The most common trigger is HDMI-CEC: turning on a TV, soundbar, receiver or streaming device can also start an Xbox when device control is enabled. Other common causes are Sleep-mode remote wake, Alexa or Google Assistant routines, a faulty controller, and short maintenance wakes for updates.
Use the symptom table below, then test one cause at a time so you can identify the trigger without disabling features you still want.
Start with the symptom
| What you notice | Most useful first test |
|---|---|
| Xbox starts whenever the TV starts | Disable HDMI-CEC and the option that lets other devices turn on the console. |
| It wakes after using the Xbox app or Remote Play | Switch from Sleep to Shutdown (energy saving) for a one-day test. |
| It wakes at roughly the same time overnight | Check active hours and allow for update-maintenance wakes. |
| It starts after someone speaks near a smart speaker | Review Alexa and Google Home routines and linked Xbox accounts. |
| It starts when a controller is moved | Remove controller batteries and unplug USB accessories, then reconnect them individually. |
| It starts and immediately shuts down | Check update status and perform a power-cycle test; this pattern can indicate power-management or hardware trouble. |
| It starts only when a receiver or soundbar is active | Test the complete HDMI-CEC chain with intermediate equipment disconnected. |
HDMI-CEC is the most common explanation
HDMI-CEC lets HDMI devices exchange power and input commands. If the Xbox accepts CEC commands, powering on the TV or another connected device can wake the console. Xbox added a device-control option specifically for allowing other devices to turn it on (Xbox Insider release notes).
Turn off Xbox device control
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system → Settings → General → TV & display options → Device control.
- Turn off HDMI-CEC, or disable the setting that allows other devices to turn on the console.
- Turn the TV off and on several times to verify the behavior.
TV manufacturers use different names for CEC, including Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK and Sony BRAVIA Sync. Turning CEC off on either the Xbox or TV normally stops automatic power coordination, but also removes conveniences such as automatic input switching and TV-remote control of the Xbox (Sony CEC support; Tom’s Guide).

Isolate the whole HDMI chain
An AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device or streaming box can issue or repeat CEC commands. For a clean test, connect the Xbox directly to the TV, disable CEC on both devices, and temporarily remove intermediate HDMI equipment. If the unwanted starts stop, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the sender. Xbox describes CEC communication with connected TVs and other devices in its October 2022 update notes (Xbox October 2022 update).
Sleep mode can look like a spontaneous power-on
Current Xbox software uses Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving). Microsoft renamed the former Standby mode to Sleep and Energy saver to Shutdown (energy saving) in October 2022, so instructions mentioning Instant-on, Standby or Energy saver may describe older menus (October 2022 Xbox update).

Choose the mode for your test
- Open Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Power options.
- Select Shutdown (energy saving) and observe the console for 24 hours.
Sleep keeps the Xbox connected, starts faster and supports remote wake. Shutdown (energy saving) uses substantially less power while off and does not support remote wake when fully shut down (Xbox carbon-aware console sustainability). If wake-ups stop in Shutdown (energy saving), the likely source was a remote feature, active-hours behavior or another connected service rather than a physical power switch.
Check active hours
With Sleep selected, open Settings → General → Power options → Customize power options. Xbox can keep the console available for remote wake during Active hours and fully shut it down outside them. Xbox Series X|S may schedule active hours automatically from your usage; Xbox One consoles historically defaulted to being active all the time until changed (Xbox April 2023 update). Predictable wakes that align with those hours point to connected features, not a random button press.

Remote features and smart assistants can wake it
Xbox app and Remote Play
The Xbox mobile app, Remote Play and remote game installation can wake a console in Sleep during active hours. An accidental app tap, another person signed into the account, or a scheduled smart-home routine can therefore start the Xbox without anyone touching it (Xbox April 2023 update). Use Shutdown (energy saving) as the diagnostic test described above; remote wake is unavailable when the console is fully shut down.
Alexa
Microsoft’s Xbox skill lets Alexa turn Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles on or off, launch games and apps, and control media. Review the linked Microsoft account, Alexa routines and every Alexa-enabled device in the home (Amazon Alexa Xbox Skill).

Google Assistant
After linking an Xbox in Google Home, the command “Hey Google, turn on or off <console name>” can control it. Google’s support page lists Xbox One, One S, One S All-Digital Edition and One X; Microsoft also documents the integration (Google Home Help; Xbox Google Assistant announcement). Check similarly named consoles, household members with account access, nearby speakers and Google Home routines.

A stuck or damaged Xbox button can repeatedly signal the console. To isolate it:
Best Value
- Remove batteries from every wireless controller.
- Disconnect wired controllers and all USB accessories.
- Leave the Xbox off and watch for another wake.
- Reconnect one controller or accessory at a time.
For a suspect controller, use Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app to install firmware updates and configure compatible controllers on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows (Xbox Wireless Controller update support; Xbox Wireless Controller).
Updates can cause a brief, normal wake
Xbox consoles may wake during maintenance windows to download or install system, game and app updates. Microsoft says overnight maintenance and carbon-aware scheduling can shift the timing using regional electricity data, and HDMI-CEC may then wake the TV as well (Xbox carbon-aware console sustainability).
On Xbox One, the documented setting is Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Power mode & startup → System → Updates & downloads → Keep my console up to date (Microsoft update support). A short wake followed by shutdown can be normal. If it stays on, repeatedly reboots or shows an error, check Settings → System → Updates & downloads → Latest console update status; do not assume that symptom is routine maintenance.
Quick Recap
What older troubleshooting advice gets wrong
- The current general power labels are Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving); Instant-on is a legacy Xbox One term.
- Shutdown (energy saving) lowers off-state consumption but does not prevent every overnight update wake.
- A TV can turn on an Xbox when HDMI-CEC and the relevant device-control option are enabled.
- Remote Play cannot wake a console that is completely shut down; it needs a supported connected state such as Sleep.
- Disabling CEC only on the Xbox may not be enough if a TV, receiver, soundbar or switch continues sending commands.
A practical isolation sequence
- Disable HDMI-CEC on the Xbox; if necessary disable it on the TV and intermediate HDMI devices.
- Set Power options to Shutdown (energy saving) for a day.
- Remove controller batteries and unplug USB accessories.
- Review Xbox app, Remote Play and remote-install activity, then inspect Alexa and Google Home routines and linked accounts.
- Check active hours and update status. Note whether the console wakes briefly or remains powered on.
- If it still starts with HDMI devices disconnected, controllers removed and Shutdown (energy saving) selected, the remaining pattern points away from normal remote control and toward a power-management or hardware fault; use Xbox Support for model-specific service guidance.
