This teardown examines the Delta EADP-260AP power supply fitted to an early U.S. 80 GB PlayStation 3. Hardware Secrets published the “The Power Supply” section on October 9, 2008 as part 4 of its 10-part Anatomy of the PlayStation 3 series; the page also shows a February 24, 2023 update or republication date. The “of 10” wording is pagination, not part of the hardware’s name.
Because Sony used different components across PS3 revisions, these specifications describe the photographed console—not every PlayStation 3. See the original teardown’s scope warning at Hardware Secrets.
The examined power supply at a glance
| Item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Delta |
| Model | EADP-260AP |
| Console examined | Early 80 GB PlayStation 3 sold in the United States |
| Cooling | No dedicated fan inside the PSU |
| Main output | +12 V, up to 21.5 A |
| Secondary output | +5 V, up to 0.6 A |
| Capacitor brands observed | Chemi-Con, Rubycon and Nichicon |
The model’s “260” designation corresponds broadly to its approximately 260-watt output class. The source is a photographic teardown, not a complete schematic or laboratory characterization.
What the 261 W figure actually means
The stated rail ratings produce this theoretical maximum:

- Compatible with: Sony Playstation 3 First Generation (power connector is 3-slot)
- Power Cord Type: 18 AWG, 125V 10A; Length: 4 Feet
- Universally Compatible: Works with most PCs, TVs, Monitors and Other Devices that Accommodate a 3-pin Power Connector. ▶NOTE: Please check pictures to confirm compatibility before purchasing
- Safety / UL Listed: Tested, Approved and Certified by UL
- +12 V: 12 × 21.5 A = 258 W
- +5 V: 5 × 0.6 A = 3 W
- Combined nominal maximum: approximately 261 W
That is available DC output capacity at the listed maximum ratings. It is not the PS3’s normal gameplay draw, idle draw, wall-outlet consumption, heat output or efficiency. Those would require separate measurements. The teardown’s calculation is documented at Hardware Secrets.
How the PSU connects to the console
High-current 12 V connection
The +12 V output leaves the bottom of the supply through a two-pin female plug. This is the high-current supply path for the console’s main power system.
5 V and standby/control connection
A side connector provides the +5 V output and a connection associated with the front-panel power control. In functional terms, this is a standby and control interface rather than a simple mains switch: low-power circuitry can remain active while the console appears off, and the button signals the console’s control electronics.

Fanless does not mean cool or that the PS3 is fanless
The examined PSU contains no dedicated fan and therefore relies on conduction through its construction and passive airflow around it. That can remove a PSU fan as a noise and failure source, but the supply still generates heat and depends on clear vents, correct mounting and adequate chassis airflow.
The PS3 as a whole is not fanless: its system cooling hardware includes a console fan. The teardown provides no temperature measurements, acoustic tests or thermal-margin data, so fanless operation alone does not prove superior reliability.

What the capacitor brands tell us—and what they do not
Hardware Secrets identifies Japanese-made capacitors from Chemi-Con, Rubycon and Nichicon in the photographed supply. These are useful construction details and reputable manufacturers, but brand origin is not a lifetime guarantee.
Actual capacitor reliability depends on temperature, electrical stress, operating hours, age and manufacturing variation. The page does not report capacitor series, capacitance or voltage values, ripple-current specifications, endurance testing or failure statistics. A supply can also fail through switching semiconductors, protection components, fuses, solder joints, connectors or regulation faults.
Where the PSU fits in PS3 architecture
The external +12 V and +5 V outputs are not the operating voltages of the Cell Broadband Engine, RSX graphics processor or memory chips. The motherboard converts and distributes power locally through voltage-regulation circuitry.

The broader teardown identifies a Cell processor, RSX GPU, 256 MB of XDR main memory and 256 MB of GDDR3 graphics memory; those components require lower, locally regulated rails. The motherboard discussion mentions an On Semiconductor NCP5399, but the available material does not establish its exact function well enough to assign it a definitive role. See the companion hardware section.

Early fat models, later 40 GB and 80 GB revisions, backward-compatible systems, Slim consoles and Super Slim consoles can differ in power supplies, connectors, board layouts and thermal design. Do not select a replacement solely because it fits the chassis.
Before servicing or ordering a unit, record:
- the console’s CECH model number;
- storage capacity and chassis type;
- sales region;
- the exact PSU label, model and ratings;
- connector shape and pin arrangement.
The EADP-260AP specification is therefore a model-specific reference, not a universal PS3 replacement rule.

Reliability, diagnosis and replacement cautions
General aging risks
Possible PSU problems include aged or high-ESR electrolytic capacitors, failed switching devices, blown fuses, protection-circuit faults, cracked solder joints and damaged connectors. These are general failure possibilities, not faults documented in the photographed console.
Do not confuse PSU failure with console failure
A PS3 that will not start can also have a motherboard fault, power-control-board problem, shorted peripheral or damaged harness. The teardown does not provide a diagnostic decision tree or component-level repair procedure.
Mains-voltage safety
The PSU is connected to hazardous mains voltage, and large capacitors may retain a dangerous charge after unplugging. Opening or probing it requires appropriate electrical training, isolation procedures, verified discharge and insulated equipment. Do not turn teardown photographs into instructions for live-voltage testing.
A replacement must match the console revision, output voltages, current capability, connectors and mechanical fit. A unit that merely fits physically can damage the console.
