AMD’s Gamescom 2023 announcement covered two different Radeon technologies. FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) added game-integrated frame generation to AMD’s temporal upscaling, while HYPR-RX offered a one-click Radeon Software profile for coordinating several driver features. AMD named Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum as the first FSR 3 games; their public patches arrived on September 29, 2023, rather than immediately with the August preview.
What AMD announced
FSR 3: upscaling plus generated frames
FSR 3 is the successor to FSR 2’s temporal upscaling. It retains an updated upscaling path and adds frame generation based on motion information and optical-flow processing. AMD also announced Native Anti-Aliasing, which lets a game render at native resolution while using FSR’s anti-aliasing and sharpening instead of reducing the internal resolution.
The technology was presented as open and cross-vendor, without requiring dedicated machine-learning hardware. It is licensed under the MIT license, but it still requires the game developer to integrate FSR 3; installing a Radeon driver does not add it to every game. AMD’s original announcement is documented at GPUOpen.
HYPR-RX: a convenience profile, not FSR 3
HYPR-RX was a one-click Radeon Software preset intended to coordinate features rather than introduce a new rendering algorithm. In the 2023 preview, AMD associated it with Radeon Anti-Lag+, Radeon Boost and Radeon Super Resolution. AMD’s later profile documentation also includes combinations involving Radeon Anti-Lag, RSR, FSR and Fluid Motion Frames where supported, but those later capabilities should not be read back into the August 2023 preview. See AMD’s current HYPR-RX documentation.

How FSR 3 frame generation works
- The game renders a normal frame and supplies motion data.
- FSR 3 analyzes that data together with optical-flow information.
- The algorithm creates an intermediate frame between two rendered frames.
- FSR 3’s swapchain and frame-pacing logic present rendered and generated frames to the display.
AMD described an ideal case in which 60 rendered frames could become up to 120 displayed frames per second. The additional images improve motion smoothness, but they are not additional game-simulation frames. Input response therefore does not match a native 120-FPS workload, and frame generation can add latency, particularly when the underlying frame rate is low.
What “up to 2×” really means
AMD’s “up to 2×” language refers to inserting one generated frame between existing rendered frames. It is a best-case multiplier, not a guaranteed performance increase. Results depend on the game engine, resolution, FSR quality mode, GPU and CPU limits, display refresh rate and implementation quality.
AMD’s later guidance recommends starting at about 60 FPS before interpolation and avoiding input rates below 30 FPS. A game rendering at 30 or 40 FPS may show a larger counter number with generation, but the simulation and controls remain tied to that lower rendered rate. CPU bottlenecks are not removed, and artifacts are more apparent when there are fewer source frames.
For competitive games or any title where immediate input matters more than smooth camera motion, stable rendered frames or ordinary upscaling can be preferable.

Initial hardware guidance
AMD’s August 2023 support list was broader than the hardware it recommended for a good frame-generation experience.
| Use case | AMD support | AMD recommendation | Nvidia support | Nvidia recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FSR 3 upscaling and frame generation | Radeon RX 590 and newer | Radeon RX 5000 and newer | GeForce GTX 10 Series and newer | GeForce RTX 20 Series and newer |
These were AMD’s initial 2023 guidelines, not a promise of equal results on every listed card. Actual availability also depends on the game’s graphics API and integration. AMD said FSR 3 was not limited to desktop GPUs, but laptop and handheld power limits and OEM drivers can materially change performance.
First games and the September timeline
The announcement named Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum for early fall. Their first public FSR 3 patches arrived on September 29, 2023. A developer commitment or beta mention should not be confused with a released game update.

AMD’s published performance results
The following figures came from AMD testing, not independent benchmarking. AMD used a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5-5200, Windows 11, Adrenalin 23.9.3, DirectX 12, Ultra or Ultra-High settings, and 4K or 1440p testing. The examples below are 4K results and count generated frames where enabled.
| Game and setting | FSR 3 Performance + generation | FSR 3 Performance, no generation | FSR off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forspoken (RX 7900 XTX) | 164 FPS, 55 ms | 90 FPS, 48 ms | 55 FPS, 81 ms |
| Immortals of Aveum (RX 7900 XTX) | 167 FPS, 40 ms | 107 FPS, 37 ms | 57 FPS, 72 ms |
The latency figures illustrate why displayed FPS and responsiveness must be separated. Generated frames made motion look smoother and raised the displayed count, while latency was slightly higher than with FSR upscaling alone in both AMD examples. A monitoring overlay may also combine rendered and generated frames into one number.
Anti-Lag+ and latency control
AMD said Radeon RX 7000 owners could use Anti-Lag+ in supported games alongside FSR 3. RX 6000 and older Radeon cards could use the existing Anti-Lag feature. Adrenalin 23.9.2 listed Anti-Lag+ support for Starfield, The Witcher 3, Elden Ring and Immortals of Aveum, with Windows 10 and Windows 11 support across specified Radeon desktop families. AMD’s release notes, including its selected-system “up to 45%” latency claim, are available at AMD’s 23.9.2 notes.
That claim was a selected-title, selected-system measurement rather than a universal result. Anti-Lag+ also later caused anti-cheat compatibility issues in some games, so its safety and availability depend on the particular driver and title.

Practical limits and troubleshooting
Start with enough rendered FPS
Use frame generation after achieving roughly 60 FPS when possible. It cannot repair the responsiveness of a game whose source rate is already very low.
Check whether the bottleneck is the CPU
If the processor limits simulation or draw submission, generated frames can increase the display counter without increasing the game’s underlying work.
Watch image quality and UI composition
Poor integrations can produce ghosting, flickering text, distorted HUD elements or other artifacts. Menus and overlays require special handling by the developer.
Use appropriate synchronization settings
FSR 3’s swapchain changes its pacing behavior depending on whether VSync is enabled. AMD’s technical notes advise paying attention to VSync and recommend disabling Enhanced Sync, which can interfere with FSR 3 frame pacing. Consult the game’s implementation notes rather than assuming one global setting works everywhere.

Remember that support is title-specific
FSR 3 support comes from a game patch. A compatible GPU and current driver are necessary but not sufficient, and cross-vendor support does not guarantee identical optimization on Radeon and GeForce hardware.
What changed after the preview
AMD’s software stack has expanded since 2023, and current HYPR-RX pages mention later features and frame-generation generations. Those developments do not change what AMD previewed at Gamescom: FSR 3 was a developer-integrated technology, while HYPR-RX was an automation layer. Readers evaluating a current game should check its present patch notes and the current AMD documentation rather than treating the 2023 launch list as complete.
Should you buy hardware for FSR 3?
FSR 3 itself is free and was designed for broad hardware support, so buying an AMD card is not required to try it. A GPU upgrade makes sense only when it can sustain a suitable pre-generation frame rate in the games and resolution you actually use. Compare independent benchmarks for those titles, account for VRAM and display refresh rate, and do not purchase solely on the “2×” headline.
AMD’s Radeon product range is listed at AMD.com, and Adrenalin drivers are available from AMD Support. An FSR 3-supported game remains a title-specific purchase decision; AMD’s Immortals of Aveum page is one example of official game information.
