If your Nintendo Switch is frozen on a solid orange screen, hold the console’s POWER button for at least 20 seconds, release it, then press POWER once to restart. That is Nintendo’s recommended first step. If the screen stays orange or the problem keeps returning, further resets may not help; Nintendo says a persistent solid-color screen needs service.
“Orange Screen of Death” is community shorthand, not Nintendo’s official diagnosis. Nintendo describes the symptom as a solid orange, blue, or other-color screen when the system does not respond. These steps apply to the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model; service and warranty details below refer to the United States and Canada.
Confirm it is a solid-color freeze
A solid-color lockup means the whole display is uniformly orange and the console does not respond to buttons or touch. The HOME Menu, Nintendo logo, or game image does not appear. It can happen at startup, after waking from sleep, while docked, or during play. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance covers this symptom without identifying one cause for every case: Solid Color on Nintendo Switch Screen.
Rule out a display or power situation before treating it as the same fault:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Blank or dark screen: The battery may be depleted, or the system may be asleep. Try the power and charging checks below.
- Docked console: The handheld display turns off while the Switch is docked and its software is displayed on the TV. Undock it and test the console itself. Switch Lite is not compatible with a dock. See Nintendo’s power and display troubleshooting.
- TV-only problem: Test the console in handheld mode. A TV or dock output issue is not the same as a solid orange handheld display.
- Partial orange tint, cracks, impact, or liquid exposure: These may indicate a display or physical fault rather than a uniform software lockup. Do not keep charging a console with suspected liquid or battery damage.
Force the console off and restart it
- Remove the console from the dock.
- Press and hold the console’s POWER button for at least 20 seconds. Do not repeatedly tap it.
- Release POWER and wait several seconds.
- Press POWER once to start the console.
If the reset worked, the orange screen should disappear and the Nintendo logo or HOME Menu should appear. Nintendo specifies the 20-second hold for a solid-color screen in its official instructions. If nothing changes, move on to the power checks rather than repeating forced shutdowns over and over.
If the Switch will not restart, check its power path
- Unplug the AC adapter from both the wall and the console or dock, and leave it disconnected for 30 seconds.
- Remove the console from the dock and connect the adapter directly to the Switch.
- Press POWER once. If a charging indicator appears, leave the console charging for 15–30 minutes before trying again.
Nintendo identifies its Switch AC adapter as model HAC-002 and recommends using a licensed adapter. Inspect the cable and connectors for splits, fraying, looseness, or bending, and look for visible damage or debris around the USB-C port. Do not scrape inside the port with metal tools. These charging checks and adapter-reset instructions are in Nintendo’s no-power and blank-screen guidance. A charger can rule out a power problem; it cannot repair an internal fault.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Test without the game card and microSD card
After the console is powered off, remove the game card and microSD card, then try starting the Switch without them. Nintendo includes this step in its freeze and lock-up troubleshooting. Remove a game card only from the HOME Menu or while the system is powered off.
If the console starts, update the system before reinstalling the cards. Removing a microSD card does not remove save data stored in the console’s internal memory, but software stored on the card may need to be downloaded or installed again. A successful boot without the card does not, by itself, prove the card caused the orange screen.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
Update the system if it boots
- Open System Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom and select System.
- Select System Update.
This is Nintendo’s menu path in its solid-color screen and freeze guidance. The update step is possible only if the console can reach its settings.
Use Maintenance Mode only if ordinary recovery is not enough
If the console repeatedly freezes but you can access Maintenance Mode, Nintendo provides an initialization option intended to preserve save data. It is a later software-recovery step, not the first response to an orange screen and not a repair for failed hardware.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Turn the console off. If it responds, hold POWER for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Turn Off. If it will not turn off normally, hold POWER for at least 12 seconds.
- With the console off, press and hold Volume Up (+) and Volume Down (-).
- While holding both volume buttons, press POWER. Keep holding the volume buttons until Maintenance Mode appears.
- Select Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data, then select Next and confirm.
Nintendo says this option preserves save data, screenshots, and user information. However, software stored on the microSD card will no longer be usable and can be redownloaded through the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Do not casually choose a full initialization option: it is different and may erase data. See Nintendo’s Maintenance Mode instructions and initialization details.

Switch save data is stored in the console’s internal memory, not on the microSD card. Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud can help only for compatible games and only when a backup exists; Nintendo says the vast majority of games support it, but compatibility varies. Check the individual game rather than assuming its save is backed up. See the Nintendo Switch Online FAQ.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Nintendo says it will attempt to preserve saved data during factory service, but data may be lost and is not always recoverable. If the console becomes usable again, check cloud-backup status for the games you care about before sending it in. Nintendo’s Factory Service Terms & Conditions explain the data risk.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Stop trying software resets and arrange service if the display remains uniformly orange after the 20-second shutdown, the problem repeatedly returns, or the console cannot boot normally or into Maintenance Mode. Service is also appropriate for a damaged USB-C port, a console that will not charge with a known-good licensed adapter, or signs of impact or liquid damage. A console that becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, or shows signs of battery damage should not be charged or repeatedly powered on.
Nintendo’s solid-color guidance says a persistent screen needs service. In the United States and Canada, Nintendo’s standard hardware warranty is 12 months from purchase, and proof of purchase is required. Physical damage is not covered by the standard warranty. For a covered or out-of-warranty issue, open a request through Nintendo’s service center rather than mailing the console without authorization; Nintendo says not to send a product before contacting it or setting up a service request. See its service request information and warranty and service information.
Nintendo determines available service and any out-of-warranty charge through the service process; there is no universal price established here for this symptom. Nintendo may repair or replace the unit and may use refurbished parts or products. Its service terms provide a service warranty of 100 days or the remainder of the original warranty, whichever is greater, and warn that saved data may be lost. Check the current service terms for your case.
An independent repair shop is another possibility, especially outside warranty, but quality, parts, pricing, data handling, and repair capability vary. Before authorizing work, ask for a written diagnosis, a labor warranty, experience with your exact Switch model, and a clear data-preservation policy. Nintendo’s service terms say unauthorized modifications or tampering can affect service eligibility. Opening the console yourself is not a safe next step for a reader seeking to preserve warranty or data.
