XFX Radeon HD 7770 Super Overclocked Edition Video Card Review

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The XFX Radeon HD 7770 Super Overclocked Edition (FX-777A-ZDSC) was a competent 2012 mainstream graphics card whose factory overclock delivered a measurable 6%–12% gain over AMD’s reference Radeon HD 7770. Its efficiency, dual-fan cooler and flexible display outputs were attractive, but the $185 U.S. launch MSRP made it poor value against the faster-in-some-games Radeon HD 6850 and GeForce GTX 460. In 2026, it is best understood as a historical or retro-PC part, not a modern gaming recommendation.

What the XFX Super Overclocked Edition was

Hardware Secrets reviewed the card on February 20, 2012 (the page was updated February 24, 2023). It used AMD’s Cape Verde XT GPU and Graphics Core Next architecture. The exact model was FX-777A-ZDSC, with a 1.12 GHz GPU clock and 5.2 GHz effective GDDR5 memory clock.

Specification FX-777A-ZDSC
GPU AMD Radeon HD 7770 (Cape Verde XT, Graphics Core Next)
GPU clock 1.12 GHz
Memory 1 GB GDDR5
Effective memory clock 5.2 GHz
Memory interface and bandwidth 128-bit; 83.2 GB/s
Compute resources 640 shaders
API generation DirectX 11.1
Bus PCI Express 3.0 x16
Power One six-pin PCIe auxiliary connector
Video outputs One DVI-D, one HDMI, two mini DisplayPort
Launch price $185 U.S. MSRP in 2012

The board used a dual-fan cooler with an aluminum heatsink and copper base. It shipped with an HDMI-to-DVI adapter, DVI-to-VGA adapter and CrossFireX bridge, but no games or bundled software. It had no VIVO or video-capture input. XFX advertised support for up to six displays, but that requires suitable DisplayPort hub or daisy-chain equipment in addition to the card’s two mini DisplayPort outputs. See the original specifications and bundle details at Hardware Secrets.

How it fit into XFX’s HD 7770 range

XFX sold four closely related 1 GB HD 7770 cards. The Super Overclocked model cost only $5 more than the listed Black Edition, while adding a slightly higher factory clock and retaining the two-fan cooler.

  • Double Dissipation Cooling with Ghost Thermal Technology for optimal cooling!
  • GPU is clocked at 1000MHz!
  • 1 GB DDR5 Graphics Memory
  • Crossfire Ready
  • Supports up to 3 monitors at the same time.
Edition Part number GPU clock Effective memory Cooler 2012 price
Core FX-777A-ZNF4 1,000 MHz 4.5 GHz One fan $160
Double Dissipation FX-777A-ZDF4 1,000 MHz 4.5 GHz Two fans $170
Black FX-777A-ZDB4 1,095 MHz 4.98 GHz Two fans $180
Super Overclocked FX-777A-ZDSC 1,120 MHz 5.2 GHz Two fans $185

For context, AMD’s reference HD 7770 GHz Edition ran at 1 GHz with 4.5 GHz effective memory, 72 GB/s bandwidth and a $150 historical price. The XFX card therefore raised core frequency by about 12% and memory frequency by about 16%, but game performance increased by less because clocks are only one part of a GPU’s workload.

Architecture and period competition

Cape Verde brought the newer Graphics Core Next design, PCIe 3.0 and DirectX 11.1 support to AMD’s mainstream range. The card’s 128-bit bus and 1 GB frame buffer were typical for its segment, but substantially narrower and smaller than the configurations on the older cards it challenged.

Card Core / shader clock Effective memory Bus Bandwidth Shaders or CUDA cores 2012 price
Radeon HD 6850 775 MHz 4 GHz 256-bit 128 GB/s 960 shaders $140–$170
GeForce GTX 460 1 GB 675 / 1,350 MHz 3.6 GHz 256-bit 115.2 GB/s 336 CUDA cores $140–$150
Radeon HD 7770 reference 1 GHz 4.5 GHz 128-bit 72 GB/s 640 shaders $150

The wider buses on the HD 6850 and GTX 460 helped in bandwidth-heavy games. The XFX card’s newer architecture and higher clocks helped in other workloads, so neither specification sheet nor architecture label predicted every benchmark result.

How Hardware Secrets tested it

The review used an Intel Core i5-2500K at 3.3 GHz, an MSI Z68-GD80 B3 motherboard (BIOS 17.4), 4 GB of DDR3-1866, a 300 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drive, a Samsung SyncMaster 305T 30-inch display and an Antec TruePower New 750 W supply. The operating system was Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, with testing listed at 2560×1600 and 60 Hz.

Drivers were AMD Catalyst 12.1 for the HD 6850, AMD 8.923.2 for the regular HD 7770, AMD 12.2 Pre-Certified for the XFX board, NVIDIA 285.62 and Intel INF 9.2.0.1030. The suite included 3DMark 11 Professional 1.0.3, Aliens vs. Predator Benchmark Tool, Battlefield 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, DiRT3, Far Cry 2 (patch 1.03), Media Espresso 6.5 and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (patch 1.3.5). Hardware Secrets treated differences below 3% as effectively similar. Full methodology is documented at the test-platform page.

These are historical measurements, not results for a current PC. Windows 7, 2012 drivers, an old quad-core platform, period game patches and the test display mean the numbers cannot be transferred directly to 2026 games or operating systems.

Gaming performance: faster than the reference card, not a universal winner

Aliens vs. Predator

At 1920×1200 with high textures, low shadows, and anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering disabled, the XFX card averaged 37.8, versus 33.8 for the standard HD 7770.

