To check for an Xbox One game update now, open Xbox button → My games & apps → Manage → Updates, then select the game and start its download. For hands-off updating, turn on Keep my games & apps up to date, use Instant-on (or the equivalent standby mode), and leave the console connected to the internet with enough free storage.
Xbox dashboard wording can differ slightly by software revision and region. Game updates, Xbox system updates, first-time installations, and additional in-game downloads are separate processes.
Update an Xbox One game manually
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open My games & apps. Choose See all if that option appears.
- Select Manage, then Updates.
- Choose the game with an available update and start or resume the download.
- Open Queue to watch the transfer and installation.
Some dashboard versions offer Update all. If yours does not, start each listed update individually or leave the console connected so automatic updating can handle them.
If the game is not listed
- Check My games & apps → Manage → Queue; the update may already be downloading.
- Highlight the game, press the Menu button, and choose Manage game and add-ons to inspect installed content.
- Launch the game once. Some titles discover a required patch only when they contact Xbox or the publisher’s service.
- Restart the console and check Updates again.
The Updates screen is not always a real-time list of every publisher-side change. A patch may be delayed, already installed, temporarily withdrawn, or delivered as a separate downloadable or in-game package.

Turn on automatic game updates
- Press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system → Settings.
- Open System → Updates & downloads.
- Enable Keep my games & apps up to date.
- Go to General → Power options and select Instant-on, or the equivalent standby option shown on your console.
- Return to Updates & downloads and enable Keep my console up to date.
Microsoft documents the relationship between Instant-on, an internet connection, and automatic console updates in its Xbox One system-update instructions. Instant-on makes background activity possible, but it does not guarantee an immediate download. The console checks periodically and still depends on connectivity, storage, Xbox services, and (for some games) the publisher’s services.
Automatic-update requirements and trade-offs
- The Xbox must be online and recognize the installed game.
- There must be enough free storage for downloading, unpacking, and replacing files; a small advertised patch can require substantially more temporary working space.
- The console must not be fully shut down in a mode that prevents background activity.
- Instant-on is more convenient but generally uses more standby electricity than a full power-saving shutdown.
- Automatic updates reduce maintenance, while manual checks give you more control over when large downloads use bandwidth.
Check whether an update is downloading
Go to My games & apps → Manage → Queue. Common statuses include:
- Queued: waiting for another download, network availability, or queue priority.
- Downloading: data is being transferred.
- Installing: the downloaded package is being applied.
- Paused: manually paused, interrupted, or blocked by another condition.
- Ready to start: the title may open before all content is installed; multiplayer or later areas can remain unavailable.
- Update required: the game cannot proceed online until the update completes.
Starting another game, app, or download can change queue priority and reduce the update’s speed. Xbox’s download controls explain how to pause or stop competing transfers.
Update the Xbox One console itself
A console update changes Xbox operating-system or firmware software; it is not the same as patching an individual game.

- Connect the Xbox One to the internet.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Select Profile & system → Settings.
- Choose System → Updates & downloads → Update console.
If Update console is unavailable or reports that no update is available, the console is current. Use this path when the problem concerns system software, not when you simply need a game patch.
Fix a stuck or missing game update
- Inspect the queue: open My games & apps → Manage → Queue and identify whether the update is queued, paused, or blocked.
- Pause other downloads: resume the game update after competing transfers stop.
- Quit the running game or app: an active title can limit download performance or hold files open.
- Restart the Xbox normally: use the power menu, then check the queue after it boots.
- Check storage: uninstall unused games or apps, move titles to a compatible external USB drive, and remove unneeded clips and screenshots. Do not casually delete saved-game data; uninstalling a game and deleting saves are different actions, and cloud synchronization matters.
- Check the network: if other devices also have trouble, restart the router and confirm that Xbox services are available.
- Cancel and retry: this can clear a damaged queue entry, but canceling normally means downloading the update again.
- Reinstall only last: reinstalling can repair damaged installation data but may require the entire game and its updates to download again.
Do not begin with a factory reset. If the game is on an external drive, make sure that drive is connected and functioning; a disconnected or failing drive can make both the title and its update appear missing.
Why an update may appear late
- The console has not checked since the publisher released the patch.
- The update is already in the queue or the game is already current.
- Xbox or publisher services are experiencing an outage.
- The publisher is staging, replacing, or temporarily withdrawing the patch.
- The game needs a title update plus separate downloadable or in-game content.
Updating disc-based games
Inserting a disc does not guarantee that the disc contains the newest build. The Xbox installs game data to its storage, while the disc generally supplies the license or installation source. Most current patches are distributed over the internet, and the disc may need to remain inserted whenever you play.
For supported backward-compatible titles, Microsoft explains that digital games appear in Ready to Install, while inserting a compatible disc starts the download; the disc remains required for play. See Microsoft’s backward-compatibility guidance.

If a disc installation stops at zero or repeatedly fails, eject and reinsert it, inspect it for damage, verify free storage, and follow Xbox installation troubleshooting. An ordinary disc game generally cannot receive its normal patch without internet access.
Can Xbox One games be updated offline?
Normal game patches require an internet connection. Microsoft provides specialized Offline System Update procedures for Xbox console recovery, but that process is for system software, not a routine way to patch games. Avoid unofficial third-party game-update files; resolve the network or service problem instead.

Supported Xbox experiences can remotely start installation of games and apps. The console must be configured for remote features, connected to power and network standby, and using an Xbox app version and region that support the function. Remote installation is useful for beginning a download while away, but it is not a guaranteed method for forcing an update to a title already installed on the Xbox One. Automatic updating depends on internet access, enabled game updates, standby power settings, free storage, queue availability, and Xbox or publisher services. Check the Queue first, then verify those conditions.

Can I update an Xbox One game without internet?
Ordinary game patches are delivered online. Offline System Update procedures apply to console recovery, not normal game updates.
Does Instant-on guarantee that games update while the Xbox is off?
No. Instant-on enables background activity, but periodic checks, storage, connectivity, queue state, and service availability still determine whether a patch downloads.
Why is my game update stuck at 0 percent?
Pause competing downloads, quit running games, restart the console, check storage and the network, then cancel and retry the update if necessary. Reinstall only if those steps fail.
Does deleting a game delete my saved data?
Uninstalling the game and deleting saved data are separate choices. Preserve local saves and allow cloud synchronization before removing data.
