Verdict: The Logitech G815 remains unusually responsive and feature-rich, with a full-size layout, five dedicated macro keys, per-key RGB, media controls and USB passthrough. Its wired design and proprietary low-profile switches are also its limits. In 2026, buy it only at a substantial discount or when those dedicated macros and passthrough are essential; newer keyboards generally offer better keycaps, connectivity or repairability.
What is the Logitech G815?
The G815 is a full-size, wired mechanical gaming keyboard introduced in 2019. It uses Logitech’s low-profile GL switches, per-key LIGHTSYNC RGB, a dedicated media-control cluster, a volume roller, Gaming Mode, five left-side G-keys and a USB 2.0 passthrough. Its slim aluminum top gives it a distinctive, laptop-like profile.
Logitech launched it with a suggested retail price of $199.99 in August 2019; that is historical MSRP, not a current price recommendation. See the original Logitech announcement. Current stock, condition, regional layout and warranty vary, so check the exact retailer listing before buying.

How good is it for gaming?
Independent testing by RTINGS found excellent gaming performance and very low input latency. The short travel and low actuation force feel quick in fast games, while the wired connection avoids battery management and wireless interference.

That responsiveness means consistent signal timing, not an automatic improvement in aim or reaction time. The five G-keys are particularly useful for MMO abilities, streaming controls and editing shortcuts. They are less useful for a typical FPS player and make the keyboard wider than a tenkeyless model. Because the macro column sits beside Ctrl, Shift, Tab and Escape, expect an adjustment period and occasional G-key mispresses.
GL switch options: choose carefully
Listings often omit the switch variant. Confirm the exact switch, layout and condition before ordering. RTINGS tested the GL Tactile version; its conclusions about feel and sound should not be treated as identical to the other variants.

Logitech describes GL switches as about half the height of conventional mechanical switches and claims 25% faster actuation than a conventional 2.0 mm actuation point. That is Logitech’s comparison, not a universal independently demonstrated advantage; latency testing is the more useful performance evidence.
Typing experience and ergonomics
The low profile keeps your hands closer to the desk and can be comfortable without a wrist rest. Short travel gives keystrokes a fast, laptop-like character, and the tactile version is quieter than a conventional clicky board.

Typing quality is not exceptional, however. RTINGS reported key wobble and rated the unusual key shape and low-profile design as an adjustment for some users. The short stroke can feel abrupt if you prefer the cushioned travel of standard mechanical switches. Clicky units are a poor choice for shared rooms or quiet offices. Keycap spacing and shape also limit compatibility with the much broader standard MX aftermarket ecosystem.
Build quality and long-term ownership
The slim aluminum styling looks premium, but appearance and structural execution are different questions. Independent testing found loose-feeling keycaps and a slight bend in the tested board. Treat that as a reported sample-level quality-control risk: inspect a new unit during its return window rather than assuming every G815 is bent.
The board is not hot-swappable. GL switches are proprietary low-profile parts, so replacing a failed switch, changing the feel or finding compatible third-party keycaps is harder than with a standard enthusiast keyboard. RTINGS also notes that keycaps can become shiny or slippery with extended use compared with newer G915 X models.
Logitech’s current G815 support page lists no downloads, FAQs, documents or spare parts. That does not prove G HUB cannot configure an existing keyboard, but it makes long-term recovery and official parts support less reassuring. Warranty coverage depends on region, seller and whether the unit is new, open-box or refurbished.

LIGHTSYNC, G HUB and macro controls
G HUB provides per-key color assignment, preset effects, custom animations, game or application profiles, G-key assignments and profile switching. LIGHTSYNC supports approximately 16.8 million colors according to Logitech.
Onboard macro recording
Logitech’s setup guide documents this sequence:
- Press MR.
- Press the desired G-key.
- Type the key sequence.
- Press MR again to stop recording.
- For another layer, press M2 or M3 before repeating the process.
Five G-keys across M1, M2 and M3 provide up to 15 G-key functions per profile or game. The detailed procedure appears in Logitech’s G815 setup guide and support guide. These features are most valuable for MMO players, streamers and creators; they are unnecessary bulk if you will never use macros.
RTINGS reports configuration software support for Windows and macOS, but feature behavior and profile handling should be checked against Logitech’s current G HUB support for your operating system rather than assumed to be identical.
USB passthrough: useful, but not a modern hub
The G815 has a USB 2.0 passthrough port for a mouse, flash drive, phone charging or another low-power peripheral. Logitech states that its passthrough cable must be connected to its own computer USB input to provide full power. In practice, one plug handles the keyboard and a second plug feeds the passthrough.

That consumes an additional USB port and adds cable clutter. It should not be treated as a high-speed USB hub without explicit documentation. It is nevertheless a genuine advantage over the wireless G915, which does not provide this passthrough according to RTINGS.
Wired-only connectivity
The G815 has no Bluetooth, wireless mode or multi-device pairing. That rules it out for tablet use, living-room setups and desks that switch between a PC and mobile devices. A permanently tethered cable is an advantage only if you value uninterrupted wired operation more than flexibility.

RTINGS describes the G815 and G915 as near-identical apart from connectivity and related features. The G915 X is the closer modern Logitech alternative, but confirm its exact connection, layout and switch options before comparing prices. Logitech’s product family is at Logitech G.
Alternatives worth considering
Logitech G915 LIGHTSPEED
Choose it if wireless and Bluetooth matter more than USB passthrough. It retains the general low-profile GL concept and dedicated macro column.

Logitech G915 X
Choose it for newer construction, PBT keycaps, improved rigidity and more flexible macro assignment, provided the model’s price and connectivity suit you.
SteelSeries Apex Pro
The Apex Pro is a different, generally higher-end concept with adjustable actuation, broader programmability, a magnetic wrist rest and an OLED display. RTINGS considers it slightly better for gaming and better built, while the G815 retains the dedicated MMO-style macro-column advantage. See SteelSeries.
Keychron low-profile keyboards
Keychron models are worth examining when wireless operation, QMK/VIA-style remapping or enthusiast customization matter more than Logitech’s G HUB and five-key macro column. Dedicated macro-column functionality may be weaker or absent. See Keychron.

Who should buy the G815?
- Buy it when you specifically need a wired full-size board, five dedicated G-keys, low-profile keys and USB passthrough.
- Choose the switch variant deliberately: tactile for a quieter bump, linear for smooth presses, or clicky only when loud feedback is welcome.
- Confirm the exact listing’s switch, regional layout, color, condition, warranty and return policy.
- Check that your computer has two available USB ports if you plan to use passthrough.
Who should skip it?
- Skip it if you need wireless, Bluetooth or multi-device support.
- Skip it if hot-swap switches, standard keycaps or easy repair are priorities.
- Skip it if a compact or TKL footprint is preferable, or if the left macro column will interfere with your normal key positions.
- Skip the clicky version for quiet shared spaces.
- Do not pay near the original premium MSRP unless the macro column and passthrough are genuinely indispensable.
Final verdict
The G815 is still fast, distinctive and practical for a narrow audience. Its low-profile switches, excellent tested latency, dedicated macro layers, per-key RGB and passthrough remain compelling. But it is a 2019, wired-only platform with proprietary parts, reported key wobble and flex, and limited current model-specific support.
That makes the buying decision price-sensitive: it is a strong buy at a deep discount, a conditional buy at midrange pricing, and a skip at modern premium-keyboard pricing unless its five macro keys and USB passthrough solve a specific need.
