The appointment ended SIE’s previous split top-leadership arrangement. Hermen Hulst stayed on as CEO of the Studio Business Group and reports to Nishino, creating one overall SIE chief with a separate executive for first-party games and publishing.
Who is Hideaki Nishino?
Nishino is a long-time PlayStation technology and platform executive. Before taking the top SIE job, he led the Platform Business Group, whose remit included technology, products, services and the user experience across PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Network.
Sony announced that Platform Business Group appointment on May 14, 2024, with an effective date of June 1, 2024. That background places Nishino closest to the systems and services that connect players to PlayStation, rather than primarily to individual game studios.
In Sony’s January 29, 2025 announcement, Nishino said: “I am truly honored to take the helm at Sony Interactive Entertainment.” He identified technology and creativity as core strengths and described continued PlayStation community growth, IP expansion and technology innovation as strategic priorities.

When did Nishino become PlayStation CEO?
Sony Group Corporation and Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the change on January 29, 2025. Nishino’s appointment took effect on April 1, 2025. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s own corporate timeline records the same date for his appointment as President & CEO.
What changed in SIE’s leadership structure?
The important change was consolidation. SIE moved to a single President and CEO, while retaining a dedicated leader for the studio business. This replaced the prior split arrangement in which platform operations and studio operations had separate top executives.

| Area | Hideaki Nishino | Hermen Hulst |
|---|---|---|
| Company role | President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment | CEO of the Studio Business Group |
| Primary responsibility | Overall SIE leadership; platform technology, products, services and user experience | First-party game development, publishing and studio-business operations |
| Reporting relationship | Top executive for SIE | Reports to Nishino |
| Relevant experience at the time of the change | CEO of the Platform Business Group from June 1, 2024 | Continued in the studio-business leadership role |
In practical terms, platform and technology execution now sits under the same SIE chief who oversees the wider business, while game development and publishing remain under Hulst’s specialist leadership. Sony’s announcement describes responsibilities and reporting lines; it does not announce a particular console, game, release schedule or policy change resulting from the appointment.
What does the PlayStation CEO control?
Nishino’s SIE remit is broader than his previous platform role. As President and CEO, he leads the PlayStation company overall. His established area of responsibility includes the following:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- Platform technology: the technical foundation supporting PlayStation hardware and services.
- Products: PlayStation products, including the platform experience around devices such as PS5 and PS VR2.
- Services and network experience: the online services and user experience associated with PlayStation Network.
- Company-wide direction: coordinating SIE’s platform, studio and business operations through one top-level executive.
Hulst remains responsible for first-party development, publishing and the Studio Business Group’s business operations. That division of labor means “PlayStation CEO” does not mean Nishino personally runs every studio; he leads SIE, with the studio business operating under Hulst within that structure.
What are Nishino’s stated priorities?
Technology and creativity
Sony’s appointment release presents technology and creativity as complementary strengths. Nishino’s prior platform remit supplies the technology focus, while SIE’s studio organization supplies game development and other creative work.

Growing the PlayStation community
The stated strategy includes expanding and engaging the PlayStation community. The announcement does not attach a new numerical target or a specific product program to that goal.
Expanding Sony’s intellectual property
Sony also cites IP expansion as an approach to community growth. “IP expansion” is a strategic theme, not a promise that a named franchise, adaptation or release will follow from the appointment.

What changed after the previous PlayStation leadership arrangement?
The clearest change is governance rather than a published product outcome: one SIE CEO now sits above both the platform side and the studio-business side. Hulst’s continued role preserves dedicated first-party content leadership, but his reporting line now runs to Nishino. Sony has not said that the appointment guarantees new hardware, games, pricing, services or release dates.
What the appointment does—and does not—tell players
- Established: Nishino has overall SIE leadership from April 1, 2025, with a background in platform technology and services.
- Established: Hulst continues to lead first-party development and publishing through the Studio Business Group and reports to Nishino.
- Established: Sony’s stated themes are technology, creativity, community growth and IP expansion.
- Not established by the announcement: a specific game slate, console launch, accessory, subscription change, price move or policy change.
Those distinctions matter because an executive appointment sets accountability and priorities; it is not, by itself, a product roadmap.
