1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerdict: The 2024 Intel Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 GU605 is one of the most appealing gaming-and-creator laptops of its generation. Its 16-inch 2560×1600 OLED panel combines excellent contrast, wide-gamut color, up to 240Hz and NVIDIA G-SYNC, while the aluminum chassis is unusually thin and light for a machine with RTX 40-series graphics. The trade-off is equally clear: the slim design limits GPU power, raises noise and thermals under sustained loads, leaves some configurations with difficult memory-upgrade decisions, and still requires a large proprietary charger for full performance.
Buy it when the OLED experience, portability and understated design matter as much as frame rate—preferably with 32GB RAM and an RTX 4070 or better. Choose a thicker gaming laptop instead if maximum performance per dollar, easy upgrades or long sustained rendering sessions are your priorities. This review covers the Intel GU605; the AMD GA605 is a separate model.

Design: premium, portable and still a gaming laptop
The 2024 redesign moves the G16 toward an all-aluminum, creator-friendly design rather than an aggressively styled desktop replacement. At roughly 1.85–1.95kg, it is genuinely portable for an RTX gaming machine, and the 16:10 chassis provides useful vertical space without becoming a 17-inch-class burden. ASUS’s Slash Lighting treatment adds gaming identity without making the laptop inappropriate in an office or classroom.
The headline weight excludes the power brick. Maximum-performance gaming uses ASUS’s proprietary charger, which is substantially less convenient than carrying the laptop alone. USB-C charging is useful for lighter work, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the supplied adapter when gaming or running demanding workloads.
The OLED G-SYNC display is the reason to buy it
What the panel delivers
- 2560×1600 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio.
- Up to 240Hz refresh with NVIDIA G-SYNC.
- ASUS-listed 0.2ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 coverage and Pantone validation.
- VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification.
OLED pixels can turn off completely, producing genuinely deep blacks and striking contrast in games and films. The 16:10 format gives documents, timelines and code more vertical room than a conventional 16:9 gaming panel. Wide-gamut coverage is valuable for photo, video and design work, although web content is best viewed in an appropriate sRGB mode when available.
G-SYNC synchronizes the display’s refresh with the GPU’s output. It reduces tearing and uneven frame delivery; it does not add rendering power or make every game run at 240 frames per second. RTX 4060 and 4070 models are more realistically high-refresh 1080p/1600p machines with settings compromises in demanding games. The 240Hz ceiling is most meaningful in esports and lighter titles.
Important OLED compromises
- The glossy finish reflects windows and overhead lighting more readily than a matte panel.
- Some users notice OLED subpixel text characteristics, especially in small fonts.
- Static interfaces can create image retention or long-term burn-in risk. Use panel-care features, varied content and sensible brightness rather than leaving bright fixed toolbars on screen all day.
- “True Black 500” is a certification, not a complete HDR review. Perceived HDR impact still depends on brightness behavior and image content.
- Panel behavior, brightness and refresh options can vary by region and SKU.
Independent testing should be read against the exact configuration. RTINGS tested a GU605 with Core Ultra 9 185H, RTX 4070, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage and a 240Hz QHD+ OLED panel: RTINGS review.
Gaming performance: fast, but not a full-power RTX laptop
The G16’s GPU name is only half the story. Its thin chassis comes with lower power ceilings than many thicker competitors: ASUS lists up to 105W for RTX 4070 versions and up to 115W for RTX 4080 and 4090 versions. A G16 RTX 4090 therefore should not be assumed to perform like every full-power RTX 4090 laptop.
What each class is suited to
- RTX 4050/4060: sensible for high-refresh competitive games and 1600p gaming with reduced settings or upscaling in demanding releases.
- RTX 4070: the practical sweet spot for mixed gaming and creative work, provided its price is substantially below newer systems.
- RTX 4080/4090: the best GU605 choices for high-detail 1600p play, but their thin-laptop power limits reduce the advantage over thicker machines.
Ray tracing commonly benefits from DLSS and frame generation. Compare any benchmark by resolution, preset, ray-tracing state, DLSS setting, frame-generation state and plugged-in performance mode. A 240Hz panel is an excellent capability, not a promise of 240fps in modern AAA games.
Rank #2
- High-Performance Processing: Powered by an Intel 16-core Ultra 9 285H processor (2.9GHz base, up to 5.4GHz boost, 24MB Smart Cache, 16 Threads) paired with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7 graphics card.
- Immersive Display: Features a 16-inch 2.5K (2560x1600) OLED display with a 240Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, 500 nits brightness, and NVIDIA G-SYNC support.
- Extensive Connectivity: Offers versatile ports including Thunderbolt 4, USB-C 3.2 (with DisplayPort, Power Delivery, and G-SYNC), two USB-A 3.2, HDMI 2.1 FRL, and an SD card reader for maximum flexibility.
- Complete Software & Feature Suite: Comes with Windows 11 Professional and is equipped with a 1-zone RGB backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 7, Dolby Atmos audio, AI noise-canceling technology, and a premium 4-speaker system with dual-force woofers, smart amplifiers, and tweeters.
- Enhanced Communication: Includes an FHD IR camera for clear video calls and secure facial recognition login.
Independent coverage reaches a similar conclusion: the OLED panel is exceptional, while gaming value is more mixed against thicker laptops with larger cooling and power budgets. See Tom’s Hardware and Notebookcheck.
Intel Meteor Lake and creator workloads
Core Ultra 7 155H and Core Ultra 9 185H are Intel’s Meteor Lake processors. Their hybrid core layouts and integrated NPU support efficiency and selected AI workloads, but the NPU is not a major gaming-performance feature. The Ultra 9 badge also does not turn this thin chassis into an HX-class workstation: sustained multicore speed depends on cooling, fan mode and power limits.
The G16 is unusually well suited to creators because it combines a high-resolution 16:10 workspace, wide color gamut, OLED contrast and RTX acceleration in a restrained body. Photo editing, timeline work and GPU-enabled effects benefit from that combination. Long exports, 3D renders and large projects expose the same limits as gaming: a thicker laptop can sustain higher power, and 16GB memory can become the bottleneck.
Thermals, fan noise and sustained performance
ASUS uses a thin-laptop cooling design that includes vapor-chamber cooling, liquid metal, heat pipes and Arc Flow fans on relevant GU605 configurations. Expect the machine to behave differently across Quiet, Performance and Turbo modes. A fair evaluation separates idle, CPU-only and GPU gaming loads and records keyboard temperatures, fan noise and performance after a long run—not just a short benchmark.
The central trade-off is predictable: the cooling system makes high-end graphics possible in a portable body, but sustained performance and acoustics cannot match a thicker laptop with a higher GPU power budget. Turbo mode is intended for plugged-in use and is louder; Quiet mode is more appropriate for office work and media.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Battery life: 90Wh helps, settings decide
Every listed GU605 configuration uses a 90Wh battery, a substantial capacity for this class. Capacity alone does not establish “all-day” use. OLED brightness, 60Hz versus 240Hz, Windows power mode, Armoury Crate settings, background applications and whether the discrete GPU is awake all change the result.
- Web and office work: the most favorable case when the integrated graphics and a sensible refresh rate are used.
- Video playback: strongly affected by brightness, HDR and refresh settings.
- Gaming on battery: not equivalent to plugged-in Turbo performance; frame rates and sustained power are reduced.
- USB-C power: convenient for light productivity, but not a replacement for the proprietary adapter at maximum gaming performance.
TechRadar’s review also notes the performance reduction that can occur on battery or USB-C power: TechRadar review.

