To connect an Oculus Quest controller, open the Meta Horizon app, select your headset, and start controller pairing. Choose the correct side, then hold Menu + Y on the left controller or Meta/Oculus + B on the right until its light flashes and the app detects it. The exact controller family and app labels depend on your headset model, so identify your Quest before pairing or buying a replacement.

Identify your Quest and controller first

“Oculus Quest” is still a common name for the headset family, but current branding is Meta Quest, and the phone companion app is Meta Horizon. Controller generations are not automatically interchangeable.

Headset Controller family and identifying detail Replacement note
Quest 2 Earlier Touch controllers with prominent tracking rings; the right-hand button may carry the Oculus logo. Match a replacement to Quest 2; do not assume a newer controller will work.
Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers without prominent external tracking rings. Meta identifies Touch Plus as the standard controller family for Quest 3. Check the listing for the exact headset compatibility. Quest 3 product information
Quest 3S Touch Plus controller family. Verify the seller’s compatibility statement and the correct side.
Quest Pro Touch Pro controllers, with different hardware and pairing considerations. Do not assume Quest 3 or 3S replacement controllers are interchangeable.

For a single replacement, confirm the headset model, left/right side, and controller family before ordering. “Oculus controller” alone is not specific enough to establish compatibility. Meta’s accessories page and the listing for the Touch Plus controller can help you check the product’s stated fit; availability and fit should be verified for your region.

Before you pair

  • Turn on the headset and make sure it has enough charge to complete setup.
  • Install or update the Meta Horizon app on a compatible phone. Sign in with the Meta account associated with the headset.
  • Enable Bluetooth on the phone and keep it near the headset and controller. Do not assume both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network unless the app specifically asks.
  • Check that the controller is not still connected to another Quest headset.
  • Insert a correctly oriented, working AA battery. Make sure the contacts are clean and the battery cover is seated.

Pair a left or right controller in Meta Horizon

  1. Wake the headset. Press its power button and put it on if prompted.
  2. Open Meta Horizon on your phone.
  3. Open the device section. Tap Devices or the closest device-management label shown in your app.
  4. Select your Quest headset. If more than one appears, choose the headset you are pairing to.
  5. Open controller management. Look under Headset settings, Controllers, or a similar controller-management screen.
  6. Start pairing. Choose Pair new controller, Pair controller, or the equivalent option, then select Left or Right.
  7. Put the controller in pairing mode. Reseat its AA battery if needed, then hold the button combination for its side until the light flashes:
    • Left: hold Menu + Y.
    • Right: hold Meta/Oculus + B. On some older controllers, the Meta button is marked with the Oculus logo.
  8. Finish in the app. Keep the app open and follow its confirmation prompt. A flashing light during the button hold usually indicates pairing mode; it does not by itself prove that pairing completed.
  9. Pair the other side if needed. Repeat the process and select the other hand.

The button combinations are described in a Meta community pairing discussion. App names and menu labels can change with app version, phone platform, headset, or account state, so follow the closest equivalent in your current app. A supplementary setup guide also shows the app-based pairing workflow.

Reconnect a controller you already paired

Previously paired controllers normally reconnect to their headset when it is nearby and awake. If one does not reconnect, try these steps in order:

  1. Wake the Quest and press a button on the controller.
  2. Remove the AA battery, wait about 30 seconds, then install a known-good battery with the polarity correct.
  3. Restart the headset normally.
  4. Open Meta Horizon and check the controller status in the headset’s device settings.
  5. If the app offers an unpair or remove option, use it for that controller, then pair it again as the correct side.

Pairing and tracking are different. Pairing means the headset recognizes the controller electronically. Tracking means the headset can locate its position and orientation. A controller can be paired but still appear invisible or jump around if tracking conditions are poor.

