For a current PC installation, choose between GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy, then install it from the official Rockstar Store, Steam, or Epic library account that owns the game. Rockstar lists 105GB on an SSD for Enhanced and 125GB on an HDD for Legacy. Those are required installed-storage figures, not verified download-transfer sizes. Installation also requires Rockstar account authentication and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement checks.
GTA 5 file size: what you actually need
Rockstar’s current PC requirements list storage capacity by edition:

Leave additional free space for launcher files, updates, temporary installation data, and normal Windows operation. Do not assume that exactly 105GB or 125GB will be transferred during the download.
Why you may have seen “65GB”
Rockstar’s March 2024 FAQ says the old physical PC DVD release used seven discs and required 65GB on the hard drive. That is a historical disc-release figure, not the current digital requirement for Enhanced or Legacy.

GTA V Enhanced vs. Legacy system requirements
Rockstar’s requirements page, updated December 10, 2025, gives separate baselines. Enhanced needs substantially newer hardware and an SSD; Legacy runs on much older PCs.

These are publisher specifications, not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics preset. Rockstar warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements. Mobile, integrated, and AGP graphics configurations may be incompatible, and unlisted hardware is not guaranteed to work.

How to check your Windows PC before downloading
- Press Start, choose Run (or search for it), enter
dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - On the System tab, note your Windows version, processor, and installed memory.
- Open the Display tab and record the graphics device, approximate video memory, and driver version/date.
- Check the target drive’s free capacity and whether it is an SSD or HDD.
- Compare every item with the Enhanced or Legacy column you intend to install. For Enhanced, confirm that the drive is an SSD; for Legacy, confirm the 64-bit Windows requirement.
How to download and install GTA 5 on PC
1. Decide which edition to install
Use Enhanced if your PC meets its newer CPU, GPU, memory, and SSD requirements. Choose Legacy when your hardware cannot meet Enhanced’s baseline but does meet Legacy’s specifications. Verify the edition shown in the store account before starting.
2. Use the account that owns the game
Open the Rockstar Store, Steam, or Epic Games account where you purchased or claimed GTA V. Steam and Epic provide their own library installation flows, while Rockstar’s store uses Rockstar’s platform software.

3. Install or open Rockstar Games Launcher
Rockstar Games Launcher is required for sign-in and game activation. Internet access is required during authentication, and the launcher may detect an existing GTA V installation after setup. Sign in with the Rockstar account linked to your entitlement.
4. Start installation from your library
Select the game’s install option in the relevant storefront or launcher, choose a drive with enough qualifying free space, and follow the prompts. Supporting components can include Rockstar platform files, DirectX, Chromium-based launcher components, and Visual C++ components.

5. Let the process finish, then launch from the same account
Keep the launcher and storefront open until downloading, file verification, and installation complete. Start the game from that account’s library so entitlement checks can succeed. Exact button names can change between launcher versions.

- Internet is needed for Rockstar account sign-in, activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification.
- A Rockstar account is required even when the purchase was made through Steam or Epic.
- Keep Windows, graphics drivers, DirectX, and Microsoft Visual C++ components current when troubleshooting launch errors.
- Storage type matters: Enhanced specifically requires an SSD, while Legacy lists an HDD.
When installation or launch fails
Update and verify first
- Install available game, launcher, Windows, and graphics-driver updates.
- Use the storefront’s game-file verification/repair command. Steam and Epic expose this control in different library menus.
- If an error mentions D3D, DirectX, or C++, repair or reinstall the relevant DirectX and Visual C++ components.
Clean reinstall precautions
Rockstar’s clean-install guidance differs for Rockstar, Steam, and Epic installations. Follow the instructions for your storefront rather than deleting folders at random. User-data folders can contain saves, settings, and recorded videos: back up anything you need before removing them. Rockstar warns that deleted files that were not backed up cannot be recovered. Cleaning Social Club temporary files also means entering your Rockstar credentials again.
