Whether you actually hear it depends on the game or disc, your PS4 model, the HDMI or optical path, and whether the receiver or soundbar decodes that exact format. HDMI is the better route for high-resolution Blu-ray audio; the PS4 Slim (CUH-2000 series) has no optical jack.
What “DTS support” means on PS4
PS4 audio settings include Bitstream (DTS), alongside Linear PCM and Bitstream (Dolby). That setting prioritizes sending a compressed DTS bitstream to compatible equipment; it does not turn every source into DTS or add DTS to stereo content. Sony documents the setting and output ports here: PS4 audio output settings.
When an AVR displays “DTS,” it is decoding the incoming bitstream. The game may have generated multichannel audio in another format, or the PS4 may have packaged a compatible output stream for the receiver. Conversely, a receiver showing PCM is not necessarily a problem: Linear PCM can be multichannel and uncompressed.
Formats and what to expect
- DTS 5.1: The practical, widely supported DTS use case for PS4 games and compatible Blu-ray tracks.
- DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio: High-bandwidth Blu-ray formats best carried by HDMI. Optical cannot carry the full lossless stream; compatible equipment may use a lower-bandwidth DTS core.
- DTS:X: Object-based audio whose result depends on the disc, player behavior, HDMI chain, and receiver. PS4 support should not be assumed for every model or application.
- DTS Headphone:X and “DTS” gaming headsets: Usually headset-side virtual-surround processing, not a raw DTS bitstream sent to the headset.
How to enable DTS on PS4
- Open Settings.
- Select Sound and Screen, then Audio Output Settings.
- Set Primary Output Port to HDMI OUT for an HDMI receiver, soundbar, or TV, or to DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) on a model with that port.
- Open Audio Format (Priority) and choose Bitstream (DTS) when the receiving device explicitly supports DTS.
Choose Bitstream (Dolby) if the equipment supports Dolby but not DTS. Choose Linear PCM when your HDMI receiver accepts multichannel PCM, when the soundbar does not decode DTS, or while diagnosing a bitstream problem. Verify the equipment manual before selecting an unsupported format; Sony warns that an incompatible output choice can cause audio problems and, in its guide wording, may risk connected speakers: Sony user guide.

HDMI versus optical
| Connection | DTS 5.1 | DTS-HD Master Audio | Multichannel PCM | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Yes, with compatible equipment | Preferred path for compatible Blu-ray playback | Yes, when the receiver accepts it | Modern AVR or soundbar; high-resolution discs | TVs, switches, HDCP, or older receivers can alter or reject formats |
| Optical | Yes, standard DTS 5.1 | Not full-resolution DTS-HD | Generally not multichannel game PCM in the same way HDMI is | Older receivers with original PS4 or PS4 Pro | No optical port on PS4 Slim; limited bandwidth |
For the most reliable modern arrangement, connect PS4 → AVR or soundbar → TV. A PS4 → TV → optical soundbar chain may be reduced to stereo or another format because TV passthrough varies by model and firmware. Sony recommends direct connections and removing intermediary devices when isolating sound faults: PS4 picture and sound troubleshooting.
Does DTS work in PS4 games?
Yes, a game with multichannel support can work with a DTS-capable receiver or soundbar over a suitable HDMI or optical path. Naughty Dog’s PS4 configuration guidance specifically lists DTS 5.1ch and Dolby Digital 5.1ch choices for compatible equipment: Naughty Dog audio configuration.

The system priority is not a guarantee that every game internally uses DTS. A stereo-only game, TV, or soundbar may remain stereo. If you select Linear PCM over HDMI, the receiver may display PCM while still receiving 5.1 or 7.1 channels. Check the receiver’s channel readout and speaker activity, not just the format label.

Does DTS work with PS4 Blu-ray discs?
It can, provided the disc contains a DTS track and the receiver supports it. Blu-ray playback has a separate control:
- Start the disc.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Open playback Settings.
- Set Audio Format to Bitstream (Direct) so the receiver decodes the soundtrack. Denon documents this PS4 procedure at its PS4 bitstream guide.
The system menu cannot create DTS when the disc offers only Dolby or PCM. DTS 5.1 is suitable for legacy HDMI or optical surround equipment. DTS-HD Master Audio normally needs HDMI for full quality. DTS:X depends on the specific disc, player behavior, HDMI chain, and receiver, so do not treat a DTS setting as a universal DTS:X guarantee.

