How to Fix “Something Went Wrong” Errors on PS5: A Definitive Guide

“Something went wrong” is a generic PS5 message, not one fault. Match the fix to the error code or feature, starting with PSN status, network checks, and targeted troubleshooting before using Safe Mode.

“Something went wrong” is a generic message, not a single PS5 error or diagnosis. The right fix depends on what you were doing when it appeared—buying something, signing in, downloading, launching a game, or using another feature. If the screen shows an error code, note it and follow Sony’s PS5 error-code instructions first. Otherwise, start with PSN status and the relevant steps below; save Safe Mode resets for problems that actually call for them.

Start with the error code and the task that failed

Write down the exact message or code and identify what you were doing immediately beforehand. Sony documents distinct error families for network, payment, storage, licensing, application, and system-software failures, so a fix for one kind may do nothing for another.

  • Game or application: examples include CE-108255-1 and CE-108262-9.
  • Storage: CE-100028-1 indicates insufficient SSD space.
  • Application update: CE-100002-3 and CE-107938-8.
  • License: CE-109245-1 means the content license cannot be confirmed.
  • Network or system update: NW-102655-9 is an application error associated with a network connection; WS-116522-7 indicates a system-software update failed.
  • Payment: WS-113947-5 directs you to check registered payment-method information.

These examples are not interchangeable diagnoses. Use the code-specific guidance in Sony’s error-code directory when a code is present.

Try these low-risk checks first

Check PlayStation Network status

Check PlayStation Status before changing console settings. If the Store, sign-in, or another required service is unavailable or under maintenance, local troubleshooting will not resolve that server-side failure. Sony also directs users to check service status for sign-in and server-connection errors.

Restart the PS5 and test its connection

  1. Press the PS button, select Power, then Restart PS5.
  2. Open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Depending on the current Network screen layout, Sony’s update instructions also give Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
  3. If you use Wi-Fi, try Ethernet if available. Sony recommends a wired connection where possible for connection and update failures.
  4. If the problem points to the home network, turn off the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, then turn them back on.

For sign-in trouble, see Sony’s sign-in guidance; for a server-connection error, see Sony’s WS-115338-1 guidance.

If the error happens in PlayStation Store or during payment

Do not retry a payment just because the Store displayed an error. First check whether the transaction went through: on PS5, open the PlayStation Store, select the menu icon in the upper-right corner, choose Transaction History, select a date range, and open the transaction for details. A wallet-funding error does not by itself prove the purchase failed; checking history first can prevent a duplicate charge or wallet top-up. Sony’s instructions are in its transaction-history guide and wallet-funding troubleshooting.

Check the payment details and region

  • On PS5, add or review a card at Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Payment Methods > Credit/Debit Card.
  • Enter billing details as they appear on the bank statement. Sony says names or addresses containing characters such as *, hyphens, apostrophes, or slashes may fail.
  • The card’s registered country must match the PlayStation Store region. If it does not, use a supported method registered in the same region or another available payment option.
  • If Sony says payment information was updated too often, wait 24 hours before trying again. Another attempt during the block starts a new 24-hour period.

See Sony’s card setup instructions and card-problem guidance. Accepted methods differ by region; the U.S. list currently includes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Cash App Pay. Check Sony’s current accepted-methods page for your region.

If a game is locked, missing, or cannot confirm its license

License restoration is appropriate for entitlement symptoms such as a padlock icon, missing games or add-ons, or certain game crashes. It does not repair a payment authorization, PSN outage, full drive, or corrupted system update.

  • 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
  • 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
  • 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
  1. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then choose the licenses to restore.
  2. Alternatively, highlight the game on Home or in Game Library, press Options, and choose Restore License.

Sony says restoring licenses does not affect user data. If another account owns the game, that account may need to enable Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play > Enable. This feature can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. Also check that you are using the owning account and that any PlayStation Plus entitlement or catalog access is still active; parental controls or a service problem can also affect access. See Sony’s license-restoration instructions, Console Sharing and Offline Play guidance, and game-launch troubleshooting.

If a download or installation is stuck

Restart the download

  1. Press the PS button to open Control Center, then select Downloads/Uploads.
  2. Highlight the stalled download and select Pause, then Resume.
  3. If it still will not proceed, select Cancel and Delete. Find the title in Game Library and try downloading it again.

