Start with the five-minute isolation test below before replacing a headset.
Try these five fixes first
- Leave any PlayStation or Xbox party and Discord voice channel, then restart the game and join its native voice channel.
- Open the game’s communication settings. Turn voice chat on, select the correct team, party, lobby or proximity channel, and raise incoming-voice volume.
- Check every mute: the game, the individual player, the console quick menu, Discord, the controller and the headset itself.
- Confirm that chat is routed to the headset or speakers you are actually using. Reset a headset’s CHAT/GAME balance to the middle.
- Test console speakers, a second headset, another game or a built-in party chat. The result tells you whether the fault follows the game, platform or hardware.
Identify exactly what is failing

Check the game and voice channel
“Game chat” may mean team, party, lobby, match, proximity or push-to-talk chat. A title can also switch automatically to party-only communication. In the game’s audio or communication menu, verify that voice chat is enabled, the intended channel is selected, incoming voice volume is above zero, the output device is correct, and no relevant players are muted. Menu names change between games and patches, so use the control that corresponds to these functions rather than relying on one universal label.
Remove party and Discord conflicts
External channels can capture the same headset path that native game chat needs. Leave the console party or Discord call, restart the game, join the game’s channel directly and test with a teammate. If voices return, the headset was not necessarily defective; the channels were competing or the platform was prioritising one.
On PS5, press PS, open Sound in the Control Center and make sure Mute Game Voice Chat is off. This control mutes game-chat audio specifically: PlayStation’s party-chat guide.

Discord integration is separate from native game chat. PS5 requires supported system software and linked accounts, while Xbox exposes a connected Discord call under Parties & Chats; participant mute and volume controls still apply. See Discord’s PlayStation FAQ and Xbox FAQ.
PlayStation 5 checks
Raise an individual player
- Press PS and open the voice-chat card.
- Select the player.
- Choose Volume and raise it if that player was turned down.
PS5 supports per-player voice volume, so a single silent teammate usually does not indicate a network or headset failure. The control is documented in the PS5 voice-chat guide.
Verify the output and headset mixer
Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output to Headphones and select the intended headset. Sony’s PULSE 3D headset also has separate CHAT/GAME buttons; a balance pushed fully toward Game can make voices inaudible. Its manual describes both controls: PULSE 3D instructions.
Check account controls
Family-manager settings, privacy controls, blocked players and a communication suspension can prevent party or social voice features. Review the account’s communication permissions and suspension status using PlayStation suspensions and the Players’ safety guide. Labels and availability vary by region, firmware and account type.

Xbox checks
- Open the current audio or party controls and raise headset volume and the chat mixer; exact labels vary by Xbox system version.
- Confirm the headset and controller are not physically muted, then leave Xbox party chat while testing the game’s channel.
- Review privacy and online-safety permissions for voice and text communication, including cross-network communication when cross-platform chat is required.
- Test the headset in an Xbox party. Success there proves the basic Xbox audio path, not that every game’s separate voice service works.
Discord calls connected to Xbox appear under Parties & Chats, where participants and audio controls can be changed. Cross-network permissions can also affect cross-platform activity: Discord’s Xbox connection FAQ.
Windows PC checks
Fix per-application output
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Find the game and voice application.
- Unmute it, raise its volume and select the intended headset or speakers as its output.
Windows can send one application to a different device even when system sounds work. Microsoft lists app-specific volume, output selection, audio services and drivers as causes in its app-audio troubleshooting guidance.
Check microphone permissions and in-game devices
For outgoing chat, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Enable Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone and, where applicable, Let desktop apps access your microphone. Microsoft documents these controls at microphone permissions.
In the game, select the actual microphone and headset rather than Default device while testing. Try both open-mic and push-to-talk; verify the key is bound and not intercepted by another program. Discord has its own input, output, mute and Voice & Video controls; use its voice troubleshooting guide.

Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat
These instructions apply to Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat, not the original Switch. If other system audio works but voices do not, press C, select the user, choose Options and raise that user’s voice-volume slider. Ask participants to check that they have not muted themselves; then have everyone leave the room, restart, create a new room and check Nintendo service status.
Nintendo recommends testing speakers by removing the console from its dock or disconnecting headphones, moving the console about 10–15 feet from the wireless router, power-cycling network equipment when connection symptoms exist, and testing again: Nintendo’s GameChat audio guidance.
For microphone input, use System Settings > Audio > Audio Input, choose the microphone, adjust input volume, test with noise suppression changed, and select Test Microphone. Nintendo states that Bluetooth headset microphone input is not supported for Switch 2 GameChat, although Bluetooth listening may work: Nintendo’s microphone guidance.

- Press the headset mute button, flip-to-mute boom, inline switch and controller mute button. Check console and Discord mute states too.
- For wired headsets, reseat the plug, try another controller or USB port, remove splitters and confirm the adapter carries microphone input as well as stereo audio.
- For wireless models, charge, reconnect or re-pair, check the dongle and update firmware only through the manufacturer’s official application.
- Try, in order, TV or monitor speakers, a wired headset, a USB headset, the wireless headset and a second known-working headset.
If speakers work but the headset does not, suspect routing, compatibility, the adapter or the chat mixer. If every output fails, investigate the game, platform, account, network or service. If another headset works on the same console or PC, the original device or connection is the likely fault.

Network, service and cross-play causes
Check the platform’s service page and the game publisher’s status page, restart the game and then the console or PC. Restart the router only when other network symptoms are present. Cross-play does not guarantee cross-platform voice chat; the game’s voice service and permissions determine whether it is supported.
Do not begin with port forwarding, DMZ mode or a router reset. Those changes can create security and configuration problems and are poor first-line responses to a muted channel or wrong output device. Nintendo’s documented network sequence is available in its GameChat troubleshooting page.
When only one game fails
If party chat and other games work, the platform audio path is probably functional. Check the affected title’s voice channel, individual mute list, recent patch notes, cross-play rules and publisher service status. A game can use a separate voice provider or restrict proximity and team chat in specific modes, so buying a headset will not correct a title-specific failure.
