Short answer: The Radeon RX 6700 XT remains a capable 1440p rasterization card, with 12GB of VRAM and a 230W board rating. Its weaknesses are ray-tracing performance, the age of its 2021 benchmark data, and uncertainty over present-day price and condition. Treat launch reviews as historical context, then check the exact board model and current listing before buying.
What the RX 6700 XT is
AMD designed the RX 6700 XT as a 1440p desktop graphics card. AMD’s current specification page lists 40 compute units, 12GB of GDDR6, a 2424MHz game frequency, 96MB of Infinity Cache, a 192-bit memory interface and up to 384GB/s of memory bandwidth. These are published characteristics of the reference specification; partner cards can use different clocks, coolers, dimensions and power limits. See AMD’s RX 6700 XT specifications.
| Specification | AMD-published value |
|---|---|
| Compute units | 40 |
| Memory | 12GB GDDR6 |
| Game frequency | 2424MHz |
| Infinity Cache | 96MB |
| Memory interface | 192-bit |
| Memory bandwidth | Up to 384GB/s |
| Typical board power | 230W |
| AMD minimum PSU recommendation | 650W |
| Reference auxiliary power | One 8-pin and one 6-pin connector |
| Reference length | 267mm |
Check the label and manufacturer page for the specific add-in-board card. A factory-overclocked triple-fan model may be longer, thicker, louder or fitted with different connectors than AMD’s reference design.
How good is the RX 6700 XT at 1440p?
In Tom’s Hardware’s March 17, 2021 review, the RX 6700 XT averaged 131 frames per second at 1080p ultra across its rasterized test suite. It was about 7% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and 1% slower than the RTX 3070 in that test set; the suite excluded games using DirectX Raytracing. Tom’s Hardware also measured it as 26% faster than the RX 5700 XT. Those figures describe launch-era hardware, drivers and games, not current performance. - Next‑Gen AMD RDNA 4 Architecture: Powered by the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU with 32 Compute Units featuring 3rd Gen Ray Tracing and 2nd Gen AI Accelerators, delivering exceptional 1440p gaming and AI‑enhanced performance.
- Blazing‑Fast Engine Clock: Delivers a boost clock of up to 3290 MHz and a game clock of 2700 MHz out of the box, providing the raw power for smooth, high‑framerate gameplay.
- 16GB GDDR6 Memory on 128‑Bit Bus: Equipped with 16GB of high‑speed GDDR6 memory running at 20 Gbps, offering ample capacity and bandwidth for modern game textures and creative applications.
Tom’s review identified 1440p as the card’s sweet spot. In practical terms, it is best suited to high settings at 2560×1440, with the exact frame rate determined by the game, quality preset, processor, driver and use of features such as upscaling. The 12GB framebuffer can also be useful in texture-heavy games, although capacity alone does not guarantee a fixed performance level.
Can the RX 6700 XT run ray tracing?
Yes, but ray tracing is the card’s clearest launch-era weakness. In the review’s Watch Dogs Legion test at ultra settings with DXR enabled, the RX 6700 XT produced 35fps, compared with 52fps for the RTX 3060 Ti. The RTX 3060 Ti reached 70fps when DLSS was set to Quality. This is one game and one test configuration, so it should not be treated as a universal ranking for every ray-traced title.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
If ray tracing is central to your games, compare current reviews for the exact titles you play and account for each platform’s upscaling options. If you mostly play traditionally rasterized games, the launch evidence presents a much stronger case for the 6700 XT.
RX 6700 XT versus RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070 and RX 5700 XT
| Comparison | What the cited launch review established | How to use that information now |
|---|---|---|
| RX 6700 XT vs RTX 3060 Ti | About 7% faster at 1080p ultra in Tom’s rasterized suite; 35fps vs 52fps in Watch Dogs Legion DXR ultra. | Choose based on current price, ray-tracing needs, upscaling support, VRAM and exact board condition. |
| RX 6700 XT vs RTX 3070 | About 1% slower at 1080p ultra in that rasterized suite. | Do not infer today’s value without current prices and newer testing. |
| RX 6700 XT vs RX 5700 XT | 26% faster in Tom’s Hardware’s review comparison. | Useful as a generational launch comparison, not a current benchmark guarantee. |
Tom’s Hardware also found the reviewed Sapphire factory-overclocked card averaged 6% ahead of the reviewed Gigabyte factory-overclocked card. That difference applies only to those cards and that test suite; it is not a universal ranking of every Sapphire or Gigabyte model.

What power supply and case do you need?
AMD specifies a 230W typical board power and recommends a minimum 650W power supply for the reference specification. The reference card uses one 8-pin plus one 6-pin connector and is listed at 267mm long. Use those figures as a starting point, then verify the partner card’s manual because board length, thickness, connector arrangement and recommended PSU can differ.
- Measure available GPU length, including front fans, radiator space and any drive cages.
- Confirm that the PSU has the required separate PCIe power leads and adequate continuous wattage.
- Leave room for airflow around a two- or three-slot cooler.
- Check the exact model number rather than relying on “RX 6700 XT” alone.
Is the RX 6700 XT still worth buying?
There is no reliable current price or stock figure in the cited material, so a present-day value verdict cannot be made from the 2021 launch review alone. AMD’s official launch price was $479, as reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2021; that is historical pricing, not a current recommendation.

For a used or refurbished card, assess the complete listing:
- Current asking price compared with newer GPUs available in your region.
- Exact cooler and factory-overclock model, dimensions and connector requirements.
- Seller reputation, return window and remaining warranty.
- Evidence that the card operates normally under load and has not suffered excessive heat, fan wear or mining-related deterioration.
- Whether your games prioritize rasterization, ray tracing or a particular upscaling ecosystem.
Buy only after checking those details. A well-priced, clean 6700 XT can still make sense for 1440p rasterized gaming; an expensive or poorly documented example is harder to justify against newer alternatives.

What launch reviewers concluded
Tom’s Hardware’s March 2021 verdict was that the card delivered good performance and that its official price looked reasonable, while warning that launch demand could exceed supply. That conclusion belongs to the 2021 market. AMD’s launch announcement described the product as delivering “Exceptional 1440p PC Gaming Experiences,” which is manufacturer positioning rather than an independent test result; the announcement is available at AMD’s launch release.
