In the United States, the compact SteamOS gaming PC starts at $1,049 for 512GB of storage; a 2TB version costs $1,349. Valve used a randomized reservation system for the first production run, and fulfillment may continue through the end of 2026 because component supply is limited.
It is best understood as a living-room PC rather than a conventional closed console: it runs Linux-based SteamOS, uses a standard Steam library, and has upgradeable storage and memory.
Steam Machine prices and configurations
These are Valve’s US launch prices. The Steam Controller is an optional $79 addition, and the 2TB machine includes two exclusive faceplates.
| Configuration | Storage | Included extras | US price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine | 512GB | None listed | $1,049 |
| Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | 512GB | Steam Controller | $1,128 |

Which model makes sense?
- Choose 512GB if you mainly play a smaller rotating library and expect to add storage later.
- Choose 2TB if you install large games, want more room immediately, or value the included faceplates. Valve says the SSD can be replaced, so the larger model is primarily a convenience and bundled-accessories choice rather than the only upgrade path.
- Add the controller if you do not already have a gamepad for couch play. The bundle adds the same $79 controller price to either machine.
When did the Steam Machine come out?
Valve announced that first Steam Machine shipments would go out on June 29, 2026. The initial launch coverage included the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Availability is not unlimited. Valve said component shortages reduced the number of systems in the first production run, and the reservation queue could continue to be fulfilled through the rest of 2026.
How the reservation process worked
The launch was handled through a randomized reservation process rather than an unrestricted preorder. The documented process followed these rules:

- Reservation cutoff: Valve randomized reservations after June 25, 2026.
- Account requirement: The buyer needed a Steam account in good standing with at least one purchase made before April 27, 2026.
- Household limit: Valve limited reservations to one per household.
- Purchase invitation: Customers selected for a purchase opportunity reportedly had 72 hours to complete checkout.
- Queue timing: Valve indicated that invitations could continue through the remainder of 2026 as additional machines became available.
The cutoff means the first launch reservation round was not an open, any-time preorder. Valve has not established in the supplied launch information that a new general reservation window is available, so prospective buyers should check their regional Steam storefront rather than assume an invitation can still be requested.
Steam Machine hardware specifications
Ars Technica’s reporting on Valve’s hardware specifications describes a compact system built around AMD components.
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| CPU | Custom six-core AMD Zen 4 processor, up to 4.8GHz |
| Graphics | Integrated AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units |
| Graphics memory | 8GB dedicated VRAM |
| System memory | 16GB DDR5 |
| Storage | 512GB or 2TB configurations |
| Operating system | Linux-based SteamOS |
The machine is designed for a television or monitor in a living-room setup, but its internal components are PC hardware rather than console-specific silicon. Valve has confirmed that both the SSD and system memory are upgradeable.

SteamOS compatibility and verified games
Valve’s GDC 2026 material says every game marked Deck Verified is also Machine Verified. For games receiving the Machine Verified label, Valve’s target is 30 frames per second at 1080p. Valve also describes the Steam Machine as delivering six times the performance of Steam Deck; that figure is Valve’s stated platform comparison, not an independent benchmark.
Because the machine uses SteamOS, game compatibility still depends on the Linux and Proton support behind individual titles. A Verified label is the clearest indication that Valve considers a game suitable for the device, while games without that designation may require configuration changes or may not work as expected.
What performance should you expect at 4K?
Valve’s performance claim is conditional. In a performance FAQ quoted by PC Gamer in February 2026, Valve said, “In our testing the majority of Steam titles play great at 4K 60 fps with FSR on Steam Machine.”
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
That statement describes 4K output using AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling. It is not a promise of native 4K rendering at 60 frames per second for every game. Valve also cautioned that some titles need more aggressive upscaling and may be better played at a lower frame rate with variable refresh rate enabled.
- Most suitable case: A game that scales well with FSR and has a stable performance profile.
- Possible compromise: Lower internal resolution, a reduced frame-rate target, or VRR for demanding games.
- What the claim does not establish: Independent benchmark results or guaranteed native-4K/60 performance across the Steam catalog.
Upgradeability and customization
Valve has confirmed two user-serviceable expansion paths: the SSD and memory can be upgraded. That gives the 512GB model a way to gain capacity later and allows owners to replace storage as game installs grow.
Valve also said, “We plan to share faceplate CAD, specs, and details in the coming months, for customers and manufacturers to make their own.” The launch information does not identify a specific third-party faceplate maker or an affiliate program, so availability and compatibility of future custom panels remain unconfirmed.

Steam Machine versus a traditional console
The important differences are software access, hardware policy and pricing model rather than a simple specification race.
| Question | Steam Machine | Traditional closed console |
|---|---|---|
| Software ecosystem | Steam’s PC library on Linux-based SteamOS, subject to game compatibility | Platform-holder store and operating system with tighter hardware controls |
| Hardware upgrades | Valve says SSD and memory are upgradeable | Usually limited to officially supported storage expansion |
| Game access | Existing Steam purchases can be used when the title is compatible | Access is tied to the console platform and its storefront policies |
| 4K output | Valve targets 4K/60 for most titles with FSR in its testing; demanding games may need compromises | Depends on the individual console, game and graphics mode |
| Business model | Valve is selling the hardware without subsidizing it as a closed ecosystem | Some console makers use hardware subsidies alongside platform sales |
The Steam Machine therefore appeals most to players who already own a substantial Steam library, want PC-style upgrade options, and are comfortable with performance settings. A buyer seeking a fixed, tightly managed platform may find a conventional console simpler.
Why is the Steam Machine more expensive than originally expected?
Valve said component prices and shortages made its original pricing goal “no longer viable.” The company attributed the change to component costs secured over the previous six months and said shortages also reduced the number of units available for the first run.
Valve has also said it will not subsidize the hardware. Its explanation is that subsidized hardware tied to a closed ecosystem conflicts with its view of the Steam Machine as an open PC platform. The result is a launch price that reflects the hardware cost directly instead of relying on future store revenue to offset the machine.
Is the Steam Machine a console or a PC?
It is a PC designed to behave like a console in the living room. The AMD processor and graphics hardware, upgradeable SSD and memory, and SteamOS software place it in the PC category. Its compact enclosure, controller-focused interface and television-oriented use give it the console-like experience Valve is targeting.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to buy one. You are getting access to the Steam ecosystem rather than a separate catalog created solely for this box, and you should evaluate games by their SteamOS compatibility and performance profile instead of assuming every Windows PC title will run identically.