Keyboard, touchpad, audio, camera and ports
As a daily computer, the G16 adds a four-speaker system with Dolby Atmos support and AI noise cancellation to its gaming hardware. Keyboard travel, RGB controls, touchpad behavior, webcam quality and microphone processing should be checked on the exact regional unit; ASUS’s feature set and port layout can vary by configuration.
Plan around the advertised connectivity—HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, headset connectivity and, where fitted, an SD-card reader—but verify the exact specification page before assuming a particular reader, wireless standard or USB-C charging capability. ASUS lists Wi-Fi 7 on relevant configurations. The official page is here.

RAM, SSD and long-term ownership
Memory upgradeability is a buying decision, not a footnote. Some 16GB configurations are reported to use soldered memory, but that should not be generalized to every GU605 SKU without model-specific service documentation. Confirm whether RAM is soldered, whether a SO-DIMM slot exists, how many M.2 slots are present and what SSD form factors are supported.
- Choose 32GB at purchase for video editing, virtual machines, large photo catalogs, 3D work or long ownership.
- Treat 16GB as adequate for ordinary gaming, but less future-proof as games, browsers and launchers grow.
- Do not buy a cheaper 16GB model assuming an upgrade is guaranteed.
- Confirm SSD replacement and chassis-opening terms for your region before planning an upgrade.
The tested RTINGS sample used 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, but that sample does not establish the upgrade design of every retail configuration.
Intel GU605 versus AMD GA605
The AMD GA605 is not an Intel GU605 with a different sticker. It uses Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 hardware and is listed with up to an RTX 4070, while the Intel family extends to RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 options. CPU behavior, efficiency, thermals, battery results and availability therefore cannot be transferred from one model to the other.
Consider the GA605 when efficiency and the newer AMD platform matter more than access to the Intel model’s higher GPU tiers. Its official overview is here, with ASUS’s announcement at this page.
