The console contains the optical drive, heat sink, motherboard and wireless hardware; the GamePad is a substantial second assembly with its own screen, controls, camera, motion sensors, NFC hardware and rechargeable battery.
These observations describe the units iFixit examined, not every regional model or later hardware revision. The teardown is an overview rather than a repair procedure, so use the task-specific guide for the fault you are addressing.
What the teardown covers
iFixit opened the Wii U console and the separate GamePad controller. The two devices communicate wirelessly, but they are not one repair assembly: each has its own enclosure, circuit boards, fasteners and replaceable parts. Kyle Wiens, iFixit’s CEO, summarized the result: “Aside from the use of Tri-wing screws on both the console and the GamePad controller, the two devices impressed us with their repairability and modularity.”
iFixit gave the Wii U an 8 out of 10 repairability score in 2012. That is iFixit’s editorial assessment from that teardown, not a current industry-standard rating or a guarantee that replacement parts remain available.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Tools and hidden fasteners
Both units hide screws beneath stickers and around enclosure edges. The console outer-case guide describes Phillips and Tri-wing screws, including fasteners at the rear edge. iFixit’s repair catalog lists Phillips #0, #00 and #1 drivers alongside Tri-point Y0 and Y1 drivers. “Tri-wing” and “Tri-point” are often used interchangeably in listings, but the profile and size still must match the screw.
- Use a precision driver set containing the exact Phillips and Tri-point/Tri-wing sizes called for by the specific guide.
- Use a plastic spudger for clips and seam separation, and tweezers for small connectors and screws.
- Do not assume one bit fits every fastener, and do not force a driver into a nearly stripped head.
- A heat gun appears in iFixit’s broader tool catalog for some procedures; it is not required for every Wii U opening.
Opening the case is only the first step. Before ordering a component, identify whether the fault is in the console or GamePad, confirm the model and revision, and follow the guide for that exact part.
Console teardown: the major assemblies
Outer case and modular layout
Once the hidden screws are removed, the console separates into assemblies joined largely with screws and connectors rather than extensive adhesive. iFixit’s catalog breaks out guides for the outer case, DVD drive, fan, motherboard, heat sink, wireless modules and console battery. That modular layout can make a single failed assembly a more realistic repair target than replacing the whole console.

- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
Optical drive
The optical drive is one of the console’s largest internal components. iFixit measured the drive at 424.2 grams, nearly one-third of the teardown’s approximately 1.5-kilogram console measurement. Those are iFixit’s 2012 teardown measurements, not a specification for every revision. The drive is a distinct serviceable assembly, relevant when discs fail to load, spin or read.

Heat sink, fan and motherboard
The drive sits alongside the cooling hardware. The heat sink and fan are separately identified repair assemblies, while the motherboard carries the main processing, memory, storage and connectivity electronics. The teardown identifies an IBM Power-based multicore processor and an AMD Radeon-based HD GPU, but it does not establish processor clock rates or a universal core count.
Wireless modules and identified chips
iFixit found three separate wireless modules on the underside of the motherboard:
Rank #3
- Broadcom BCM43237KMLG
- Broadcom BCM43362KUB6
- Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 3.0
The teardown also identifies a Panasonic HDMI controller, Samsung eMMC storage, Micron DDR3L memory and Samsung NAND flash. These are observations from the examined board; component substitutions in another regional or later-revised unit are possible.
Storage and console models
The teardown material describes internal storage capacities of 8 GB and 32 GB, with external USB storage support. iFixit’s repair catalog labels the corresponding models as an 8 GB white Basic console and a 32 GB black Deluxe console.

Do not use storage capacity or color alone to identify a replacement motherboard, drive or wireless board. Confirm the console’s regional model and board revision first.

GamePad teardown: a second computer-like assembly
Screen and front hardware
iFixit describes a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen with 854 × 480-pixel resolution. The GamePad also contains motion-control hardware, a front-facing camera and NFC functionality. Its screen, digitizer and control electronics make it substantially more complex than a passive controller.
Controls and circuit boards
The teardown separates the controls, buttons, ports and internal circuitry into accessible assemblies. This modular construction is why a fault such as a worn button, damaged port or failed screen can sometimes be addressed at the part level rather than by replacing the entire GamePad. The correct procedure depends on the symptom and the exact revision.
Battery compartment
The rechargeable GamePad battery sits behind an accessible battery compartment, making battery replacement a distinct job from opening the console. A replacement battery listing is not automatically compatible: check the GamePad model, connector and revision before buying.
Best Value
Do not confuse the two batteries
GamePad rechargeable battery
This battery powers the wireless controller and is a replaceable GamePad part. It is unrelated to the small cell battery inside the console.
Console clock cell
Nintendo says the console cell battery should be removed only when replacement is necessary, because the console clock stops working when the cell is removed. Treat that guidance as separate from GamePad battery work; replacing the GamePad battery does not address a console clock problem.
Choosing a repair path
- Identify the device. Decide whether the symptom belongs to the console, GamePad or their wireless link.
- Match the symptom to an assembly. Disc-reading faults point toward the optical drive; overheating or fan noise toward cooling; display or touch faults toward the GamePad screen assembly; button or port problems toward the corresponding control or port assembly.
- Confirm model and revision. Check Basic versus Deluxe, regional model information and board or part revision before ordering.
- Gather only the required tools. Use the guide’s specified Phillips or Tri-point/Tri-wing size, plus a spudger or tweezers where required.
- Follow the part-specific procedure. The teardown shows layout and modularity, but it is not itself a repair guide.
iFixit’s catalog includes guides for the console’s outer case, DVD drive, fan, motherboard, heat sink, wireless modules and console battery, and directs GamePad work to a separate GamePad device page. Parts that may be relevant include a GamePad battery, optical drive, fan, buttons, ports, screen or wireless module. A marketplace listing is not proof of fit or quality.
Does Nintendo still repair Wii U hardware?
Nintendo Support currently says it no longer accepts service requests for the Wii U console, GamePad or accessories. That makes the teardown and task-specific repair documentation useful for owners considering self-repair or an independent technician, but it does not establish the quality, safety or availability of any particular third-party replacement part.

Quick Recap
What the teardown can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: where major assemblies sit, which fastener families are used, how modular the console and GamePad are, and which chips iFixit identified on the examined motherboard.
- It cannot show: that every regional or later-revised Wii U uses identical components, that a listed replacement part will fit, or that a particular repair will solve an unverified fault.
- It is not a repair guarantee: damage to connectors, stripped screws or incorrect parts can create additional problems, so stop if the procedure or component does not match the device.
