How to Play Xbox on a TV: HDMI, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can play Xbox on a TV three ways: connect an Xbox console by HDMI, stream games from the cloud on a supported TV or streaming device, or use Remote Play to stream games from your own console. HDMI is the simplest and most responsive choice if you own a console; cloud gaming can work without one; Remote Play is for reaching your console from another screen.

Choose the right way to play Xbox on your TV

Method Console needed? Where the game runs Best for Main trade-off
HDMI Yes On the Xbox console Lowest latency, installed games, discs where supported, and local multiplayer The console must be connected to the TV
Cloud gaming No Xbox cloud servers Playing on a supported smart TV or streaming device without buying a console Needs a supported device, compatible controller, eligible game access, and a stable internet connection
Remote Play Yes On your Xbox console Playing games installed on your console from another room or compatible device Console availability and network quality affect the stream

A smart TV is not automatically compatible with the Xbox app. Support depends on the exact model, operating-system version, software updates, and market. Check Xbox’s current supported TV and device list before choosing a streaming setup.

Connect an Xbox console to the TV with HDMI

What you need

  • An Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X.
  • The console’s power cable and a compatible HDMI cable.
  • A TV with an available HDMI input.
  • An Xbox controller with batteries or a rechargeable battery pack.
  • Internet access if you need to sign in, download games, or install updates. Ethernet is optional.

Set up the connection

  1. Place the console where it has ventilation and can reach the TV and a power outlet.
  2. Connect the HDMI cable from the Xbox’s HDMI OUT port to an open HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Connect the Xbox to power and turn on the TV.
  4. Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input you used.
  5. Turn on the Xbox with the console’s power button or the Xbox button on the controller.
  6. Follow the on-screen setup to choose a language and region, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and sign in to or create a Microsoft account. Install system updates if prompted, then pair or update the controller as directed.
  7. Insert a game disc if your console has a disc drive, or install a digital game from your library.

Get the display settings right

  • Enable the TV’s Game Mode to reduce delay caused by image processing.
  • If you want 4K, HDR, or a high refresh rate, use a TV HDMI port that supports those features. Some televisions reserve them for particular inputs.
  • Enable 4K or HDR only when the Xbox model, TV, selected HDMI port, and cable support the feature. On Series X|S, review TV & display options on the console for resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and compatibility notices.
  • Display capabilities differ among Xbox One, One S, One X, Series S, and Series X. Series S does not deliver native 4K in every game; resolution and performance also depend on the title.

If the TV says “No signal”

  1. Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
  2. Check that the cable is in the console’s HDMI OUT port, not an HDMI input.
  3. Unplug and reconnect both ends of the cable, then try another TV HDMI port.
  4. Try a known-good HDMI cable and power-cycle both the TV and Xbox.
  5. Temporarily connect the Xbox directly to the TV, bypassing an HDMI switch, AV receiver, capture card, or soundbar that could disrupt the signal.
  6. If the console powers on but the picture stays blank, follow the current Xbox Support display troubleshooting instructions. The low-resolution startup procedure differs by console generation, so do not assume one model’s button sequence applies to another.

Play through the Xbox app on a TV or streaming device

Xbox cloud gaming runs a game on Xbox’s servers and streams the picture and sound to your screen. It can let you play without owning a console, but only on supported devices and with eligible game access. Xbox’s supported-device list changes, so check the official Xbox on TVs page for your exact model and region.

Check device compatibility

Xbox lists selected Samsung Smart TVs from 2020 onward and selected Samsung monitors from 2022 onward; selected LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer, including some 2022 and 2023 models updated to software 23.20.01 or higher; selected Amazon Fire TV devices; and selected VIDAA OS devices, including supported models on VIDAA OS 9.6 or newer. The listed Fire TV models include Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st and 2nd generation), Fire TV Cube (3rd generation), and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd generation).

These are not blanket guarantees for every product in a brand or model year. Availability can vary by market and software version. For Samsung, check the current Gaming Hub device list; for VIDAA, confirm the specific model with VIDAA support.

What you need

  • A supported TV or streaming device with current software.
  • A compatible Bluetooth controller paired to the TV or streaming device.
  • A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile.
  • An eligible subscription or other access route for the game you want. Most TV cloud games require a Game Pass plan that includes cloud gaming; selected free-to-play games may be exceptions.
  • A stable internet connection. Xbox recommends wired networking or 5-GHz Wi-Fi and approximately 20 Mbps or higher for best performance on TV-class devices. This is a baseline, not a promise of smooth play: latency, congestion, interference, and routing also matter.

An Xbox-branded controller is not the only possibility. Xbox says certain PlayStation controllers and other verified controllers may work, but compatibility depends on the controller and receiving device. Check the current Xbox controller guidance for smart-TV cloud gaming before buying or pairing one.

