Status: closed. The “Register now to beta test the Xbox Live 2013 update” notice referred to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Update for Xbox 360 Public Beta, announced on July 5, 2013. Registration ended in every region by July 12, 2013, so there is no current sign-up process.
The beta was for Xbox 360—not Xbox One, Windows, or the modern Xbox Insider program. Microsoft administered enrollment through the Xbox 360 dashboard and limited participation by market and available places.
What the Xbox Live 2013 beta was
Microsoft’s July 5, 2013 announcement described a public test of an upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard and Xbox Live update. The company said the build included general performance improvements and testing for purchases in local currency as Microsoft Points were being retired later that year. The announcement is available from Xbox Wire.
This was a transitional Xbox 360 service update during the period leading up to the Xbox One launch, not a preview of a new-generation console interface. Participants were expected to provide feedback and keep beta information confidential under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

How registration worked in July 2013
The original enrollment path was entirely on the console. It was not a general web form.
- Turn on an Xbox 360 and sign in to Xbox Live.
- Open the dashboard’s home hub.
- Select the Xbox Beta Program tile.
- Follow the enrollment prompts.
- Read and accept the beta program’s NDA.
- Wait for Microsoft to determine participation and begin rolling out the test update.
Enrollment did not guarantee an immediate download. Microsoft described the program as limited, and the beta began rolling out after registration opened.
Who could apply?
Microsoft said Xbox Live members in its 41 Xbox Live-enabled markets could participate, with Japan scheduled to open later. That wording did not mean every Xbox 360 owner worldwide could enroll at the same moment.
- Market restrictions: availability depended on the participant’s Xbox Live region.
- Japan: sign-up opened later during the rollout.
- Capacity: Microsoft warned that places were limited; some additional spaces opened briefly in selected markets.
- Xbox Live Gold: the announcement referred to “Xbox Live members” but does not establish from the available information whether a Gold subscription was mandatory.
The beta was therefore both geographically restricted and capacity-limited. There is no verified public figure for the number of participants or a guarantee that every applicant was accepted.

What testers were evaluating
Local-currency purchases
The most visible change was the move away from Microsoft Points. The beta let Microsoft test transactions displayed in a user’s applicable local currency instead of requiring a separate Points balance. In practical terms, digital prices would be shown as familiar currency amounts, eliminating the need to buy and convert Microsoft Points before making a purchase.
Microsoft described Points as being retired later in 2013. The beta announcement alone does not establish the eventual conversion formula, refund policy, or every rule applied to existing balances.
Xbox 360 and Xbox Live performance
Microsoft also cited improvements intended to enhance overall system performance. The announcement did not provide a complete feature list, final dashboard build number, or a detailed catalog of bug fixes, so claims about specific changes to Kinect, party chat, notifications, Xbox Music, Xbox Video, or account management would go beyond the verified description.
Feedback and confidentiality
Participants were part of a feedback process and accepted an NDA. That meant the program was not an unrestricted invitation to publish screenshots, videos, or detailed impressions while the test was underway.

Registration and rollout timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| July 5, 2013 | Microsoft announced the Xbox 360 public beta and opened enrollment in participating markets. |
| July 9, 2013 | The beta update began rolling out; rollout timing was not necessarily identical for every registrant. |
| July 10, 2013 | Japan sign-up became available, and limited additional spaces opened in selected markets. |
| July 12, 2013 | Microsoft stated that registration had closed in all regions. |
The opening date was also reported in contemporaneous coverage such as GamesBeat’s July 5, 2013 roundup. Microsoft’s update confirms the registration closure, but it does not specify the exact date on which every participant stopped receiving or running beta software.
Can you register today?
No. The July 12, 2013 closure applies to the historical Xbox 360 public beta. An old Xbox Wire page, archived article, or search result that still contains “sign up” wording is not a live enrollment offer.
There is no current Xbox 360 dashboard tile, web form, subscription, or Xbox purchase that provides access to this beta. Modern Xbox Insider enrollment is a separate program and should not be treated as a continuation of the 2013 test.
What the headline gets wrong today
- “Register now” is obsolete: it was accurate only during the short July 2013 enrollment window.
- It was not an Xbox One beta: the tested software targeted Xbox 360.
- It was not universally open: Microsoft identified 41 supported markets, opened Japan later, and limited places.
- Registration was console-based: applicants used the Xbox Beta Program tile on the dashboard.
- Access was confidential: acceptance of an NDA was part of enrollment.
- The change involved payments as well as performance: local-currency transactions were a central purpose of the test, alongside broader Xbox Live improvements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was an Xbox Live Gold subscription required?
Microsoft’s announcement says “Xbox Live members” but does not establish in the available source whether Gold was mandatory, so a definitive Gold requirement cannot be confirmed.

Did joining guarantee beta access?
No guarantee is documented. Places were limited, and Microsoft determined participation before rolling the update out.
Did the beta immediately eliminate Microsoft Points?
No. It tested local-currency transactions ahead of Microsoft’s planned retirement of Points later in 2013; the announcement does not provide the later conversion or refund rules.
What did the NDA mean for participants?
Enrollment required accepting a non-disclosure agreement, so participants were not free to publish unrestricted beta details while the test was covered by those terms.
