This spoiler-aware walkthrough explains that opening progression, what each ability enables, how to approach Shrines, and how to recover when you are stuck.
Start here: Great Sky Island
The official beginner guidance uses Great Sky Island to introduce the game’s basic progression. Treat the opening area as a training route rather than a checklist to rush through: each Shrine gives you a safe place to learn a new interaction and test it immediately in the surrounding environment.
- Follow the current objective. When the game points you toward a Shrine or another task, use that marker as your next practical goal. The opening is designed to teach movement, environmental problem-solving, and ability use in stages.
- Complete the early Shrines you encounter. Early Shrine progression is how the game introduces and practices Link’s four prominently featured abilities: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall.
- Repeat the ability outside the Shrine. After learning an ability, look for an obvious nearby object, surface, or moving element that lets you try it again. This turns a tutorial prompt into a tool you can recognize later.
- Use experimentation as part of the route. If a construction or traversal idea seems possible, try it. The game’s official guidance emphasizes exploration and experimentation instead of one mandatory solution.
Link’s four new abilities
Ultrahand: join objects and build solutions
Ultrahand joins objects together. Its main purpose is construction, but it is equally important for environmental puzzles: inspect the items around a problem, combine them, and see whether the resulting structure changes how you can cross or manipulate the area.
- Look for loose objects near a gap, obstacle, or puzzle mechanism.
- Attach pieces rather than assuming the intended answer is a single item.
- If the first arrangement fails, change the shape or orientation and try again.
Fuse: change a weapon, shield, or arrow’s utility
Fuse attaches an object to a weapon, shield, or arrow. The attachment can alter the item’s utility and strength, so ordinary-looking materials may become useful when paired with the right equipment.
#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
- Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
- Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
- Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.
- When a weapon feels ineffective, look for a nearby object that can be attached.
- Use the ability on shields and arrows as well as weapons; each attachment can support a different approach.
- Experiment with available materials instead of saving every possible combination for later.
Ascend: pass through a solid surface above you
Ascend lets Link pass through a solid surface above him. It can replace a long climb or change which route is practical, so check overhead whenever a room, ledge, or structure seems to have a reachable ceiling.
- Look up before committing to a longer route around an obstacle.
- Consider ceilings and overhangs as possible entrances, not just barriers.
- If the surface above is not useful, return to ordinary movement and reassess the surrounding space.
Recall: reverse an object’s movement
Recall reverses an object’s movement. Moving platforms, thrown objects, and other motion-based clues can therefore become routes or puzzle tools when you send them back along their previous path.
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
- Watch an object’s movement before activating the ability.
- Use the observed path as the clue; Recall works best when you understand what the object just did.
- If the reversal does not solve the problem, combine the result with another ability or reposition yourself.
How to approach Shrines
Use each Shrine as a lesson, not just a reward
Nintendo’s beginner guide presents early Shrine progression as a way to acquire and practice abilities. Pay attention to the first object or movement the Shrine places in front of you: it often demonstrates the interaction the rest of the room expects.
When a Shrine solution is not obvious
- Identify what has changed since entering: a loose object, a gap, a high surface, or something moving.
- Match the clue to an ability. Construction suggests Ultrahand; an item that could modify equipment suggests Fuse; an overhead route suggests Ascend; and a motion pattern suggests Recall.
- Try a small version of the idea before building a complicated solution.
- If the room still does not make sense, leave the immediate puzzle mentally, inspect the full space, and test a different interaction.
Finding more Shrines
There is no need to force a single route through the world. Search areas you have not visited, follow visible points of interest, and return to places where a newly learned ability changes what you can reach. Exploration itself is part of the progression loop.

What to do after the opening
Once your current objective takes you beyond the introductory lessons, use a simple decision loop:
- Read the active objective. Let it establish the immediate destination or problem rather than wandering without a question in mind.
- Check nearby unexplored space. An unvisited area may contain the clue, Shrine, character, or material that makes the next step clearer.
- Talk to characters you meet. Conversation can provide context or point you toward a next action when the environment alone is ambiguous.
- Re-test your abilities. Try Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall in combinations suggested by the objects around you, including Zonai devices.
- Change direction when necessary. If a route is unclear or a puzzle is demanding equipment you do not yet have, pursue another objective and return later.
Quest dependencies worth knowing
Some progression is conditional, so an apparently missing quest is not always a bug. One documented example is A Mystery in the Depths: it does not unlock until you have completed Josha’s Camera Work in the Depths main quest and at least one Regional Phenomena area. This is a specific dependency, not a rule that applies to every quest.

- In addition to the standard version, a collector's edition of the game will launch on May 12th and includes:
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (physical copy)
- 204 page Hard Cover Artbook
- SteelBook case, Steel Poster, Set of four pin badges
If a quest is not appearing
- Check whether an earlier named quest is unfinished.
- Look for a required regional objective rather than repeatedly searching the same location.
- Speak with the relevant characters again after completing the prerequisite.
When you are stuck
Nintendo Support’s general advice is:
“If you’re not sure how to proceed, try searching areas you haven’t visited, experimenting with Link’s abilities and Zonai devices in new ways, and talking to characters you meet.”
Turn that advice into the following troubleshooting branches:

You cannot find the next objective
- Review the active objective and search beyond the last area you thoroughly checked.
- Visit characters near the objective or in recently reached settlements.
- Look for an unexplored route rather than assuming the last visible path is the intended one.
You can see a route but cannot reach it
- Check overhead for an Ascend route.
- Inspect nearby loose pieces for an Ultrahand construction.
- Watch moving objects and consider whether Recall can reverse their path.
Your equipment is not handling the problem
- Use Fuse on a weapon, shield, or arrow with an available object.
- Try a different attachment or approach instead of repeating the same attack.
- Use the environment and Zonai devices to create an alternative solution.
A quest still will not progress
- Check for a prerequisite, using A Mystery in the Depths as a concrete example of conditional unlocking.
- Complete another objective, then return and speak to the relevant character again.