Start a cloud game

  1. Confirm that the exact TV or streaming-device model is on Xbox’s supported list.
  2. Install available system updates on the TV or device.
  3. Open the TV’s app store, Gaming Hub, or gaming portal and install or launch the Xbox app.
  4. Pair the controller in the TV or streaming device’s Bluetooth settings.
  5. Open the Xbox app and sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the subscription or game.
  6. Choose a cloud-enabled game and wait for the stream to start.
  7. If the stream is unstable or the picture is poor, try wired Ethernet or 5-GHz Wi-Fi, reduce competing network traffic, and move closer to the router.

Understand subscription and streaming limits

Game Pass plans do not all include the same cloud features or games. Xbox’s current plan comparison lists TV cloud streaming with Ultimate and Premium; the plan pages describe different libraries and benefits. Verify that your plan and chosen game are eligible in your region. Xbox’s Game Pass page displays current plan details, while Xbox Wire’s April 21, 2026 update reported U.S. monthly prices of $22.99 for Ultimate and $13.99 for PC Game Pass after a price change. Prices and availability can differ by region and change over time.

Cloud play is less predictable than a local HDMI connection. A stream can have more input delay, compressed or fluctuating image quality, startup delays or queues, and features that differ from installed play. Xbox also warns that streamed games may have limits involving resolution, audio outputs, saves, in-game purchases, companion apps, accessories, and peripherals. Local multiplayer and other game-specific features can vary by title and device.

Use Xbox Remote Play on another TV

Remote Play streams a game from your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console; it does not use the cloud-game library as its source. The game must be installed and playable on your console. Xbox supports Remote Play on compatible receiving devices, including some TVs and streaming devices. Check the current Remote Play requirements and supported-device information.

Prepare the console and receiving device

  • An Xbox One or Series X|S connected to the internet, with remote features enabled.
  • A compatible TV, streaming device, or other supported receiving device running the Xbox app or supported Remote Play option.
  • A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, and a compatible controller paired to the receiving device.
  • A suitable connection for both the console and receiving device. Xbox lists 5-GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data and a 10 Mbps download figure for its supported Remote Play setup; treat that figure as a baseline, not a guarantee. Ethernet for the console and 5-GHz Wi-Fi for the receiver are preferable where practical.

Start Remote Play

  1. On the Xbox, open Settings and find the device or remote-features section.
  2. Enable remote features and run the console’s Remote Play test if one is offered. Menu labels and locations can change with system updates; use the current on-screen instructions if they differ.
  3. On the compatible TV or streaming device, open the Xbox app or supported Remote Play option and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
  4. Select the console or Remote Play option, then choose a game installed on the console.
  5. Pair the controller to the TV or receiving device. It usually does not need to be paired directly to the console for a streamed session.

If Remote Play does not connect

  • Console missing: Check that both sides use the same account, remote features are enabled, the console is online, and its power settings allow it to be available.
  • Game missing or unable to launch: Confirm it is installed and playable on the console. Remote Play is not a way to launch a cloud-only game from your console.
  • Delayed controls: Use Ethernet for the console if possible, switch the receiving device to 5-GHz Wi-Fi, reduce other network traffic, and keep the controller near the receiving device.
  • Disconnects: Check router stability and console availability settings. NAT or upload problems can also interfere; consult Xbox’s current Remote Play troubleshooting guidance.
  • No TV app: Use a supported streaming device or another supported receiving device, or connect the console to the TV by HDMI.

Troubleshoot common Xbox-on-TV problems

  • The Xbox app is missing: The TV may not be supported, its software may be out of date, or the app may not be available in your market. Check the exact model and region on Xbox’s compatibility page; a compatible Fire TV device or direct HDMI connection may be alternatives.
  • The controller will not pair: Put it into Bluetooth pairing mode and pair it through the TV or streaming device’s Bluetooth settings. Confirm that the controller is supported for that device and service.
  • A game is unavailable: Cloud catalogs and eligibility vary by game, plan, platform, region, and time. Confirm both the game’s cloud availability and your subscription access.
  • The stream looks blurry or keeps dropping: Prefer Ethernet or 5-GHz Wi-Fi, reduce competing traffic, and check for interference or weak signal. A high advertised download speed alone does not rule out latency, jitter, or packet loss.
  • Input feels delayed: For console gaming, use HDMI and the TV’s Game Mode. For streaming, improve the network path; cloud and Remote Play both add network-dependent delay.
  • 4K or HDR is unavailable: Check the Xbox model, game, TV capability, cable, and which HDMI port is in use. For a console, review TV & display options for compatibility notices. Streaming quality is subject to the service and game, so do not assume HDMI display capabilities apply to a cloud stream.
  • A receiver or soundbar causes a blank picture: Connect the Xbox directly to the TV temporarily. If that works, check the intermediate device’s HDMI and video-format support before reconnecting it.

Which setup makes sense for you?

  • Choose HDMI if you own a console and care most about responsiveness, broad game compatibility, discs or installed games, and local play.
  • Choose cloud gaming if you do not own a console, your TV or streaming device is supported, and the games you want are available through an eligible plan or access route.
  • Choose Remote Play if you own an Xbox and want to play its installed games on another screen without moving the console.
  • For an unsupported TV, connect an Xbox or PC by HDMI, or use a streaming device only after confirming the exact device is supported.
