The Nex Playground is a camera-based active-play system for a TV or projector. Players move, jump, swing and gesture instead of using ordinary game controllers. The U.S. hardware listing checked for this guide is $299 and includes five games; Nex’s larger catalog requires a separate Play Pass subscription or one-time pass.
What the Nex Playground actually is
Nex Playground is best thought of as a modern, family-focused motion-gaming system rather than a conventional PlayStation or Xbox. Its small console has a wide-angle camera that tracks players and turns body movement into on-screen actions. Nex describes the system as tracking 18 points on the body and offering low-latency response; those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Nex’s explanation of how Playground works details the technology.
Games are downloaded to the closed platform rather than supplied on discs or cartridges. The included remote is mainly for menus and setup. Gameplay itself does not require holding a controller, and additional players generally do not need additional remotes.
How gameplay works
- Connect Playground to a TV or projector with HDMI.
- Connect it to Wi-Fi, complete setup and download games.
- Stand in front of the screen where the camera can see your body.
- Follow the selected game’s movements: swing, dodge, kick, dance, reach or gesture.
Nex says up to four people can play concurrently, but the limit depends on the individual game. “Four-player support” should not be read as a guarantee that every title accepts four players.
#1 Best Overall
- 5 GAMES INCLUDED. UNLOCK MORE WITH PLAY PASS. Playground comes with Fruit Ninja, Starri, Whac-a-Mole, Go Keeper, and Party Fowl. A separate purchase of a 3-Month ($49) or 12-Month Play Pass ($89) is required to access the full catalog of games and get new games each month, including Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, How to Train Your Dragon, Peppa Pig, Care Bears, Elmo, Miraculous Ladybug, Gabby's Dollhouse, Kung Fu Panda and more.
- GET MOVING WITH ACTIVE FAMILY FUN. Nex Playground is a new kind of video game console that gets your family moving. It easily connects to your TV, transforming your living room into an active play space. Within minutes, your family will be playing Fruit Ninja, Whac-a-Mole and more. Using a built-in camera to track motion and natural body movements, anyone in the family can jump right in.
- JUST USE YOUR BODY TO PLAY. Play naturally just by moving your body. Playground uses the magic of AI to follow your movements using the built-in wide-angle camera. No controllers or clunky trackers! Up to 4 players can play at the same time, so everyone can get moving together.
- GAMES YOU'LL LOVE MOVING TO. Playground is packed with interactive motion games, turning your living room into an arcade, theme park, gym, and more. There is something for everyone. It is perfect for indoor family game night, after school activities, or a playdate with friends.
- EASY SET UP. Playground connects to your TV or projector with a simple HDMI connection and gets everyone in on the fun. It's small and sits elegantly on any console or mantle, and can easily fit in a backpack for playdates and more. From ages 5 and up—Playground is the life of every party.
What is in the box?
- Nex Playground system
- Magnetic camera privacy cover
- Remote control
- Power supply
- HDMI cable
- Five-game starter pack
Play Pass is separate unless a particular retailer bundle explicitly says otherwise. Check the edition and region before buying, especially outside the United States.
Which games are included?
The standard U.S. starter pack listed by Nex contains:
- Fruit Ninja — reflex-based slicing.
- Whac-a-Mole Deluxe — quick reactions and movement.
- Party Fowl — party-style mini-games.
- Go Keeper — goalkeeper and sports play.
- Starri — rhythm and movement.
Nex’s broader catalog was described as 50-plus games when checked, spanning sports, dance, fitness, trivia, arcade activities and licensed family characters. The catalog changes, and new content is promoted monthly. See the current Nex game catalog for the present lineup. Advertising for other games does not mean those games are included with the hardware.
Is Play Pass required?
No. The five starter games work without Play Pass. Play Pass is required for the larger catalog and many newer releases, making it the main value decision after buying the hardware.