Troubleshoot the symptom

Symptom What to try
No light or response Remove the battery for about 30 seconds, install a known-good AA with correct polarity, and check that the contacts and battery cover are seated. No light generally points to power or contact trouble, though it is not a definitive diagnosis.
App cannot find the controller Confirm the selected side, hold the correct pairing combination until the light flashes, keep the app open, and keep the phone and controller close to the headset.
Controller is powered but will not pair Check whether it is still paired to another headset, restart the Quest, and try removing and pairing it again in Meta Horizon.
Controller pairs but is invisible or jumps Improve room lighting, move it into the headset’s view, clear obstructions from headset cameras, and test without bulky grips or covers. Avoid direct sunlight and highly reflective surfaces.
Buttons do nothing or it disconnects repeatedly Check the battery and contacts, restart the headset, allow pending software updates to finish, and retry with the controller close to the headset.
Only one controller works Pair the missing controller separately, selecting its correct side. A working controller does not establish that the other one is paired.
Replacement will not pair Verify headset generation, controller family, and left/right designation. If previously used with another headset, it may need to be unpaired or reset first.

Work through battery and power issues safely

Use a fresh AA battery before assuming the controller has failed. Inspect the compartment for dirt or visible damage, but do not open the controller or bend its contacts aggressively; that can cause further damage. If the light behavior differs from what you expect, reseat the battery, restart the headset, and retry pairing.

Check tracking conditions

  • Use adequate, even room lighting; avoid direct sunlight and strong reflections.
  • Clean the headset cameras and controller surfaces with an appropriate dry microfiber cloth.
  • Move the controller into the headset’s field of view and remove bulky third-party covers or grips while testing.
  • Try hand tracking temporarily, if available, to help determine whether the issue is limited to controller tracking.

Meta describes controller tracking as a distinct headset capability; a tracking problem does not necessarily mean the controller failed to pair. See Meta’s explanation of controller tracking and Quest capabilities.

  • Each controller is designed with an ergonomic button layout and advanced haptics for more realistic feedback — transporting you right into mixed reality worlds.

Reduce wireless and software complications

Keep the phone near the headset, move away from a crowded Bluetooth environment if possible, and temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth accessories. Update the Meta Horizon app, let the headset complete pending updates, and restart it afterward. Keep the controller close to the powered-on headset while it updates. If only one side is affected, compare its behavior with the working controller before concluding that the headset is at fault.

Pair one replacement controller without replacing both

You can pair a single replacement from the controller-management screen: select the missing side, then follow the pairing steps above. Left and right controllers are distinct; do not assume one can be assigned to the other hand. If the replacement was previously used with another headset, its old pairing may need to be removed or its controller-specific reset procedure followed.

Before buying, check the exact Quest model and the replacement’s stated compatibility. Quest 2 controllers should not be treated as automatic replacements for Quest 3 or 3S, and Quest Pro has its own controller family. Meta’s community support has directed users to its replacement-parts page; verify the product, side, region, stock, warranty, and return terms before purchase.

Controller reset: use as a last resort

Reset instructions circulating in community discussions describe combinations such as holding A and tapping the Meta/Oculus button repeatedly on the right controller, or holding X and tapping Menu repeatedly on the left. These button sequences are not established here as current, official instructions for every controller generation or firmware. Do not rely on them as a guaranteed fix.

Official Left & Right Touch Plus Controllers for Meta Quest 3 / 3S (Pair)
  • This is the same left and right controllers included in-box with every Quest 3/3S purchase.
  • Compatible with Quest 3S & Quest 3
  • What’s included: Touch Plus controllers (Left & Right Pair), Wrist strap / lanyard, Safety and warranty guide
  • Each controller is designed with an ergonomic button layout and advanced haptics for more realistic feedback — transporting you right into mixed reality worlds.
  • Input Features: A/B/X/Y, Thumbstick, Thumbrest (all with capacitive touch), Two Stage Trigger, Precision Pinch

First look for a controller reset option in the app or headset, or follow Meta’s current model-specific support instructions. A reset may mean you need to pair the controller again, and it cannot repair physical damage.

When to contact Meta support

Contact Meta support if a known-good battery produces no response, the controller is physically damaged, it repeatedly disconnects after pairing, or the app detects it but pairing never completes after the steps above. Support is also the better next step if the headset or controller may be under warranty, or if you need to confirm a model-specific replacement. Have the headset model, controller side, serial information, purchase details, and the steps you already tried ready.

If setup is blocked because you have no usable controllers, hand tracking or headset buttons may allow limited navigation depending on the setup screen and software state, but not every screen can necessarily be completed that way. Try the app-based pairing flow or contact Meta support rather than jumping straight to a headset factory reset.