Card Average result
Radeon HD 6850 40.3
GeForce GTX 460 1 GB 38.6
XFX HD 7770 Super Overclocked 37.8

Battlefield 3

At 1920×1200 on High settings, with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering disabled, the XFX card led this particular test.

Card Average FPS
XFX HD 7770 Super Overclocked 54.9
GeForce GTX 460 1 GB 53.0
Standard HD 7770 51.8
Radeon HD 6850 50.8
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 43.6

The XFX board was 6.0% ahead of the reference HD 7770, 8.1% ahead of the HD 6850 and 3.6% ahead of the GTX 460 in this test. The small margin over the GTX 460 should not be treated as a decisive generational advantage. See the Battlefield 3 results.

What the gaming pattern means

Across the review’s game suite, Hardware Secrets summarized the factory-overclocked card as roughly 6%–12% faster than a standard HD 7770. Results against the HD 6850 and GTX 460 varied with engine, settings and driver. The honest conclusion is a meaningful uplift over the reference model, not consistent dominance over older GPUs with wider memory buses.

GPU-accelerated video conversion

Media Espresso 6.5 converted a 449 MB, 1920×1080i MPEG-2 file to a smaller 640×360 H.264/MP4 file. The XFX card completed the task in 39 seconds; the standard HD 7770 took 41 seconds, the GTX 460 46 seconds, the HD 6850 52 seconds and the Core i5-2500K 67 seconds.

Hardware Secrets calculated the XFX card as 4.9% faster than the reference HD 7770, 15.2% faster than the GTX 460, 25.0% faster than the HD 6850 and 41.8% faster than the CPU in the displayed comparison. Its conclusion page used different baselines or rounding, so the raw times are the safer way to report the result. This demonstrates performance in one period application and conversion workload, not a general claim about modern encoding software. See the Media Espresso test.

Cooling, displays, power and overclocking

  • Cooling: The exact board used a dual-fan aluminum heatsink with a copper base, a more substantial design than XFX’s single-fan Core Edition.
  • Displays: DVI-D, HDMI and two mini DisplayPort outputs were useful for period multi-monitor setups. Six-screen operation required compatible hub or daisy-chain hardware.
  • Power: One six-pin PCIe connector was required. Hardware Secrets did not publish a complete exact-model power, temperature or acoustic measurement set in the cited pages.
  • CrossFireX: A bridge was included for compatible multi-GPU configurations.

A separate review of the related XFX Radeon R7770 Black Super Overclocked Edition reported low temperatures, quiet operation and low card power in its own test system. Those observations belong to that sibling model, not a verified measurement of FX-777A-ZDSC. The same related coverage found that raising the power limit by 20% still did not make a stable 1,150 MHz core possible on its sample; treat that as a warning that factory-overclocked Cape Verde cards may have limited extra headroom, not as a guarantee for every board. See the related-model report.

Value in 2012

The $185 U.S. MSRP was the decisive problem. The standard HD 7770 was listed at $150, while the HD 6850 cost $140–$170 and the GTX 460 1 GB $140–$150. Paying a small premium over the reference HD 7770 bought a real but modest performance increase, yet older cards often delivered equal or better gaming performance for less money.

Hardware Secrets therefore judged the product itself competent but concluded that the HD 6850 and GTX 460 offered better cost/performance for the average buyer. The Super Overclocked model made more sense when lower power, newer platform features, the dual-fan design or multi-monitor connectivity mattered more than maximum frames per dollar.

Then versus now: using the card in 2026

This review answers whether the board was attractive in early 2012. It does not establish a current used price, current driver support, current game compatibility or modern frame rates. The 1 GB VRAM capacity and 128-bit interface are especially restrictive for newer software, and the old driver and DirectX-era test environment cannot stand in for contemporary testing.

For a retro-PC builder, the card can be appropriate for period-accurate Windows 7-era hardware, provided the system has a six-pin PCIe lead, adequate case clearance and room for a dual-slot cooler. Its output mix may also appeal to a collector assembling a multi-display period setup. A 2026 used-card buyer should inspect the specific sample rather than relying on the old review.

Used-card inspection checklist

  • Confirm the label or PCB identifies FX-777A-ZDSC, not the slower Black, Double Dissipation or Core Edition.
  • Check fan bearings, fan-start behavior, dust and dried thermal compound.
  • Inspect the mini DisplayPort connectors for corrosion or damage and test every output.
  • Verify that a six-pin PCIe cable and suitable display adapters are available.
  • Look for BIOS modifications, visual artifacts and crashes under sustained load.
  • Do not infer a current market value from the 2012 MSRP.

Final recommendation by buyer type

  • Original 2012 buyer: A sound, efficient mainstream card, but overpriced beside the HD 6850 and GTX 460 unless its newer features or cooler mattered.
  • Retro-PC builder: Worth considering when an authentic 2012-era HD 7770 and its multi-output layout are desired.
  • 2026 used-card buyer: Buy only for a specific low-demand or restoration use after inspecting the individual board; do not use these benchmarks as current gaming evidence.
  • Collector or display enthusiast: The exact model, factory-overclocked branding and mini DisplayPort outputs give it historical interest, while the six-display capability depends on additional equipment.

The XFX Radeon HD 7770 Super Overclocked Edition was faster than the reference HD 7770 and technically well equipped for its class. Its launch price, not its engineering, kept it from being the period value leader.
