Why this puzzle was tricky

Connections #500 made every category look structurally identical: each answer is a familiar phrase formed by putting a color before the word. That shared pattern can make the board harder because a word may seem compatible with several colors before the phrase becomes clear.

The purple set is the most wordplay-heavy group. “Purple prose” is a style of writing, while purple haze, purple heart and purple rain are established phrases or names. The color-prefix gimmick also marks this as the 500th regular Connections game, excluding the Sports Edition, as reported by Forbes.

How NYT Connections works

Connections presents 16 words that must be sorted into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally easiest and purple generally hardest. Four incorrect guesses end the game. You can play through the New York Times website or the NYT Games app; Forbes described these rules and access points in its 2024 coverage.
