For the newest game support or a laptop-specific fix, identify the exact GPU first, then use the official NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or computer-manufacturer package. Windows Update is usually the lowest-risk choice, but it may not offer the newest vendor release.
What a graphics-driver update changes
A graphics driver is the software layer that lets Windows and applications communicate with a GPU. An update can add support for new games, Windows builds, monitors and graphics APIs, and can fix crashes, flickering, black screens, timeouts, security issues or corrupted installations. It is not a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade: one game may improve while another is unchanged or develops a regression.
Before downloading anything
Identify every GPU
- Press Windows key + X, choose Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and record each exact model.
- For a second check, press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiag, and inspect the Display or Render tab for the name, manufacturer, driver date and version. - Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Performance, and inspect GPU 0, GPU 1 and any other entries.
Integrated Intel or AMD graphics plus a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU is normal, especially on laptops. The internal panel may be wired to one adapter while demanding applications use another. Do not remove an adapter merely because it is not the discrete card.
Record the installed version
Use Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver, or the vendor’s own NVIDIA, AMD or Intel software. Compare the version with the official package for the exact model and Windows 11; the driver date alone does not establish which is newer.

Choose the right source
- Windows Update: best default for a stable PC, office system, laptop or prebuilt machine.
- GPU maker: use for a new game, a specific bug fix, the newest Game Ready, Studio, Adrenalin or Arc package, or a reinstall Windows Update does not provide.
- Computer maker: start here on laptops and hybrid-graphics systems when brightness, sleep, docking, USB-C/HDMI output, battery life or GPU switching matters.
Download only from official Windows, GPU-vendor or OEM sites. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
Method 1: Windows Update (the safest default)
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates and restart.
- Return to Windows Update, open Advanced options → Optional updates, and install a graphics-driver update if one is listed.
- Restart again when requested, then verify the version in Device Manager.
Microsoft says Windows Update normally downloads drivers for most hardware, including video cards, and recommends it as the automatic route. Its package may be validated or OEM-targeted rather than the newest NVIDIA, AMD or Intel release. A driver can be absent from Optional updates even when the manufacturer has published a newer one, and Device Manager may report that the best driver is installed for the search path it used. See Microsoft’s driver guidance.
Method 2: Device Manager
Search automatically
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the GPU, choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- If offered, choose Search for updated drivers on Windows Update; restart if prompted.
Install a downloaded package manually
- Download the correct package from the GPU or PC manufacturer and extract it if necessary.
- In Device Manager, right-click the GPU and choose Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers.
- Browse to the extracted folder, select Next, and restart.
The package must match the GPU, Windows 11 edition/architecture and, where applicable, the OEM configuration. To reinstall, choose Uninstall device in the adapter’s context menu, restart, then install the official package. To reverse a recent change, open Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver; administrator permission is required and the button may be unavailable if no previous package is retained.

- WINDFORCE cooling system
Method 3: NVIDIA graphics
Use NVIDIA’s driver page for manual search, or the NVIDIA App for supported automatic updates.
- Select the exact GeForce, RTX, Quadro or professional/laptop family, model, Windows 11 and driver type.
- Download the installer, close games and GPU-heavy applications, and run it (approve administrator access if requested).
- Use the normal installation for a routine update. Choose Custom installation for component choices.
- Select Perform a clean installation only for corruption, repeated installer failure, malfunctioning NVIDIA components/settings or a branch change; it is not required every time.
- Restart and verify the version.
Game Ready Drivers target game launches and gaming fixes; Studio Drivers prioritize tested creator-app support. Professional/workstation branches are separate. NVIDIA notes that installation can fail while Windows Update is actively running; finish or pause that update, restart, and try again: NVIDIA support.
Method 4: AMD graphics
Download from AMD’s driver page. It covers Radeon GPUs and Ryzen processors with graphics. For consumer Radeon hardware, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is the main package and management application (AMD Adrenalin details).

- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Identify the exact Radeon GPU or Ryzen processor and select the matching Windows 11 package.
- Run the installer and use the normal upgrade option for a routine update.
- Use the installer’s reset or cleanup option only for corruption, failed updates, conflicts or persistent driver problems.
- Restart and confirm the version in Device Manager or Adrenalin.
On a laptop, check the computer maker first: a generic AMD package can affect display switching, hotkeys, power behavior or external outputs.
Method 5: Intel graphics
Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant can detect supported Intel hardware and show available updates. Manual selection is also available for Intel Arc discrete GPUs and integrated graphics.
- Run the detection tool or identify the exact Arc, UHD or Iris model in Device Manager/dxdiag.
- Review the proposed Windows 11 package, install it, and restart.
- On an OEM laptop or unusual configuration, prefer the computer maker’s validated package if Intel’s tool does not support the system or if functions fail.
Desktop and laptop differences
Desktop
- Retail NVIDIA, AMD or Intel cards generally use the GPU maker’s package.
- For integrated graphics or chipset-related display issues, check the motherboard maker too.
- A cable connected to the motherboard may mean the display is using integrated graphics instead of the discrete card.
Laptop
- Start with the laptop manufacturer’s support page, especially for hybrid graphics.
- Install chipset, integrated-graphics and discrete-GPU packages in the OEM’s stated order when one is specified.
- Generic drivers can work, but may change brightness, sleep/wake, docking, USB-C/HDMI, battery life or GPU switching.
Verify the update
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters → GPU → Properties → Driver and confirm provider, version and date.
- Use
dxdiagas a second check. - Confirm the expected resolution, refresh rate, hardware acceleration and external-monitor detection.
- Open a representative game or graphics application and ensure NVIDIA App, AMD Software or Intel software launches normally.

If the update causes problems
Installer fails
- Restart and install pending Windows updates.
- Close games, overlays, monitoring tools and GPU utilities.
- Temporarily disconnect VPNs or restrictive network filters.
- Download the installer again from the official source and run it as administrator.
- Use the vendor reset/clean option, then Device Manager uninstall/reinstall if necessary.
- Use Safe Mode only for serious corruption, and roll back if symptoms began immediately after the update.
Black screen
- Wait several minutes in case installation is still completing.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B; the screen may blink or beep.
- Check the cable, monitor input and another output if available, then restart.
- If Windows cannot reach the desktop, enter Windows Recovery Environment, choose Startup Settings → Safe Mode, and roll back or uninstall the display driver.
- Install the previous stable or OEM package after recovery.
Flickering or scrambled image
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Task Manager flickers too, suspect the display driver; if it remains steady while other content flickers, suspect an incompatible application. Reset the driver, roll back, or test Safe Mode. Microsoft’s diagnostic steps are documented here.
Windows replaces your package
Windows Update can independently provide a driver that is newer, older or differently targeted than the vendor installer. Do not routinely disable all driver updates; that can block useful fixes. If a particular update repeatedly conflicts, record the Windows build, GPU model, driver version and error before considering version-specific policy changes.
“Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” appears
The vendor driver is absent, unavailable or not loaded. Identify the exact GPU with Device Manager, dxdiag, hardware properties or the PC model, then install the official matching package. Never substitute a random “VGA driver.”

Performance gets worse
Roll back or install the prior vendor archive package, use the OEM driver on a laptop, or switch NVIDIA branches where appropriate. Check game settings, shader compilation, overlays and power mode before blaming the driver; newest does not always mean best.
Windows upgrade compatibility holds
Microsoft has used safeguard holds when particular NVIDIA display-driver versions created Windows 11 upgrade risks. If Windows blocks a feature update for a graphics-driver reason, install the required newer compatible driver first and do not force the upgrade with unofficial workarounds. Affected versions and holds change; consult Microsoft’s dated release-health guidance, such as this NVIDIA adapter notice.
Quick Recap
What a graphics-driver update is not
- It is not a GPU firmware or BIOS update.
- A BIOS update is a separate, higher-risk procedure.
- Chipset drivers can matter, but they do not replace the display driver.
- Windows Update may offer several unrelated device-driver categories.
