You can charge a PS5 DualSense controller from a wall outlet by connecting it with a USB-C cable to a compatible USB wall adapter. Do not plug the controller directly into the outlet: it needs USB power, not household AC mains.
What you need
- A DualSense or DualSense Edge controller.
- A USB-C cable that supports charging and data. Sony recommends a “charge and sync” or “charging and data” cable for troubleshooting; a charge-only cable cannot be used for that process.
- A USB wall adapter that complies with USB standards. Sony cautions that some USB chargers will not charge the controller.
The DualSense manual lists a 5 V, 1,500 mA input rating and a built-in lithium-ion battery rated at 3.65 V and 1,560 mAh. These are the controller’s published specifications, not a guarantee that every adapter with a particular wattage will work. Sony’s DualSense instruction manual
How to charge a PS5 controller from a wall outlet
- Find the USB-C port on the top edge of the controller.
- Connect the USB-C end of a known-good charging and data cable to the controller.
- Connect the other end to a USB wall adapter.
- Plug the adapter into the wall outlet.
- Check the light bar: it should slowly blink orange while the controller charges. The light turns off when charging is complete.
Sony describes USB-standard-compliant chargers as an option, but notes that not every USB charger is compatible. The controller does not need to be plugged into the PS5 to receive power. Will a phone charger work?
It may. A reputable USB phone charger can charge a DualSense if it establishes a compatible USB charging connection, but Sony does not promise that every phone charger, USB-C adapter, fast charger, power bank, or multi-port charger will work. A high advertised wattage is not proof that it is compatible or that it will charge the controller faster; the controller’s charging circuitry draws power from the adapter.

If a phone charger does not work, try the cable that came with the PS5 and another USB adapter. Avoid damaged or loose equipment, and do not infer compatibility from the charger’s wattage alone. Sony’s charger and cable guidance
How to tell whether it is charging
From a wall adapter
Look for a slowly blinking orange light bar. It turns off when the controller is fully charged. The PS5’s on-screen battery display is not available while the controller is connected only to a wall adapter.

From a connected PS5
Press the PS button, open Control Center, and select Accessories. While charging, the battery icon animates and shows a lightning bolt; when full, it stops animating and shows three bars. Sony’s DualSense support guide · DualSense instruction manual
How long does charging take?
Sony’s DualSense Charging Station manual gives an approximate full-charge time of three hours for a controller with no remaining battery. That is a reference for the official station, not a guaranteed time for every wall adapter and cable. Use the PS5 in Rest Mode instead
If you do not have a suitable wall adapter, the PS5 can supply USB power in Rest Mode once its USB power setting is configured.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System, then Power Saving.
- Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Under Supply Power to USB Ports, choose Always or 3 Hours.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB-C cable and put the console in Rest Mode.
On PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 model group, the setting also includes Adaptive, which adjusts charging behavior based on the connected controller’s remaining battery level. That option is not documented for every PS5 model. Sony’s Rest Mode charging instructions

Why a wall charger may not charge the controller
Try these checks in order, changing one part of the setup at a time so you can identify the problem:
- Reconnect the cable. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends.
- Swap the cable. Try the PS5’s original cable or another known-good cable that supports charging and data. A charge-only cable is not suitable for Sony’s troubleshooting process.
- Swap the adapter. Test with a different USB wall adapter. Some USB chargers do not charge the DualSense.
- Try another outlet. This rules out a problem with the wall outlet or its power source.
- Inspect the USB-C port. Check for debris, moisture, looseness, or visible damage. Do not force a connector into the port.
- Test the controller from the PS5. Connect it to a PS5 USB port with a known-good cable. If it charges there, the wall adapter or its connection is the likely issue. Sony also recommends testing another PS5 USB port and another charging/data cable. Sony troubleshooting steps
- Seek support if the tests fail. If the controller will not charge from known-good sources, or it behaves erratically, contact PlayStation Support about repair. If it becomes unusually hot, swells, or smells unusual, disconnect it and stop using it.
Wall adapter, PS5, or charging dock?

Sony says its station includes an AC adapter and power cord, charges up to two DualSense or DualSense Edge controllers, and charges as fast as when connected to the PS5.
