On Xbox, Crunchyroll subtitles are controlled inside the video player—not in the console’s system accessibility settings. Start an episode, open the player controls, choose the Settings gear, select Subtitles/CC, and choose an available language.
Turn on subtitles during playback
- Open the Crunchyroll app on your supported Xbox device.
- Start the episode you want to watch.
- Reveal the video-player controls.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Open Subtitles/CC.
- Choose a language, such as English, then return to playback.
Text should appear as soon as the selected subtitle track loads. Crunchyroll documents this player path for supported devices in its subtitle-language instructions.

Change the subtitle language
Changing languages uses the same menu: while the episode is playing, open Settings → Subtitles/CC, then select another listed language. The menu only shows tracks supplied for that title and episode. Availability can also differ by region or version of the content; changing your preference cannot create a track that Crunchyroll does not provide. Turn subtitles off
- Open the player controls during playback.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Choose Subtitles/CC.
- Select the disabled or off option, if it is offered.
Crunchyroll says closed captions can be turned on or off for supported shows. Some Japanese-language content has subtitles that cannot be disabled because of licensing or regional requirements, so an off option may legitimately be absent. Crunchyroll’s Xbox support page describes the supported-show limitation, and its forced-subtitle explanation covers the exception.

Set a default subtitle language
For future viewing, set an account preference rather than changing every episode individually:
- Open your Crunchyroll Account or profile settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Find Subtitle/CC Language.
- Choose your preferred default language.
The exact location can look different on Xbox, the website, and mobile apps. This preference selects a default only when the title offers that language; the in-player menu remains the quickest way to override it for one episode. Crunchyroll documents both settings in its subtitle-language guide.

Subtitles versus closed captions
Subtitles generally translate spoken dialogue. Closed captions may also describe relevant non-dialogue audio, such as music or sound effects. Crunchyroll groups these controls under Subtitles/CC, but a title may not provide separate subtitle and caption tracks or the same languages for both.
If Subtitles/CC is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Make sure an episode is actively playing, not just open on its details screen.
- Move the controller to reveal the playback controls and look for the Settings gear.
- Check Subtitles/CC, rather than only the audio-language menu.
- Try another episode or title. If the option appears there, the first title is likely the limitation.
- Update the Crunchyroll app: Xbox Home → My games & apps → Apps → Crunchyroll → Options/Menu → Check for Updates. This path is listed by Crunchyroll support.
- Exit and reopen the episode, restart the Crunchyroll app, and restart the Xbox if the controls fail to load.
- Check that the account, app, and title are available in your region.
If English is not listed, the episode may not include an English track, regional licensing may limit the choices, or the app may need to refresh. Do not assume an account preference can add an unavailable language.

When subtitles are delayed or out of sync
Crunchyroll’s documented Xbox instructions do not identify a title-specific subtitle-sync control. Pause and resume playback, leave and reopen the episode, restart the app, and check for updates. If the same episode works on another supported device, the problem may be Xbox-specific; persistent issues should be reported to Crunchyroll support.
Xbox interface and compatibility notes
These steps apply to the Crunchyroll app on supported Xbox devices. Menu placement can vary slightly with the console or app version, so look for the labels Settings, Subtitles/CC, and subtitle language rather than relying on an old screenshot or a fixed controller-button sequence. Crunchyroll’s redesigned Xbox app announced in 2023 added in-playback subtitle-language and off controls, but that announcement is historical context, not a guarantee that every current screen is identical: Crunchyroll’s announcement.

The Bottom Line
Play the episode, open the player’s Settings gear, choose Subtitles/CC, and select an available language. If the menu or off option is missing, test another title and update the Crunchyroll Xbox app; some content intentionally requires subtitles.
