Spoiler-light hints for Connections #539

Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. The reported game format allows up to four mistakes; secondary guides also describe four groups that increase in difficulty and a daily reset at midnight local time.

  • Yellow: Somewhere safe or protected.
  • Green: Locker-room kit for a field sport.
  • Blue: Sweet treats or candy-associated names.
  • Purple: Add the same word before each entry to complete a familiar phrase or title.

The puzzle words are SOLO, JERSEY, WILLY, WONKA, YORK, HAVEN, KINDER, BIRD, PADS, CHARMS, PORT, HELMET, RETREAT, FALLIN’, CLEATS, and SHELTER.

Group Words Connection
Yellow HAVEN, PORT, RETREAT, SHELTER Sanctuary: each can mean or describe a safe place or refuge.
Green CLEATS, HELMET, JERSEY, PADS Football gear: equipment or uniform items used for football.
Blue CHARMS, KINDER, WONKA, YORK Candy names: names associated with candy brands or products rather than ordinary candy types.
Purple BIRD, FALLIN’, SOLO, WILLY “Free ___”: Free Bird, Free Fallin’, Free Solo, and Free Willy.

Why the trickiest groups work

Blue: candy-associated names

CHARMS, KINDER, WONKA, and YORK are brand or product names linked with sweets. They are not four generic kinds of candy, which makes this group easier to miss.

Purple: familiar “Free” titles

Putting FREE before each word produces four recognizable titles or phrases: “Free Bird,” “Free Fallin’,” “Free Solo,” and “Free Willy.”