Check the connection and free space

Test the connection at Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection and check PlayStation Status. To see available console space, open Settings > Storage. To find a game’s stated minimum free-space requirement, open Game Library, select the game, choose … (more) > View Product, and check the right side of the screen. If a download remains stuck after those checks, Sony recommends Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option. Follow Sony’s download troubleshooting.

If a game or app will not launch or update

Follow the steps that fit the symptom rather than jumping directly to a reset:

  1. For a disc game, check the disc and use Sony’s disc troubleshooting.
  2. If the PS5 game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to internal console storage before playing. PS5 games installed on USB extended storage cannot be played from that drive.
  3. Restart the PS5.
  4. Restore licenses if the problem is a padlock, missing entitlement, or related access failure.
  5. Delete and redownload the affected game or app; use Ethernet if possible.
  6. Check for a PS5 system-software update.
  7. If the problem persists, use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
  8. Back up data before considering system-software reinstallation, which is a final software step rather than a routine launch fix.

For an application update error, also test the internet connection, restart the console, update system software, and reinstall the app if necessary. Sony’s detailed directions are in its game-launch guide and system and application version guide.

Check and update PS5 system software

To check for updates, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If a release is available, choose Update System Software. To check the installed version, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information; Up to date appears when the console has the latest version. Sony does not provide a fixed version number in its troubleshooting text, so use the console or its live system-software page rather than relying on a number that can become outdated.

Retry a stuck system update

  1. Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads.
  2. Highlight the system-software update and select View Error Info.
  3. Select Try Again.

Use a USB update only if the normal update fails

For an offline update, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, create the exact folder path PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP (folder and file names in uppercase), and place the update file there. Sony says the normal update file needs approximately 1.1 GB of free USB space. Start the console in Safe Mode and select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK. Use Sony’s official download and USB instructions to obtain the correct file.

Use Safe Mode for persistent software or storage problems

Enter Safe Mode

  1. Turn the PS5 off by holding its power button for three seconds.
  2. After the console shuts down, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which sounds about seven seconds after the first.
  3. Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.

Choose the option that matches the symptom

Safe Mode option What it does and when it fits Data effect
Restart PS5 Leaves Safe Mode and restarts normally. No reset.
Change Video Output Offers Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode; intended mainly for a blank-screen problem. Changes video output settings.
Repair Console Storage Repairs console storage without deleting data; intended for startup or storage problems. Does not erase data.
Update System Software Updates through direct download or a USB storage device. Updates software.
Restore Default Settings Restores default settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data. Does not delete those user items; it is not a factory reset.
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database Clear System Software Cache is intended for system-feature issues or performance drops. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database; Sony mentions system-feature problems and deleted game icons that remain on Home. These are troubleshooting options, not the data-erasing reset choices.
Reset PS5 Restores the console to its original state. Deletes all user data.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Removes the PS5 system software as part of reinstallation. Deletes all user data and removes system software.

These options and their effects are described in Sony’s Safe Mode guide. Clearing cache does not delete games and saves. Rebuilding the database is not a guaranteed fix for every generic error. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) are destructive, unlike Restore Default Settings.

Do not confuse an update file with a reinstallation file

A normal USB update uses Update System Software. A full reinstallation uses Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and deletes all PS5 data. The USB path is again PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, but Sony says the reinstallation file needs approximately 1.2 GB of free USB space. Follow the separate reinstallation instructions on Sony’s system-software page; do not select the reinstall option as an ordinary update retry.

Fixes that are not universal answers

  • Changing DNS to Google or Cloudflare: Sony does not prescribe this as a general fix for the generic message. Its standard network guidance is to test the connection, review network settings, restart networking equipment, try wired networking where possible, and seek support if the issue remains.
  • Disabling IPv6: Sony does not list this as a general solution. It should not be treated as a standard step without a specific router or error condition.
  • Repeated license restoration: this will not repair payment authorization, PSN availability, insufficient storage, or a system-update failure.
  • Immediate factory reset: unnecessary for many Store, account, download, and game-specific problems, and the reset choices erase user data.
  • Assuming cache corruption: the same message can reflect a server outage, account or license issue, payment problem, network failure, low storage, application-data error, or system-software failure.

When to contact PlayStation Support or arrange repair

Contact PlayStation Support if the error persists after the relevant non-destructive steps, or if the code-specific Sony guidance calls for support. Provide the exact message or code, the operation that triggered it, detailed steps to reproduce it, the date and time, and a screenshot or video if possible. Sony’s PS5 support page directs users to PlayStation Repairs diagnostics when software and standard troubleshooting do not resolve the fault.
