There is no universal Windows 11 “boost FPS” switch. The most dependable gains come from using the correct GPU and power mode, keeping drivers healthy, reducing demanding in-game settings, removing competing background work, and fixing the actual bottleneck. Windows features such as Game Mode, HAGS, VRR, and windowed-game optimizations can help particular systems, but they must be tested rather than treated as guaranteed upgrades.
Measure before changing anything
Use one or two representative games and record the same scene or built-in benchmark at least twice. Keep the game build, resolution, refresh rate, graphics API, preset, driver, and power state unchanged between tests.
- Average FPS, 1% lows, frame time, and, if available, 0.1% lows.
- GPU utilization, temperature, clock speed, and VRAM use.
- CPU utilization, temperature, effective clock, and package power.
- System RAM use, storage activity, and whether performance declines after several minutes.
A GPU near 95–100% with spare CPU capacity points to resolution, ray tracing, volumetrics, shadows, or upscaling choices. Low GPU usage while one or more CPU threads are saturated usually indicates a CPU or game-simulation limit. Nearly full RAM or VRAM can cause asset-streaming hitching. A gradual FPS decline suggests thermal or power throttling. High average FPS with uneven motion calls for frame-pacing, VRR, cap, overlay, and background-process checks.
Apply the safe Windows changes first
Update Windows and choose the right driver
Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install optional driver updates only when they address your hardware or a known problem. Obtain graphics drivers from the vendor or, on laptops, check the manufacturer’s support page first: NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. Laptop OEM packages can preserve hybrid-graphics switching, display routing, sleep, and power controls that a generic desktop package may not.

NVIDIA describes its Game Ready drivers as game-focused releases. A newer driver is not automatically faster for every title. If a new release causes crashes, corruption, stutter, or abnormal performance, roll back or perform a clean installation and retest.
Set Game Mode
Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and turn it on. Game Mode is intended to reduce background interference and is a sensible default, but it is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier. If a specific game, eGPU, handheld, anti-cheat system, or utility behaves worse, benchmark with it off. Do not confuse Game Mode with Xbox Game Bar, recording, or a third-party booster. See NVIDIA’s latency guide.
Use the correct GPU
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select the game, or add its executable, choose Options > High performance > Save. A launcher and the actual game executable may need separate entries. Verify the result in Task Manager or your GPU software. On some laptops the internal panel is wired to the integrated GPU, so selecting the discrete GPU does not remove every routing cost; connecting a monitor to a discrete-GPU output can matter on desktops.
Set refresh rate and VRR
In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor’s highest stable refresh rate, then check the game, cable, port, HDR, and monitor overdrive settings. A 144 Hz panel configured at 60 Hz still behaves as a 60 Hz display.

Enable compatible FreeSync, G-SYNC, or Adaptive-Sync in the monitor menu and GPU software, and enable Windows VRR where available. VRR reduces tearing and makes fluctuating frame rates feel smoother; it does not create more FPS. A cap slightly below the monitor’s maximum can improve consistency, but V-Sync behavior varies by vendor, game, and display.
Choose a power profile appropriate to the device
For a plugged-in desktop or laptop, use Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance when sustained performance matters. Microsoft warns that this can increase heat, fan noise, and laptop battery drain; see its performance guidance and power-settings guidance. Laptops and handhelds may also require the OEM’s Performance or Turbo mode and an adequately rated charger. A fixed wattage or thermal limit cannot be defeated by a Windows toggle.
Reduce competing background work
Open Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Startup apps and disable unnecessary launchers and updaters. Close browsers with many tabs, video calls, cloud-sync clients, and virtual machines while benchmarking. Test overlays one at a time—Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA App, AMD Software, Intel Graphics Software, recording, and RGB utilities—because they can affect frame pacing or capture. Do not randomly disable Windows services or security protection. Microsoft’s Task Manager guidance covers startup and resource diagnosis.
Configure Windows graphics features deliberately
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS)
Use Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings > Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, where available. HAGS moves much scheduling work from the CPU to dedicated GPU hardware. Compatible hardware and drivers are required, and results vary. Benchmark both states with identical passes, judging frame times and stability rather than an instantaneous FPS counter. HAGS can interact with frame generation, capture, hybrid graphics, and driver versions. If crashes, missing frame generation, or new stutter appears, switch it back and reboot. Microsoft explains the feature in its Graphics settings article.

Optimizations for windowed games
Under Settings > System > Display > Graphics, enable Optimizations for windowed games; restart the game. For a title-specific choice, select the game and open Options. Microsoft targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games, moving presentation toward the flip model and enabling features such as VRR and Auto HDR in supported cases. It is not a universal improvement for exclusive fullscreen, DirectX 12, Vulkan, or incompatible titles. Disable it for a title if HDR, overlays, capture, alt-tab behavior, or frame pacing worsens. See Microsoft’s documentation.
Auto HDR is visual, not an FPS setting
Auto HDR can change the appearance of supported SDR games. Treat it as an image-quality choice, not a promised performance upgrade, and test it alongside windowed-game behavior.
Tune the game for the largest gains
Use the game’s benchmark mode when available and change one setting at a time.
- Highest impact: output resolution, render scale, ray or path tracing, global illumination, volumetrics, shadows, reflections, crowd and traffic density, view distance, geometry, and vegetation.
- Moderate impact: ambient occlusion, screen-space reflections, effects, terrain, and texture filtering.
- Usually low impact when VRAM is sufficient: texture quality, anisotropic filtering, small post-processing effects, and UI quality.
Keep textures high when VRAM permits, reduce ray tracing before texture quality, and lower CPU-heavy crowd or view-distance options when the processor is limiting performance. A stable frame cap can feel better than chasing erratic peaks.