| Option | Price listed by Nex (U.S.) | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Three-month subscription | $49 | Auto-renews; direct Nex purchases can be refunded within 14 days of activation under Nex’s stated policy. |
| 12-month subscription | $89 | Auto-renews; paid upfront, equivalent to about $7.42 per month. |
| One-time pass | Varies by seller | Uses an activation code, does not auto-renew, and starts when activated. Retailer and Amazon codes generally follow different, usually non-refundable, rules. |
The three-month plan works out to about $16.33 per month. The annual plan is cheaper over time only if the family expects regular use. A household interested in occasional play can start with the included games and subscribe later. Nex’s Play Pass page and support article contain the current terms, activation and household-use details.
What does Nex Playground cost?
| Purchase | Current figure checked |
|---|---|
| Hardware | $299 USD, before tax |
| Hardware plus three-month Play Pass | $348, before tax |
| Hardware plus 12-month Play Pass | $388, before tax |
These totals exclude shipping, tax, promotions and accessories. One captured official listing showed a temporary $239 price, but that should be treated as a sale rather than the normal price. The product page may also list a travel case or other accessories without making them part of the standard box.
Room, TV and internet requirements
- A TV or projector with an HDMI input.
- Wi-Fi for initial setup, downloads and updates.
- Approximately 6 feet by 6 feet of clear play space.
- A camera position centered in front of or below the screen, with the player’s body visible.
- Nex’s current recommended device height: 15 to 60 inches.
Measure the room before ordering. Six feet by six feet is guidance, not a promise that every title will track equally well in every layout. Furniture, glare, dim lighting, pets and overlapping players can interfere with tracking. Nex says downloaded games can be played offline and the device has 64GB of storage, but setup, acquiring games and updates still require connectivity. Download what you need before taking the unit to a cabin, hotel or second home.
Who is it for?
Nex recommends Playground for ages 5 and up. Some younger children may enjoy selected games with an adult or older sibling, while physically demanding titles may not suit every child. It is a strong match for:

Privacy and physical safety
Nex says the camera does not store video, that video is not shared without permission, and that the magnetic cover can block the lens when the system is idle. Nex also says its catalog has no ads, chat, violence or microtransactions and describes Playground as kidSafe+ and COPPA certified. These are company and certification claims, not a guarantee that every account, diagnostic or network-data question is eliminated; review Nex’s current privacy policy for those details. Nex’s hardware page explains its stated privacy approach.
Clear the floor, move coffee tables and breakable objects, keep pets out of the tracking area, supervise younger children, use secure flooring and take breaks during long sessions. Check each game’s physical demands.

Common problems and fixes
No picture
- Select the correct HDMI input.
- Reseat both HDMI ends or try another port and compatible cable.
- Power-cycle the TV and Playground.
- Test on a TV if a projector is involved.
Poor motion tracking
- Move Playground closer to the stand’s edge and center it below the screen.
- Ensure the camera sees the full player.
- Remove furniture, toys, pets and extra people from view.
- Improve lighting and reduce glare; test one player first.
Players are not recognized
Stay within the recommended area, avoid overlapping bodies and check that the specific game supports the intended number of players.
Downloads or updates stall
Confirm Wi-Fi, leave the system connected to finish, restart it if necessary, then contact Nex support.
Play Pass code is late
Nex says codes bought from its website typically arrive within 30 minutes or less; Amazon delivery can take up to 48 hours. Buying Play Pass on the Playground activates access immediately.
Lost remote
Nex identifies replacement remotes through its support and replacement-accessory channels; use the current support page rather than relying on an old price.

Is it worth buying?
Buy Nex Playground if your priority is quick, shared, controller-free activity and you have the required floor space. Budget for Play Pass if five games are unlikely to remain varied enough. Skip it if you want a general-purpose console, deep conventional games, or a system with no recurring content cost.
Alternatives
| Alternative | Better choice when… | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | You want a broad traditional game library plus some motion games. | More controllers, setup and separate game purchases; motion play is not the whole system. |
| Ring Fit Adventure | You want structured exercise and role-playing progression. | Requires compatible Switch hardware, Ring-Con and leg strap; less suited to quick multi-player parties. |
| Meta Quest 3 | You want immersive VR and a much wider range of experiences. | Headset sharing, age guidance, boundaries and motion comfort add complexity. |
| Existing console motion games | You already own compatible hardware and accessories. | Less turnkey than Playground’s purpose-built camera setup. |
The simplest buying test is practical: can your household clear the space, accept the camera-based format and decide whether the five included games are enough or Play Pass belongs in the budget?
Frequently Asked Questions
