You do not normally turn on a Razer Kishi with a power button. The controller activates when you attach a compatible, unlocked phone to its built-in USB-C or Lightning connector. Kishi models are wired, draw operating power from the phone, and do not use Bluetooth pairing for normal play. See Razer’s Kishi support and FAQs and Kishi V3 support and FAQs for model-specific compatibility.
How to turn on and connect a Razer Kishi
- Turn on and unlock your phone.
- Remove a thick case, battery case, or accessory that could prevent the phone port from reaching the Kishi connector.
- Open the controller by pulling apart its bridge or release mechanism.
- Check that the Kishi connector matches the phone: USB-C for USB-C models or Lightning for Lightning models.
- Center the phone between the grips and align the connector straight with the phone’s charging port.
- Press the phone gently into place until the connector is fully seated. Do not twist or force it.
- Open a game that supports physical controllers. You can also open Razer Nexus to check detection, update firmware, remap controls on supported models, or use other supported features.
There may be no startup notification or light. If the buttons and sticks work in a compatible game, the Kishi is active.
Is there a power button on the Razer Kishi?
Usually, no. Most Kishi models do not have a separate power switch because they are powered through the phone connection. The original Kishi has a function button and status indicator, but those are not a conventional on/off control. Buttons labeled Function, Home, Xbox, or similar should not be treated as power buttons.
Does a Razer Kishi need charging or Bluetooth?
Charging
The controller itself does not require charging for normal operation. It draws power from the connected phone. A pass-through USB-C or Lightning port on some models can charge the phone while you play; it does not charge an internal Kishi battery.

Bluetooth
Kishi controllers connect directly through the phone’s port rather than pairing wirelessly. If you are looking for wireless play or multi-device switching, a Bluetooth gamepad is a better fit.
Setup by Kishi model
| Model family | How it connects | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original Kishi (V1) | Wired USB-C Android or wired Lightning iPhone editions | Android and iPhone versions are different products and are not interchangeable. |
| Kishi V2 | Wired USB-C or Lightning editions | Confirm both the connector and the phone’s compatibility. |
| Kishi V2 Pro | Wired connection, with additional features on supported versions | It is not a rechargeable or wireless controller. |
| Kishi V3 | Wired USB-C connection | Designed for compatible Android phones and newer USB-C iPhones; check the current model list. |
| Kishi V3 Pro and V3 Pro XL | Wired connection for phones, mini-tablets, PCs, or larger tablets, depending on model | These larger controllers follow the same phone-powered principle but are not the simplest choice for a standard phone setup. |
Razer’s current product lineup is listed at razer.com/mobile/controllers/kishi-line. Physical fit alone does not prove electronic compatibility: port placement, connector type, operating-system behavior, and case clearance also matter.
Original Kishi V1
Unlock the phone, open the Kishi, and insert the phone so the built-in connector enters the port straight. The companion app is not required for basic controller input. For certain original Android configurations, Razer lists approximate supported dimensions of 145.3–163.7 mm height, 68.2–78.1 mm width, and 7.0–8.8 mm depth; treat these as model-specific limits, not universal rules for every Kishi.

Kishi V2 and V2 Pro
Open the extendable bridge, match the USB-C or Lightning connector to the phone, and seat the phone fully before launching a supported game. The USB-C Kishi V2 is a wired controller for compatible Android devices and USB-C iPhones, including the iPhone 15 series according to Razer’s support information. Do not apply that compatibility to every V2 edition.
Kishi V3
Pull apart the V3 bridge, place the phone between the grips, align the USB-C connector, and press the phone into place without twisting. Razer’s V3 instructions cover Android and iPhone setup. For a game that lacks native controller support but is eligible for Razer’s remapping feature, attach the V3, install Razer Nexus, select the game, and enable Virtual Controller before launching it. If that option is missing, Razer says the game does not support the feature.
How to tell whether the Kishi is working
- Open a known controller-compatible game and test both sticks, buttons, and triggers.
- Check whether the game changes from touch prompts to controller prompts; not every game displays a connection message.
- Open Razer Nexus and see whether the controller is identified.
- Use the app for firmware updates, supported remapping, game discovery, or V3 Virtual Controller setup.
- Do not diagnose a failed controller solely because an indicator stays dark; actual input is the meaningful test.
A controller recognized by Razer Nexus but ignored by one game is usually facing a game-support or input-mode limitation, not a power problem.

What to do if the Kishi does not turn on
“Does not turn on” usually means that the phone is not detecting the wired controller. Work through these checks in order:
- Remove the phone case and reseat the phone.
- Confirm that the connector is straight, clean, and fully inserted.
- Inspect the phone port and Kishi connector for lint or debris; clean carefully without damaging the contacts.
- Restart the phone, unlock it, and reconnect the Kishi.
- Test a second controller-compatible game and check Razer Nexus.
- Verify the exact Kishi generation, USB-C or Lightning version, phone model, operating system, and published compatibility list.
- On Android 11, temporarily disable accessibility services that can intercept input, including tools such as MacroDroid, Tasker, Autoclicker, or Automate, then test again. Razer documents this as a troubleshooting issue, not a universal cause.
- If the app detects the controller, install any available firmware update.
- Test the Kishi with another compatible phone if one is available. This helps separate a phone-port or software problem from a controller fault.
If it works in Nexus but not in the game
Check the game’s own controller setting and support documentation. Some games recognize only particular controller APIs, while others require V3 Virtual Controller mode. A game that supports touch input is not automatically a game that supports a physical controller.

Pass-through charging affects the phone, not controller activation. Confirm that the model supports charging, use an appropriate cable and port, remove case obstructions, and check the phone’s USB or OTG behavior. Razer’s setup guidance notes that disabling an OTG setting on some phones may be necessary while charging; see Razer’s setup support.

Firmware-update recovery for the original Kishi
Do not use firmware button combinations as a normal startup procedure. If an original Kishi Android firmware update is interrupted, Razer’s documented recovery is:
- Detach the Kishi from the phone.
- Reconnect it.
- Force-close and relaunch Razer Nexus or the applicable Kishi app.
- Restart the firmware update.
Razer also documents an original-Kishi update mode that uses Y + B + the right Function button while reconnecting the phone. Use that sequence only for the specific firmware procedure in Razer’s instructions at the original Kishi support page, not to switch on a working controller.
Check the connector before replacing the controller
If the steps above fail, first determine whether the model matches the phone. A Lightning Kishi is for compatible Lightning iPhones; it is not a solution for a USB-C iPhone or USB-C Android phone. Conversely, a USB-C model cannot be plugged into a Lightning phone without changing the controller itself.