Upscaling and dynamic resolution
DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and game-specific temporal or dynamic-resolution systems render internally below the output resolution and reconstruct it. Start with a Quality or Balanced mode and compare image quality, frame time, shimmer, and latency—not just the FPS number. Native resolution is not automatically preferable when the GPU is the bottleneck. Microsoft also documents Automatic Super Resolution; availability depends on supported hardware, games, and Windows versions.
Frame generation and latency features
Frame generation can raise the displayed frame rate, but generated frames do not make the simulation run at the same rate. Artifacts and added latency are more noticeable when base FPS is low, so use it only after achieving a sufficiently high native or upscaled base rate. DLSS, Reflex, Radeon Anti-Lag, Chill, and similar controls vary by GPU, driver, and game; avoid stacking competing latency modes without checking the game’s own recommendations. The NVIDIA App exposes supported game and driver controls, but it is not a universal optimizer.

Thermals and throttling
Monitor GPU temperature and hotspot, CPU temperature, effective clocks, power draw, and FPS together. Dust, blocked vents, aggressive laptop power limits, weak chargers, poor case airflow, or fan curves can cause a simultaneous drop in clocks, power, and performance after warm-up. Thermal-paste replacement is advanced maintenance; follow the device maker’s service guidance.
Memory Integrity and VBS
Memory Integrity is a virtualization-based security feature enabled by default on many clean Windows 11 installations. Find it at Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory integrity. Disabling it is not a standard FPS tweak: benefits are inconsistent, while the security boundary is weakened and anti-cheat or other software may react differently. Use it only as a measured troubleshooting experiment, record the original state, and re-enable it if the difference is negligible. Do not force it off when Windows reports incompatible drivers; resolve those drivers instead. See Microsoft’s enablement guidance and technical documentation.

Storage, RAM, and firmware
Keep Windows and game drives from becoming nearly full. SSDs improve loading and asset streaming compared with hard drives; NVMe and DirectStorage help only in games that implement the technology and do not guarantee higher average FPS. Microsoft describes the requirements in its Windows 11 gaming overview. Use Optimize Drives rather than manually defragmenting SSDs.
Insufficient RAM, single-channel memory, and integrated-graphics shared-memory pressure can cause stutter. If supported and stable, enable XMP or EXPO, confirm matched dual-channel modules, and consider Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory. BIOS updates should have a clear compatibility, stability, or performance reason; failed settings can prevent booting or cause instability. Never disable Secure Boot, TPM, antivirus, or other security features as routine gaming advice.
Useful diagnostic commands
These are troubleshooting tools, not magic FPS fixes:
powercfg /getactiveschemeshows the active power scheme.winget upgradelists package updates where Windows Package Manager is supported; it is not a substitute for GPU-vendor drivers.sfc /scannowchecks protected system files.DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthrepairs the component store when Windows servicing is damaged.
Run repair commands from an elevated Terminal when appropriate, allow them to finish, and use them for suspected corruption rather than as routine optimization.

What not to do
- Do not trust guaranteed percentage gains or one-click “FPS booster” software.
- Do not run opaque debloat scripts, registry packs, or random service-disabling guides.
- Do not disable every overlay, update service, antivirus component, or security feature.
- Do not assume an SSD, DirectStorage, a newer driver, HAGS, or a power plan fixes every bottleneck.
Troubleshooting matrix
| Symptom | Likely areas to check |
|---|---|
| GPU stays near 99% and FPS is low | Resolution, ray tracing, upscaling, thermals, or GPU capability |
| GPU usage is low while one CPU thread is saturated | CPU limit, simulation, crowds, view distance, or background work |
| Good average FPS but severe hitching | Shader compilation, VRAM/RAM pressure, overlays, drivers, or storage |
| FPS falls after several minutes | Thermal throttling, power limits, charger, dust, or fan mode |
| Game uses integrated graphics | Windows Graphics preference, OEM hybrid mode, or display wiring |
| Tearing occurs | VRR, V-Sync, frame cap, cable, and monitor settings |
| Borderless or HDR behavior breaks | Windowed-game optimizations, Auto HDR, overlays, or capture software |
| A new driver causes crashes | Rollback or clean-install the previous stable driver |
Verify every change
- Use the same game build, driver, Windows power state, resolution, settings, scene, and display mode.
- Run at least two passes and record average FPS plus frame-time consistency and 1% lows.
- Keep a change only if it improves the target outcome without unacceptable latency, image-quality loss, heat, battery drain, crashes, or security reduction.
- Restore the original setting when the result is worse, and retain a rollback path for drivers and advanced changes.
