CurseForge can fail at several different points: the website may not open the app, the app may be unable to retrieve a pack or one of its files, installation may be blocked by storage or folder permissions, or a successfully installed pack may fail at launch. First try a second modpack. If that works, focus on the original pack’s version, loader, and available files; if several packs fail, check the app, network, and installation folder.
Identify where the failure happens
“Download” can describe a few separate stages: clicking Install on the website, transferring files in the CurseForge app, building the Minecraft profile, or launching the finished pack. The fix depends on which stage stops.

Try installing a second, unrelated pack. If it works, the first pack’s file, Minecraft version, or modloader is a more likely cause than a general outage. If multiple packs fail, check CurseForge’s official announcements or support channels before concluding that the service is down. A working website or normal speed test does not prove the app can reach every download endpoint.
Try the safest fixes first
Restart the app and test another pack
- Exit CurseForge completely. On Windows, open Task Manager and end any remaining CurseForge or Overwolf processes.
- Open CurseForge directly, rather than clicking the website’s Install button, and try a different pack.
- If only one pack fails, continue with its version, loader, and file availability. If all packs fail, continue with the app, storage, folder, and network checks below.
Check the pack’s Minecraft version and loader
Open the pack’s file list and confirm the selected file targets the Minecraft version you intend to use. Check its loader as well: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla profiles are supported, but the loader families are not interchangeable. A pack for Fabric cannot simply be installed as Forge, for example. CurseForge’s file listings associate files with game versions and loaders; an incompatible tag can block installation even where a combination might work in some circumstances. Choose a file that matches the pack’s stated requirements, or try an earlier compatible pack file rather than forcing an arbitrary loader version. Also confirm that you are selecting a modpack, not an individual mod. Individual mods may have their own Minecraft-version and loader requirements and are not installed as complete profiles.
Check free space and the modding folder
CurseForge’s error-message guidance says an installation may require at least 10 GB of free space. Treat that as the threshold associated with the app’s error guidance, not as the exact size of every pack. The download, extracted files, loader files, and temporary data can occupy more space than the archive alone.
The app also needs permission to create and update files in its Minecraft modding directory. CurseForge’s documented defaults are C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft on Windows and /Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft on macOS. Its troubleshooting guidance warns against using a Desktop or OneDrive location, the vanilla .minecraft directory, drive roots such as C:, or paths containing special or non-English characters. Safer alternatives listed by CurseForge include C:CurseForge or D:CurseForge on Windows and /Users/Shared/CurseForge/ on macOS. See the error-message guide and Minecraft troubleshooting guide.
If you change the modding directory, note the old path first. Pointing CurseForge at a new, empty directory can make existing profiles appear to have vanished. Do not delete the old CurseForge or Minecraft folders as a first fix: back up worlds, screenshots, configurations, instances, resource packs, and shader packs before removing or moving user data.

