Start with the low-risk sequence: restart Steam and Windows, finish Steam downloads, verify the game files, update Windows plus your GPU and audio drivers, then test with overlays, VR software, and other injectors disabled. Islands of Insight is now an offline-only Windows Steam game; its online servers closed on October 30, 2024, and the final update announced no further planned bug fixes or balance updates. Check support status and your PC first
This guide targets the Windows Steam version. Official support says Steam Deck, macOS, and Linux are not currently supported; Proton and other compatibility-layer fixes are therefore community workarounds rather than supported configurations. Check the platform support article.
The current Steam listing is the safer requirements baseline. An older official requirements page mentions Windows 7, so treat Windows 10 64-bit or newer as the practical minimum.

These figures come from the Steam store listing; the developer also specifies a 64-bit processor and operating system in its requirements article.

Identify where the failure occurs
- Steam changes from Running back to Play: suspect files, drivers, overlays, or a blocked dependency.
- Black screen: test a clean launch and driver/overlay changes before reinstalling.
- Main menu, then crash after Play Game: treat it as a world-loading, graphics, or save/configuration problem.
- UE4, D3D11, D3D12, DXGI, or video-memory message: prioritize drivers, overlays, dedicated-GPU selection, and graphics load.
- Online-service wording: the old online service is unavailable; use the current offline mode instead of trying to restore online play.
Work through the official fixes in order
1. Complete Steam updates and launch the current offline mode
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Select Islands of Insight and wait for every download or update to finish.
- Launch from Steam rather than an old desktop shortcut.
- Choose the available offline mode if Steam presents a mode choice.
Offline gameplay does not require the former game servers, although Steam still needs connectivity for authentication and downloads.
2. Restart Steam and Windows
Exit Steam from its system-tray menu, restart Windows, and try the game before opening browsers, recording tools, VR software, or tuning utilities. This clears hung Steam processes and temporary driver state, but is not a guaranteed fix.
3. Verify the installation
- In Steam Library, right-click Islands of Insight and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam reacquire damaged or missing files.
- Restart Steam and test again.
The developer recommends this procedure in its launch and installation troubleshooting guide. Verification repairs installation files, not a damaged save.
4. Update Windows, graphics, and audio drivers
Install pending Windows updates and restart. Then use the hardware maker’s official driver page—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. The developer specifically calls out both video and audio drivers. Do not use third-party driver-updater utilities.

On a laptop with switchable graphics, set the game to use the dedicated GPU. This is an edge case, not a universal diagnosis.
5. Address DirectX and rendering errors
The developer recommends updating DirectX. If the message mentions D3D11, D3D12, DXGI, vertex buffers, insufficient video memory, or an Unreal Engine rendering failure:
- Update the GPU driver.
- Close GPU-heavy applications.
- Disable overlays and capture tools.
- If you can reach the menu, reduce graphics settings and retry.
Do not add undocumented launch flags or download replacement DLLs. Community reports of D3D and loading failures are anecdotal, not proof of one universal bug.
6. Remove software conflicts
The official troubleshooting article specifically tells affected players to uninstall Oculus software. If Oculus is installed, test after removing it when the less disruptive steps fail. Also close or disable, one at a time:

- Steam, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, and Xbox Game Bar overlays
- OBS and other capture software
- MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner-style injectors
- VR software, RGB controllers, and hardware-monitoring utilities
- Third-party antivirus game-mode or injection features
Disconnect VR equipment and nonessential USB devices for the test.
7. Check firewall and proxy restrictions
The developer notes that shared networks, including university Wi-Fi, and proxies can block the game. Prefer allowing Steam and the game through Windows Firewall, removing an unnecessary proxy, or testing another network. Do not permanently disable the firewall. Network checks matter for Steam authentication, downloads, and stale launcher behavior; ordinary current gameplay is offline.
8. Perform a clean launch
- Close all nonessential background programs.
- Disable overlays and disconnect VR hardware.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
- If it works, re-enable programs one at a time until the conflict returns.
Targeted fixes by symptom
It closes immediately or never opens
Verify files, update Windows and GPU/audio drivers, disable overlays and Oculus software, and confirm adequate free space on the Windows system drive as well as the game drive. A game installed on another disk can still need space on C: for caches, saves, and crash data.
It reaches the menu but crashes after “Play Game”
A previous patch fixed a crash at this exact point that produced a UE4 report, so old forum advice may describe an already-addressed version. For a current repeatable crash, verify files, update the GPU driver, disable Oculus and overlays, confirm the dedicated GPU, and back up your save before changing data. It freezes on the loading screen
After a driver update or file verification, allow one initial load while watching Task Manager. A true freeze shows no meaningful change in CPU, disk, memory, or GPU activity. Reboot, check available system-drive space, verify files, update drivers, and retry with overlays disabled. Reports linking loading crashes to drivers, memory, disk space, or world loading are player observations rather than confirmed diagnoses.
It shows a black screen
Restart Windows, disable overlays and capture software, update the GPU driver, and try a clean launch. If the menu becomes available, lower graphics settings. Avoid deleting configuration or save files until a backup exists.

Do this before deleting configuration files, reinstalling, or trying a mod. The final update changed player-position save frequency after concerns about SSD wear and possible corruption. A community discussion identifies the likely offline location as %LOCALAPPDATA%IslandsofInsightSavedSaveGames and the file OfflineSavegame.sav; treat that location as community-supplied, not an official support instruction.
- Exit the game completely.
- Copy the entire
SaveGamesfolder to a separate drive or folder. - Keep the untouched copy while testing.
- Only restore it after a clean installation has launched successfully.
Do not delete a save as a first-line fix: it can destroy progression and does not repair the game installation.

Reinstall only after the lower-risk steps
- Back up the save folder.
- Uninstall the game through Steam.
- Check for leftover files in the installation folder.
- Reinstall to an SSD with sufficient free space.
- Launch the clean installation before restoring the backed-up save.
The developer lists reinstallation as a final step. It can replace damaged program files but cannot guarantee recovery from a corrupted save.
Unofficial options and their risks
The community’s Offline Restored Mod claims bug fixes, automatic save backups, reduced SSD wear, repaired puzzles, and restored unused content. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the developer. Consider it only after creating a separate save backup and only if you accept modified files, possible incompatibility, more difficult official support, and the need to roll back if Steam updates the installation. Avoid random DLL downloads, registry cleaners, unofficial DirectX packages, permanent antivirus or firewall shutdowns, undocumented launch flags, pirated copies, and unknown executables run as administrator.
When the problem persists
The official known-issues page, last updated July 10, 2024, is not a complete current launch-failure list and predates the offline transition. Check it, then contact the official support portal with:

- Whether the main menu opens
- Whether file verification changed anything
- Whether Oculus, overlays, or capture tools were installed
- Crash logs and a DxDiag report if support requests them
Because the final update announced no further planned bug fixes, support may be limited; nevertheless, a reproducible report is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling.
