending everything during the opening phase.
- In co-op, assign one player to maintain enemy control while others focus fire during vulnerability windows. In solo, prioritize movement and safe damage over greedily extending a firing window.
Published guides disagree on the exact number of Artifact phases, so treat the encounter as a sustained multi-stage battle rather than planning around a fixed phase count. The quest ends when the Sentinel Artifact is defeated.
Common failure points
The Pack-a-Punch machine is missing
It probably relocated. Check the carved stone map in the Nexus; Activision places the move at roughly five- to six-round intervals.
The staff upgrade will not complete
Confirm that you completed the lantern and rune-rock sequence, entered the closing portal, matched all three door symbols, and stayed close to the purple orb on its return path.

The statue charge disappears
The carrier likely took too much damage. Restart that trial and plan a protected portal route; the return constraint is stricter than ordinary traversal.
The final fight feels underpowered
Finish every trial before starting the encounter, then restock. The recommended Legendary, tier-three Pack-a-Punched firearm and upgraded armor are preparation advice, not quest requirements, but entering with only a basic weapon makes the multi-phase fight substantially less forgiving.

Mode and team decisions
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Players who want full control of puzzles and the carrier role. | No teammate to revive or draw enemies away; movement and resource discipline matter more. |
| Co-op | Teams that can protect the carrier and divide combat duties. | Communication is required, and an accidental hit to the carrier can force a repeat. |
| Directed Mode | A paced run with objective prompts and a round-15 ceiling. | It guides objectives but does not spell out every hidden staff, symbol, or trial detail. |
| Standard Mode | Players who want unrestricted round progression and normal sandbox pacing. | You must manage escalating rounds while solving the quest without the Directed objective structure. |
The Bottom Line
Open the Nexus, build and upgrade the Staff of Ice, return all four protected trial charges to their statues, then use a strong conventional firearm to finish the Sentinel Artifact encounter. Directed Mode can control the pace, but the staff and trial mechanics still require this route.
