Why each group works
Yellow: Block as in an opening
To close, plug, seal, or stop an opening is to block it. “Stop” can be the least specific-looking option, but it fits the category in the sense of stopping an opening or passage.

Purple: Words after I
Place “I” before each word to form a familiar phrase, title, or name: I-beam, I Ching, I, Robot, and I Spy. This is the grid’s most phrase-based connection.
A practical way to solve this grid
- Start with the concrete blocking verbs. CLOSE, PLUG, SEAL, and STOP share a direct physical meaning, making the yellow group the clearest entry point.
- Look for announcement verbs. DELIVER, GIVE, PRESENT, and PRONOUNCE all work when something is formally put forward or stated.
- Classify the remaining language terms. BODY, PROGRAMMING, SIGN, and SPOKEN pair naturally with “language.”
- Use the leftovers for the wordplay group. BEAM, CHING, ROBOT, and SPY become recognizable expressions when preceded by “I.”
If the grid feels ambiguous, shuffle the words before making another guess. All Things How recommends leaving the more conceptual and phrase-based groups until the easier synonym-like groups have been removed; that is practical advice, not a stated official NYT method.
