Sometimes. A PS4 headset with a standard four-pole 3.5 mm CTIA plug usually works through an Xbox controller for game audio and party chat. PlayStation-only USB headsets, wireless dongles and Bluetooth models generally do not work directly or lose important features. Identify the connection method and exact model before buying an adapter or replacement.
The quick compatibility guide
| PS4 headset type | Xbox result | Usually available |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm CTIA wired headset | Usually compatible through the controller | Game audio and microphone |
| 3.5 mm headset with a separate USB plug | Sometimes; use analog audio if provided | Audio and chat may work; USB lighting, EQ or controls may not |
| USB-only wired headset | Usually incompatible unless specifically Xbox-compatible | Not normally recognized as USB audio |
| PlayStation wireless headset with USB transmitter | Usually incompatible | Dongle may be PlayStation-specific |
| Xbox Wireless or Xbox-mode wireless headset | Compatible when the exact model lists Xbox | Game audio, chat and often mixing |
| Bluetooth-only headset | No reliable direct console connection | Bluetooth may work with phones or PCs instead |
| Optical/base-station system | Model and console dependent | Game audio may work; chat needs a separate supported path |

What “PS4 headset” can mean
The label describes a market position, not a universal connector or protocol. A headset may plug into a DualShock 4 with 3.5 mm, connect to PS4 by USB, use a PlayStation-only wireless transmitter, rely on optical audio and a base station, or be one edition of a multi-platform family. Sony’s PS4 documentation covers controller-jack and supported USB headsets, but PS4 support does not imply Xbox support: Sony’s PS4 FAQ.

- A four-contact 3.5 mm TRRS plug and CTIA wiring.
- A USB cable or transmitter required for audio, rather than only power, charging or lighting.
- An Xbox/USB switch on the transmitter.
- “Xbox,” “Designed for Xbox,” or “Xbox Wireless” in the manufacturer’s compatibility list.
- A platform suffix such as X or Xbox. Suffixes differ by manufacturer, so verify the listing rather than relying on the letter alone.
Using a wired 3.5 mm PS4 headset
This is the highest-probability case. A CTIA TRRS plug carries stereo output and microphone input in one connector. Incorrect wiring can produce sound without a microphone, one-channel audio or buzzing.
- Turn on the Xbox and controller.
- Insert the plug fully into the controller’s headset jack.
- Press the Xbox button and open the guide’s audio or speaker controls.
- Raise headset volume, put the headset chat mixer in the middle for testing and set mic monitoring as desired.
- Join an Xbox party and test incoming and outgoing voice.
Current Xbox Series controllers generally include a 3.5 mm jack. Some older Xbox One controllers do not. In that case, the official Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter connects to the controller expansion port and supplies headset audio, microphone support, volume and chat-mix controls: Microsoft’s adapter documentation. Confirm the physical controller revision before purchasing.
Will the microphone and party chat work?
Audio compatibility and chat compatibility are separate. A wired headset’s microphone normally works when the plug is CTIA-compatible, fully seated, unmuted and connected to a current controller or adapter. Xbox privacy settings must allow voice communication, and controller firmware should be current.

Optical audio, USB power or a chat-only cable can produce a different result: game sound may work while the microphone does not, or the microphone may work while game audio is absent.

Ordinary USB audio headsets are generally plug-and-play on PS4 or PC but not on Xbox. SteelSeries documents this limitation for certain Arctis configurations: Arctis Pro Wireless Xbox setup. USB is not automatically incompatible, however: an explicitly Xbox-designed headset or transmitter can use Xbox-specific firmware or protocol. A USB lead may also provide only power, updates or RGB lighting.
If the headset has an analog input, a 3.5 mm cable to the controller may restore stereo audio and microphone use, but USB-dependent EQ, software, RGB and other controls can disappear. SteelSeries gives this limitation for the Nova 3: Nova 3 Xbox support.

Wireless PS4 headsets
Wireless systems may use a PlayStation USB transmitter, Xbox Wireless, a proprietary 2.4 GHz link, Bluetooth, optical plus USB or several connections together. Transmitters that look identical are not necessarily interchangeable. SteelSeries says the PlayStation-focused Arctis 9 and Xbox Wireless Arctis 9X are different, non-interchangeable models: model comparison.
For a wireless connection, the exact product page should explicitly list Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Wireless, or an Xbox mode. For example, the Nova 3X Wireless requires its dongle to be switched to Xbox mode before connection: SteelSeries setup guide.
Wireless setup checklist
- Verify the exact model and Xbox compatibility.
- Set the transmitter to Xbox mode if it has a switch.
- Connect it as the manual specifies and power on the headset.
- Wait for the pairing indicator or tone.
- Test both game and party audio.
Bluetooth is not a universal workaround
Bluetooth pairing with a phone or PC does not prove direct Xbox-console support. Generic Bluetooth headsets may not appear in Xbox pairing, can introduce latency and often have inconsistent microphone behavior. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Headset uses Xbox Wireless for Xbox One and Series consoles while reserving Bluetooth for PC and mobile devices: official specifications. A phone running the Xbox app is a different, indirect chat solution—not equivalent console audio.

Optical audio and base stations
Some PS4 systems send game audio over TOSLINK optical, use USB for power or data and require a controller cable for chat. A compatible Xbox One console and base station may accept optical game audio; SteelSeries documents an Xbox One optical arrangement for the Arctis Pro Wireless: Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.
