The best R.E.P.O. mod depends on what your group wants to change: easier inventory management, late joining, shared team health, configuration controls, or larger lobbies. Because Thunderstore packages and compatibility notes change frequently, treat the examples below as starting points rather than a permanent ranking. Check each package’s current description, dependencies, supported game version, and multiplayer scope before installing.
Where to find R.E.P.O. mods
Thunderstore’s R.E.P.O. community directory is the main place to browse packages. Its categories include quality-of-life, client-side, server-side, items, upgrades, and tools. Listings, download order, and package status are live platform data, so a mod that is popular or functional today may require an update after a game patch.
Use the package page—not an old recommendation list—as the final authority for requirements. Look for the author’s installation notes, dependency list, supported version, multiplayer instructions, and known conflicts.
Mod types worth considering
Configuration and quality-of-life tools
Configuration mods expose settings that would otherwise require editing files or accepting a package’s defaults. A third-party R.E.P.O. installation guide identifies REPOConfig as an example of a configuration-menu mod. Confirm that the current package is maintained and that its dependencies match your profile before choosing it.

Late-join mods
Late-join packages are designed to let a player enter after a run has already started. They are useful when a friend disconnects or arrives late, but joining mid-run touches game state and networking. Read the current package notes carefully and have every participant use the versions the author specifies.
Inventory and convenience changes
Thunderstore’s current directory includes an extra-slots example that describes additional item slots and client-side behavior. This kind of mod improves carrying capacity without necessarily changing the whole lobby, but “client-side” does not automatically mean it is compatible with every host or mod combination.

Shared team effects
A documented shared-health project is intended to make players use a common health pool in multiplayer. That behavior is specific to the project’s own documentation; it is not evidence that every shared-gameplay mod works together or that all players can install it independently.
Larger lobbies
Older guides commonly recommended MorePlayers for groups larger than six. That advice is dated unless the package page confirms that the current release still supports the feature and game build. Increasing lobby size can also increase network traffic and instability, so test it with the smallest practical group first.

How to install R.E.P.O. mods
The following workflow comes from third-party R.E.P.O. mod guidance rather than an official developer manual. Thunderstore Mod Manager is the most directly documented option; that guide also names Gale and r2modman as alternatives.
- Install a mod manager. Choose Thunderstore Mod Manager, Gale, or r2modman, then select R.E.P.O. as the game.
- Create a separate profile. Keep a clean, unmodded profile so you can compare behavior and launch the vanilla game when needed.
- Install BepInExPack first. Add the current R.E.P.O. BepInEx package listed by the manager. Let the manager resolve its required files.
- Add one or two target mods. Select the package you want and accept its listed dependencies. Starting with a small set makes conflicts easier to identify.
- Read each package’s instructions. Some mods have in-game configuration, required launch arguments, host-only rules, or special setup steps that the manager cannot explain.
- Launch the modded profile through the manager. Do not assume that launching the ordinary game shortcut loads the profile you just configured.
- Have the group coordinate versions. Compare profile contents and package versions before joining a shared session, especially when a mod changes gameplay or networking.
Multiplayer compatibility: what to check
| Scope label or behavior | What it usually means for your group | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Client-side | The change is primarily applied on an individual player’s installation. | Whether the host and other clients also need the package, and whether the author lists restrictions. |
| Host-only or server-side | The host’s installation controls the session’s behavior. | Whether joining players need a matching dependency or a specific version. |
| All players required | Every participant must use a compatible copy. | Exact version, dependency list, and compatibility with the host’s other mods. |
| Late join, shared health, or larger lobby | The mod changes shared game state or networking. | Join timing, disconnect recovery, player limit, and known interaction problems. |
Do not promise that an arbitrary collection of packages will work together. A package’s scope label is a starting point, not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Choosing mods by outcome
- You want fewer setup hassles: start with a maintained configuration or quality-of-life package.
- Your group regularly arrives late: investigate a current late-join package and test it before using it on an important run.
- You run out of carrying space: consider an extra-slots package, checking whether its client-side behavior is accepted by the host.
- You want a stronger team identity: a shared-health mod changes the risk model for everyone, so agree on it before starting a campaign.
- You need more than six players: verify the current larger-lobby package and be prepared for extra network load or reduced stability.
Network and stability cautions
Semiwork’s developers have encouraged mod makers to optimize server traffic. PC Gamer reported their statement: “We encourage mods. It’s so fun to see people add their own personality to our game. And while on this topic, we want to encourage all mod makers to please optimize the amount of server traffic they send to avoid any skyrocketing server costs. That would mean a lot to us.”
That request is especially relevant to mods that expand lobbies or frequently synchronize new state. It does not establish a universal player limit or certify any particular package. If a mod causes lag, desynchronization, failed joins, or crashes, remove it from the profile and retest with only the framework and one selected mod.
Troubleshooting a modded profile
The game launches normally but the mod does nothing
- Confirm that you launched the manager’s modded profile rather than the vanilla shortcut.
- Check that BepInExPack is installed in the profile and that the package supports your current game build.
- Review the package’s configuration or keybind instructions.
A friend cannot join
- Compare the host’s and client’s package lists and versions.
- Check whether the package is host-only, client-side, or requires all players.
- Temporarily remove gameplay-changing and networking mods, then add them back one at a time.
The session becomes unstable
- Disable larger-lobby or other network-heavy changes first.
- Use the package author’s issue tracker or documentation for known conflicts.
- Keep a clean profile available so you can confirm whether the base game still works.
A sensible first profile
For a first experiment, create a profile with BepInExPack and one low-impact quality-of-life or configuration mod. Once that works, add either a late-join, inventory, shared-health, or larger-lobby package according to your group’s goal—not all of them at once. This approach gives you a clear rollback path when an update or dependency causes trouble.
