The headline referred to a December 14, 2010 controversy over advertising in the free Android version of Angry Birds: players reported both display ads around the game screen and full-screen video commercials at launch or between play sessions. Some found the ads intrusive, slow, or costly on limited data plans; others considered them a fair trade for a free game. The report captured a varied player experience, not a universal pattern—and it says nothing about advertising in today’s versions of the game.
What did the headline refer to?
Phandroid’s December 14, 2010 article described complaints about ads in Android’s Angry Birds. The issue was not simply that the free game carried advertising. Players objected to formats they felt interrupted play, occupied useful screen space, or affected performance. Phandroid’s contemporaneous report and reader discussion are the direct record of the episode.
The article and comments did not describe one consistent experience. Some readers said they encountered frequent video ads; others reported only small banners, ads they could dismiss quickly, or no video at all. The headline’s question should therefore not be read as proof that every Android player saw the same commercial or placement.
Where did players say the ads appeared?
- Display ads: Readers described small ads in a corner or along the edge of the gameplay screen, where they could take up part of the visible play area.
- Video commercials: The report discussed videos appearing at launch or between sessions. Some comments placed ads around gameplay rather than neatly at a level boundary.
- A Windows Phone 7 commercial: One commenter identified this ad. That is an individual report, not evidence of a universal campaign.
Placement and frequency appear to have varied. The article does not establish whether differences came from the phone, game edition, update, connectivity, or ad delivery, so it cannot support a claim that every version behaved alike.

In the 2010 discussion, readers contrasted the free Android release with the paid iPhone model. Advertising offered a way to earn revenue from Android players without charging them upfront, a trade-off some readers accepted. This comparison reflects the period’s conversation; the article is not a full account of Rovio’s business strategy or every edition on either platform.

The disagreement was about the terms of that exchange. Some players said ads were reasonable because the game was free, especially when the ads were small or easy to dismiss. Others said they would rather pay for an ad-free version than have commercials interrupt play. Their comments show that the controversy was about the degree and implementation of monetization, not a unanimous rejection of advertising.
Did the ads interfere with gameplay?
Some readers attributed lag, choppy play, loading delays, and blocked screen space to the ads. Others raised mobile-data use as a concern, particularly for people with limited or pay-as-you-go plans. These reports help explain why an ad could feel more disruptive on one phone or connection than another.

The controversy illustrates a tension that became central to free mobile games: advertising can make a game accessible without an upfront charge, but its timing and placement affect the experience being monetized. An ad beside the playfield, a video before a session, and a commercial that delays or obscures play are different costs to the player—even if all count as advertising.

For a game built around quick, repeated interactions, interruptions can undermine goodwill or make a free option feel like poor value. Conversely, players who saw ads as unobtrusive could regard them as a reasonable exchange. The 2010 comments document that debate, but they do not measure its effect on retention or revenue.
