“Conflict with Emulation Software Detected” is usually a legacy disc-copy-protection warning, most often from SecuROM. It generally means the game believes a virtual optical drive, mounted disc image, or disc-emulation component is active—not that you are necessarily using a console emulator or a pirated copy. Unmount images, disable emulation features, restart Windows, insert the required original disc, and install the correct official patch before trying again.
What the error means
SecuROM protected older CD-ROM and DVD-ROM games by checking characteristics of the physical disc and the computer’s optical-drive environment. If that environment resembles a virtual or altered drive, the game may refuse to launch. SecuROM describes the issue in its general FAQ.
Here, “emulation” normally means disc-drive emulation, not software such as Dolphin, PCSX2, or RPCS3 that emulates another console or computer. Related tools can create virtual CD/DVD drives, mount ISO files, burn or copy discs, or install components that change how Windows presents optical media.
- Game emulator: Recreates another platform, such as a console.
- Disc-emulation software: Creates virtual optical drives or presents an image as a disc.
- Disc-imaging software: Creates, mounts, burns, or manipulates ISO and similar files.
- Copy-protection detection: The game checks for a disc and a launch environment it considers acceptable.
The same warning has been reported with games including The Sims 2 (EA forum), SimCity Societies (Microsoft Q&A), Battlefield 2142 (Microsoft Q&A), and Crysis (AnandTech discussion). The exact cause depends on the title, expansion, edition, patch level, Windows version, and whether it is a disc or download release.

Quick fix: follow this order
- Unmount every virtual disc. In your imaging application, use the command labeled Unmount, Eject image, Remove virtual drive, Detach, or Disconnect. Labels differ between programs.
- Disable disc-emulation features. Turn off virtual-drive or emulation components, then fully exit the application. A tray icon or background service may remain active after the main window closes.
- Restart Windows. This gives virtual-drive drivers and filter components a chance to unload before the next test. Bethesda gives the same practical advice in its support article.
- Insert the correct original disc. Disc-check releases generally require the original base-game or expansion “play” disc in a local physical CD/DVD drive. SecuROM says a backup disc or mounted image may not satisfy this check (disc-check FAQ).
- Install the latest official patch for that release. Match the game, region or edition where relevant, expansion, distribution type, and existing patch level. SecuROM recommends the current official patch when detection errors persist (official procedure).
- Launch the game again. If it still fails, record the exact message and code before moving to diagnostics.
Programs that can trigger the warning
Bethesda lists Alcohol 120%, CloneCD, and Nero as historical examples of software that may conflict with disc protection. This is not a permanent or universal blacklist: detection varies by game and version, and a different application—or a leftover virtual drive—may be responsible.
I do not have an emulator installed
“No obvious emulator installed” does not prove that no conflicting component is active. Check for mounted images, virtual optical drives, disc-burning or imaging software, and applications installed in the past. A recent game patch, a false positive, a physical-drive problem, or incompatibility between legacy DRM and the current Windows release can also produce the message.

SecuROM acknowledges that detection can be incorrect and says tools do not necessarily have to be uninstalled; manual deactivation may be sufficient (SecuROM FAQ). Do not delete random drivers or registry entries. If disabling the suspected tool fails, temporarily uninstalling it, rebooting, and testing can help identify a compatibility conflict. Reinstall it later without its virtual-drive or emulation component if the installer permits.
“Wrong Volume,” “No Disc,” and related messages
Messages such as “Conflict with Disc Emulator Software detected,” “Wrong Volume in drive,” and “Original Disc Could Not Be Found or Authenticated” can involve the same disc-check system, but they are not identical errors. “Wrong Volume” may mean that the wrong disc is inserted, the correct disc is in an unexpected drive, or emulation software is interfering. Bethesda groups these cases in its troubleshooting guidance, while SecuROM documents original-disc and wrong-disc checks separately (SecuROM disc-check FAQ).

If the normal fix does not work
Verify the edition and patch
Do not apply an executable from another release. Confirm whether you have a retail disc, a digital edition, an expansion-specific launcher, or a regional build, then use the publisher’s official patch archive or support page.
Use SecuROM’s diagnostic procedure
- Insert the original play or launch disc.
- Restart without opening other applications.
- Right-click the protected shortcut or executable and choose Launch Analysis.
- Accept the disclaimer. The tool creates
AnalysisLog.sr0in the root ofC:. - Zip the file and send it with a detailed description through the instructions at SecuROM analysis support.
The diagnostic search checks common installation locations; if the game is elsewhere, select it manually as described in the diagnostic help. Obtain tools only from official SecuROM pages, and avoid posting logs publicly if they contain information you do not want to disclose.

Consider the physical drive and modern Windows
A laptop without a built-in optical drive may need a compatible physical drive, but USB DVD hardware does not work reliably with every old DRM implementation. A digital edition may use different authentication. If all emulation features are disabled and the game still fails, the issue may be obsolete disc DRM, an old driver, damaged media, or current-Windows incompatibility. Look for an official patch, publisher-supported re-release, or legitimate modern edition instead of weakening Windows security.
Legacy DLA instruction
SecuROM’s old “No disc inserted” page documents dla disable e:, where e: is the assigned drive letter (legacy instructions). This is a driver- and title-specific historical command, not a general Windows fix. Try the application’s own unmount and disable controls first.

Should you uninstall the software?
Usually, no—not initially. SecuROM says disabling emulation tools can be enough, so start by unmounting images, disabling emulation, exiting the program, rebooting, and testing. Temporary removal is reasonable only after those steps fail and you need to isolate a driver conflict. Any permanent removal should follow title-specific documentation.
Avoid unsafe “fixes”
- Do not download random “no-CD” executables, cracks, or replacement DLLs; they can contain malware, violate copyright or license terms, and break support.
- Do not use registry cleaners or delete optical-drive drivers blindly.
- Do not disable antivirus, Secure Boot, driver signing, or other core Windows protections merely to launch an old game.
- Do not assume the warning proves piracy. Legitimate owners have reported it, and SecuROM itself recognizes false detections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this message mean I have a virus?
No. The message is normally a copy-protection detection result. Malware is not established by the warning alone.
Can a mounted ISO satisfy a disc-check release?
Usually not. SecuROM’s disc-check documentation says the original disc is required for those releases.
Will removing disc-imaging software delete my save files?
Uninstalling a drive utility normally targets that utility, not game saves, but save locations vary by title. Back up saves before making major changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I use a USB DVD drive?
It may work, but compatibility is title- and hardware-specific. Check the publisher’s requirements and any official patch rather than assuming it will pass the disc check.
