If you only trigger it by accident, changing its shortcut is another option—but that leaves the overlay enabled. Disabling it can affect Steam screenshots, invitations, and some controller or game-specific features, so test the functions you use.
What Steam Overlay does
Steam Overlay is the in-game interface normally opened with Shift + Tab. It gives you access to features such as friends and chat, invitations, the Steam browser, and screenshots. A game may also rely on overlay functionality in the background for Steam-connected features, even when you never open the interface yourself. Valve’s overlay support page explains its controls and functions; Steamworks documentation describes how developers integrate it.

Choose the right setting

Valve documents both global and per-game controls. The global checkbox is under Steam > Settings > In Game; the title-specific checkbox is under that game’s Properties > General. The labels and paths are documented here.
Disable Steam Overlay for every game
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open the Steam menu in the top-left corner and choose Settings. On macOS, the menu may say Preferences.
- Select In Game.
- Turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Close Settings. If a game that was already running still shows the overlay, exit the game and Steam completely, then relaunch both.
Menu wording can vary slightly by operating system, language, or client interface revision. The setting to look for is the global in-game overlay control. The Steamworks guide for Corona also describes the global control.

Disable it for one game
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game, or open its gear or menu button, and choose Properties.
- In General, turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Close Properties, then exit and relaunch the game.
This is usually the more targeted choice when only one game is troublesome. For example, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 black-screen troubleshooting page includes disabling the overlay as a game-specific step; that does not establish that the overlay is the cause of every crash or black screen.
Change the shortcut instead of disabling the overlay
If the problem is accidental activation, open Steam > Settings > In Game and change the overlay shortcut from Shift + Tab to a combination that is less likely to collide with your game’s controls. The shortcut setting changes how you call up the overlay; it does not disable overlay injection or address a compatibility issue caused by the overlay itself. What disabling Steam Overlay can affect
Consequences depend on the game and how it uses Steamworks. Treat these as features to test, not as a guarantee that every item will stop working in every title.

| Purchases and inventory | Some games’ in-game purchases, inventory, trading, or marketplace workflows may rely on overlay functions. |
| Controller configurations | Some Steam Controller or Steam Input workflows may behave differently. Test your particular game and controller rather than assuming either feature is wholly independent. |
| Steam browser | You will not be able to open the Steam browser through the in-game overlay while it is disabled. |

If the overlay still appears
- Check the global Steam > Settings > In Game checkbox and, for the affected title, Library > game > Properties > General. A global setting and a game-specific setting are separate controls.
- Close the game. Exit Steam completely from the Steam menu, reopen the client, and launch the game from your Library.
- Identify which overlay is appearing. Disable Discord, NVIDIA or AMD software, Xbox Game Bar, or the external launcher’s overlay separately if that is the interface you see.
- Temporarily close third-party utilities that may conflict, then test again. If appropriate, restart the computer.
- If the game is behaving incorrectly, verify its installed files through Steam’s game Properties. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting Steam and checking local game files. Valve’s file-verification guidance
Turning off the overlay is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed FPS boost or cure for crashes. Steamworks notes that an overlay-related crash can expose a rendering or memory problem without proving the overlay itself is the root cause. Steamworks overlay documentation
External launchers and non-Steam games
Steam’s overlay control affects Steam Overlay only. A game launched through Ubisoft Connect, EA App, Rockstar Games Launcher, or another service may show that launcher’s own interface instead; turn that overlay off in its own settings and restart the relevant launcher and game. Adding a non-Steam game to your Library does not guarantee the same overlay behavior as a game distributed through Steam. If you use a shortcut, Steam may have limited or inconsistent ability to apply its overlay or per-game control. Valve’s Steam Controller and game issue guidance

Test controller behavior
Steam Input and Steam Overlay are related but separate Steam features. Valve’s controller troubleshooting says the overlay can be vital to Steam Controller functionality, while also noting that third-party software can affect controller behavior. If a controller profile stops working as expected after you turn off the overlay, re-enable it for that game and investigate controller settings or software conflicts separately. Platform interface differences
Steam Deck and Linux use Steam interfaces that do not always present the same desktop menus. Look for the equivalent in-game overlay control and the affected game’s Properties entry, but do not assume the desktop path is exposed identically in Gaming Mode. Valve’s Steam Deck support page confirms the platform but does not provide a complete current overlay-disable path. Steam Deck technical support
If disabling it causes a new problem
Restore the overlay for the affected game and test the feature that stopped working—such as a Steam screenshot, invitation, or controller configuration. If restoring it fixes the issue, that game may rely on overlay-backed functionality. If not, examine other overlays, the game’s files, controller software, drivers, or its launcher. Prefer Steam’s supported settings over editing local configuration files; file edits are not the normal consumer procedure for disabling the overlay.
For a quick post-change check, launch the game and test the shortcut, screenshot key if you use it, controller configuration, invitations, and any Steam-connected feature the game provides. Reverse the per-game checkbox if the change causes a problem.