Does DTS work on PS4 Slim?
The original PS4 and PS4 Pro include DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). Sony identifies the CUH-2000 series—the PS4 Slim family—as lacking an optical digital-output terminal: Sony’s output-port documentation. The missing jack is a model feature, not a defect.
PS4 Slim owners can use an HDMI-capable AVR or soundbar, connect through a TV that reliably supports the required return or passthrough format, or use an HDMI audio extractor. An extractor must explicitly support your required 4K, HDR, refresh-rate, HDCP, and audio formats; inexpensive units may support only stereo PCM or legacy 5.1.
Why does my receiver say PCM, stereo, or unsupported?
PCM is not automatically stereo
Linear PCM can be multichannel. Confirm the number of channels the receiver reports. A “2.0 PCM” result points instead to a stereo source, an incorrect output path, a TV limitation, or a device that accepts only stereo.

Receiver reports unsupported
- The receiver or soundbar may not decode DTS, or may support DTS 5.1 but not DTS-HD or DTS:X.
- Optical may be asked to carry a format beyond its capability.
- A TV, switch, capture device, or extractor may have changed the signal.
- The Blu-ray player may still be set to Linear PCM rather than Bitstream (Direct).
- The selected disc track may not be supported.
- An HDMI handshake, cable, firmware, or HDCP issue may be involved.
For testing, connect the PS4 directly to the receiver or soundbar, try another HDMI cable and input, confirm firmware, and remove intermediary devices. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance covers this isolation process at PlayStation Support.
A practical diagnostic order
- Check that the receiver supports the exact DTS format and transport (HDMI or optical).
- Confirm the PS4’s Primary Output Port.
- Set Bitstream (DTS), then test a known DTS 5.1 source.
- For Blu-ray, separately select Bitstream (Direct).
- Bypass the TV, switch, or extractor with a direct HDMI connection.
- Try Linear PCM over HDMI. If multichannel PCM works, the speakers and path are functional and the issue is DTS compatibility or handshaking.
What about DTS headphones?
PS4’s Output to Headphones control can send all audio or only chat audio; the default is Chat Audio: Sony’s headphone settings. USB headsets, wireless transmitters, controller-connected analog headsets, and HDMI/optical headphone processors use different paths.
A headset advertised with DTS or DTS Headphone:X commonly performs licensed or proprietary virtual-surround processing internally. That does not mean the PS4 is sending it a raw DTS movie bitstream. Sony’s Platinum Wireless Headset documentation illustrates a PS4-compatible wireless workflow but is model-specific: Platinum Wireless Headset manual.

USB files, media players, and streaming apps
DTS behavior outside games and Blu-ray is application- and file-dependent. A USB or DLNA file may play, fail silently, be transcoded, or be converted by the application. A DTS-capable receiver cannot help if the PS4 app cannot decode or pass that stream. Sony’s user-guide index lists Media Player information but does not establish one universal, current DTS codec table for every playback path: English PS4 guide.
Do not infer DTS support for Netflix, Disney+, Plex, YouTube, or another service from the console’s Bitstream (DTS) option. Check the individual app and content support.
Choosing the right setting
- Bitstream (DTS): Use when the receiver explicitly supports DTS and you want it to decode a source that actually contains DTS.
- Linear PCM: Prefer over HDMI when the receiver accepts multichannel PCM, especially for games or compatibility troubleshooting.
- HDMI: Choose for PS4 Slim, multichannel PCM, and high-resolution Blu-ray audio.
- Optical: Use with original PS4 or PS4 Pro and an older receiver for standard DTS 5.1, accepting its bandwidth limits.
Final verdict
PS4 does support DTS output, with standard DTS 5.1 the clearest and most broadly useful case. Games require compatible surround implementation and equipment; Blu-ray requires a DTS soundtrack plus the separate Bitstream (Direct) playback setting. HDMI is the correct choice for DTS-HD-class Blu-ray audio, while optical is limited to legacy surround and unavailable on PS4 Slim. PCM can be perfectly correct when it carries multichannel audio, and DTS support for headsets, streaming apps, and media files remains model- and application-specific.
