Facebook Instant Games launched on November 29, 2016, with 17 titles playable through Messenger and Facebook News Feed without installing a separate game app. The list below is the verified launch lineup—not a current 2026 catalog. Historical sources establish how the feature worked at launch, but not whether these games or the same entry points remain available today.
What were Facebook Instant Games?
Instant Games was Facebook’s HTML5-based gaming platform, built into Messenger and Facebook rather than distributed as a separate native game app. A player could open a lightweight game from a chat or a Facebook surface, play a short session, and share the result with friends. “Instant Games” refers to the platform; “Games on Messenger” was the Messenger-facing feature, while News Feed posts and game cards offered another way to discover and launch titles. Facebook’s November 2016 announcement described the launch and its intended access points.
Not every title was necessarily identical across devices. “Cross-platform” meant the games were integrated with Facebook experiences on supported mobile devices and desktop web—not that every game or control worked the same way everywhere.
The 17 games in the November 2016 launch lineup
Facebook’s launch list named these 17 games and their associated publishers or developers. The categories below describe their apparent formats; they were not presented as official Facebook classifications. Facebook’s localized launch announcement is the source for the titles and company attributions.

These are the launch names: for example, Facebook listed Hex, Zookeeper, Puzzle Bobble, and Words with Friends: Frenzy. Similar or later titles should not be silently substituted into this dated list.
How to start a game in Messenger in the launch-era interface
Facebook’s 2016 instructions described this route. The controller icon and menu labels are historical interface details, not confirmed directions for the Messenger app in 2026.

- Tap the game-controller icon below the message-entry field.
- Choose a game and play a round.
- After the round, the score could appear in the conversation for others to see and challenge.
Facebook also said users could search for games within Messenger. The precise menus and controls may have changed since launch.
How News Feed fit into the launch
In the 2016 experience, people could encounter a game post, recommendation, or shared score in News Feed and select its Play control or game card to open the title inside Facebook. They could play solo or challenge friends through Messenger. That describes the original product design; it does not establish that News Feed remains a game-discovery route in the current Facebook interface.

How the games connected friends
The social layer centered on scores and friendly competition rather than requiring everyone to play at the same moment. A player could post a result in the originating conversation, compare scores on leaderboards, or challenge a friend or group. Friends could take their turns later, making much of the competition asynchronous. Facebook’s launch announcement described in-context chat, score-based leaderboards, and group-thread play.
Where and on what devices the launch was available
Facebook announced Instant Games on November 29, 2016, initially rolling it out in 30 countries. The launch supported newer iOS and Android devices as well as Facebook desktop/web access. Its localized announcement named markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Those details describe the initial 2016 rollout, not a current availability map; the announcements do not establish identical device support in every market.

The no-download benefit meant users did not need to install a separate native game app. The game still had to load, so this should not be read as meaning no data use or online activity.

The 17 titles were a launch snapshot, not a permanent complete catalog. In May 2017, Facebook said availability was expanding worldwide and that users could see up to 50 titles depending on device and location. That update also described additions such as turn-based play, tournaments, leaderboards, richer game messages, and game bots. By December 2017, Facebook reported more than 70 games from over 100 developers and announced later additions including Tetris and an Angry Birds title. These are dated milestones, not a count of the catalog today. Facebook’s May 2017 update and its December 2017 anniversary post document that expansion.

Are the launch games still playable now?
The historical sources verify the 17-game lineup and its launch paths, but they do not confirm that those titles—or Instant Games as a platform—remain playable in August 2026. Availability can depend on Facebook’s current product surfaces, a publisher’s continued support, account, device, and location. Treat any page calling this a current complete list cautiously unless it provides current, title-specific confirmation from Facebook or the publisher.
- If the controller icon is missing: the app may have changed, the feature or entry point may not be available to the account or region, or the title may no longer be supported. The icon was the original route, not a guaranteed current control. If available, check Messenger or Facebook search, or open a shared game post.
- If a launch title does not appear: that alone does not show that you are doing something wrong. A game may have been retired, delisted, restricted by region, or removed from the current experience.
- If a list includes other familiar Facebook games: titles such as 8 Ball Pool, UNO, Golf Clash, Asphalt 9, FarmVille 2, Trivia Crack, or Angry Birds should not be added to the verified 17-game launch lineup without title-specific evidence. Some may belong to later catalogs or other gaming experiences.
Before opening a third-party game that is available to you, review the permissions it requests. The historical launch announcements do not establish a current permission set for these titles.
