Why the trickier words fit

STRAND and BANK

Strand can mean a thread, but here it uses its shoreline meaning. Bank may first suggest money; in this set it means land beside the water.

PIP

Pip can mean a fruit seed, yet this puzzle points to the Pips associated with Gladys Knight.

CONNECTION

The word looks like a reference to the game itself, but it belongs with CHEMISTRY, FIREWORKS and SPARK as a description of romantic compatibility.

The band-name connections

The purple answers reference Siouxsie and the Banshees, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Bob Marley and the Wailers.

A practical solving order

  1. Start with the tightest semantic set: CARPET, LAMINATE, TILE and WOOD are all flooring materials or types.
  2. Next isolate BANK, COAST, SHORE and STRAND as geographic terms for a coastal area.
  3. With those removed, CHEMISTRY, CONNECTION, FIREWORKS and SPARK form the romantic-feeling group.
  4. The remaining BANSHEE, HEARTBREAKER, PIP and WAILER resolve as backing-band names.
  5. If a pairing seems too obvious, shuffle the grid. Connections deliberately exploits alternate meanings and visual pairings.