Repair the CurseForge installation
For a generic installation failure, including “Failed to download file” or “Error Code 0,” CurseForge recommends its repair option. The menu path documented in its Minecraft troubleshooting article, revised July 13, 2026, is:
- Open CurseForge and select the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Repair installation and let the process finish.
- Restart CurseForge and retry the pack. If it still fails, test another pack to see whether the failure is pack-specific.
Repairing is a safer early step than deleting the app’s folders or reinstalling everything. It cannot fix an unavailable pack file, an incompatible loader, or a network block.
Check firewall, antivirus, and network filtering
Firewall or antivirus software can interfere with CurseForge, Overwolf, Minecraft, Java, or loader downloads. Check the security product’s quarantine and activity history first. If a legitimate component was blocked, allow that component using the product’s narrowest suitable exception. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled. If you temporarily pause real-time protection to diagnose a problem, do so only if necessary, on a trusted network, and re-enable it immediately.
VPNs, proxies, DNS filters, parental controls, school or corporate networks, and captive portals can also disrupt downloads. Try disconnecting a VPN or testing on another trusted network, such as a phone hotspot, to distinguish a network restriction from an app problem. Check Windows proxy settings if a proxy is in use. CurseForge lists disabling IPv6 only as a last resort; it changes a system-wide network setting and should not be the first troubleshooting step. Fix the problem that matches the error
“Invalid file” when importing a ZIP
This usually means the archive is not in a format CurseForge can import. A valid profile ZIP should be a CurseForge-exported modpack or custom-profile archive with the expected structure, including manifest.json. A ZIP containing only individual mod files, a world, a resource pack, or unrelated folders is not the same thing. If you received a profile code rather than a ZIP, CurseForge says profile codes expire after seven days. Follow its exporting and importing instructions.
“A required dependency could not be installed” or a loader installation failure
A modpack can depend on files beyond the visible pack download, including its loader and required mods. Check the pack’s Minecraft version and loader, available disk space, folder write permissions, and whether security or network filtering blocks those downloads. A missing dependency may also have become unavailable. Do not substitute the latest Forge, Fabric, or other loader automatically; use the version specified by the pack or try a compatible earlier pack file.
“You need at least 10GB”
Free space on the destination drive, not just the system drive, may be the issue. Make room for the archive, extracted profile, loader files, and temporary installation data, then retry. The 10 GB figure is the threshold cited in CurseForge’s error-message documentation; it is not a promise that every pack’s full installation occupies exactly that amount.
“Modpack was not found” or the pack is unavailable
Check the pack page for another available file and confirm that the link points to a current file. A single unavailable pack is not evidence of a general CurseForge outage. If several unrelated packs fail at the same time, check official CurseForge announcements or support channels; server-side problems are possible, and waiting may be safer than changing system settings.

“Failed to create Minecraft directories” or “The system cannot find the file specified”
Check that the configured modding directory still exists and is writable. Look for a path moved, renamed, disconnected, synced by OneDrive, or placed where the app lacks permission. In CurseForge’s Minecraft settings, confirm the selected directory and restore the previous path if you changed it and existing profiles disappeared. Use a straightforward local folder rather than the Desktop, OneDrive, vanilla .minecraft, or a drive root.
If the website works but clicking Install does nothing
The website’s Install button hands the request to the desktop app; it does not replace the app’s download and installation process. CurseForge’s documented flow is to open the modpack page, click Install, then click Open when the browser prompts you. If the app does not open, start CurseForge directly, repair it, and try the handoff again. The prompt may be blocked or the app may not be handling the link.
If the pack provides an exported profile ZIP, you can download that file and use the app’s Import button instead, but only if it is a valid CurseForge export. Java and memory are usually more relevant after a profile has been installed, especially when Minecraft fails to start. CurseForge says Java is required for Minecraft modpacks and that the app installs Java automatically, though users can select another Java executable. The required Java version depends on the Minecraft version, loader, and pack, so do not install a single version on the assumption that it fits every pack. If Java was just installed or updated, restart the app and retry the launch.

Memory allocation affects how a pack runs, not usually whether the initial files can be downloaded. If installation completes but the pack will not launch, check the pack’s requirements, authentication, loader compatibility, and logs before changing memory settings. A launcher switch is also a launch-specific diagnostic, not a fix for a download that never begins: CurseForge documents Settings (gear icon) → Minecraft under Game Specific → Launcher settings, where you can change from Use CurseForge launcher to a Mojang launcher option. Consult the getting-started guide for supported launcher choices and Java handling, and the troubleshooting guide for launch recovery.
Reinstall only after the safer checks
If repair does not help, the app may be damaged. CurseForge’s download page currently offers standalone and Overwolf versions; switching or reinstalling may help when the failure is specific to the app layer, but it will not fix a blocked network, a removed pack file, or an incompatible loader. Before reinstalling, back up profiles and worlds and distinguish the app installation folder from the separate Minecraft modding directory. Do not delete user-data folders unless you have verified what they contain. The CurseForge app download page lists the available app options; Overwolf has a separate installation troubleshooting guide.
Another launcher may be a workaround for a CurseForge-specific app problem, but it does not make incompatible mods compatible or remove Minecraft account, version, loader, and dependency requirements. Manually assembling a pack from individual mods is also not equivalent to importing its profile: packs can require exact versions, configurations, overrides, dependencies, and folder structure.
When to wait or contact support
If multiple unrelated packs fail and official CurseForge channels report an incident, wait for the service to recover rather than deleting folders or changing network settings. If the problem persists, include these details in a support request:
