The double feature—an Xbox Games Showcase followed by a Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct—revealed Gears of War: E-Day, DOOM: The Dark Ages, new footage of Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3 and other first-party games, and three new Xbox Series X|S configurations. It also confirmed that Black Ops 6 would launch on October 25, 2024 and arrive day one in selected Game Pass plans.
That answered the immediate question—does Xbox have a deep pipeline of games?—with a convincing yes. It did not fully explain how Xbox hardware should compete as Microsoft expands PC, cloud and multiplatform publishing, or how Game Pass economics will work with its biggest annual releases.
What the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase was
The event took place on Sunday, June 9, 2024. The main showcase began at 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. Eastern), with the dedicated Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct following immediately. Xbox, Bethesda, Activision and official partner channels carried the broadcasts. Microsoft described this as its first showcase combining games from Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda, Xbox Game Studios and third-party publishers.
The format mattered. The main presentation established Xbox’s wider release pipeline; the separate Direct gave Activision’s new Black Ops campaign, multiplayer and Zombies modes their own focused presentation. The official viewing details are archived at Xbox Wire.

What viewers expected before the show—and what actually appeared
Before the event, the safest predictions were already announced games needing a marketing update or approaching release. A May 22, 2024 preview identified Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Fable, South of Midnight, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark, Starfield: Shattered Space, Ara: History Untold and Towerborne as plausible appearances, alongside updates for live games such as Sea of Thieves and Fallout 76. It also treated projects such as Everwild and Contraband as possibilities, not confirmations. That distinction is important when reading the contemporary prediction coverage at Windows Central.
The finished presentation showed most of the major near-term titles and added two major surprises: Gears of War: E-Day and DOOM: The Dark Ages. Microsoft’s full announcement list is available in its official recap.
Near-term games and dates
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: October 25, 2024.
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: November 19, 2024.
- Avowed and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: presented as 2024 releases at the time.
- Starfield: Shattered Space: shown as an upcoming expansion.
Medium-term and undated projects
- Fable: targeted for 2025.
- DOOM: The Dark Ages: targeted for 2025.
- South of Midnight, Perfect Dark and State of Decay 3: received substantial new footage without firm launch dates.
- Gears of War: E-Day: a long-range franchise announcement with no release date.
A trailer demonstrates that a project exists and is being marketed; it does not establish that launch is imminent. Treat dated releases as the highest-certainty part of the roadmap, target-year games as medium certainty, and undated projects as long-term signals.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and the Game Pass decision
Black Ops 6 was developed by Treyarch and Raven Software and is set in the early 1990s. The Direct provided deeper looks at its campaign, multiplayer and Zombies modes. The game launched on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC on October 25, 2024.

Microsoft confirmed day-one access through Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass PC and Game Pass Console, as specified in its announcement at Xbox Wire. That is subscription access, not a free permanent copy: an eligible subscription is required, and platform features vary by plan and device.
The decision was commercially significant. It made Game Pass immediately more valuable for players who would otherwise buy the annual blockbuster, while raising the larger question of how Microsoft balances subscription growth against full-price sales for its biggest releases.
The two biggest surprises: Gears and DOOM
Gears of War: E-Day was not Gears 6
The closing reveal was Gears of War: E-Day, not a game formally titled Gears of War 6. It is an origin story set during the Locust invasion known as Emergence Day, starring younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. The Coalition said it is being built in Unreal Engine 5. The streamed trailer was presented at 4K/30fps, but that presentation was not a final performance specification. Xbox’s developer interview explains the setting and production context at Xbox Wire.
Strategically, the reveal restored a dormant flagship franchise to the center of Xbox’s identity while signaling a project beyond the immediate 2024–25 release calendar.

DOOM: The Dark Ages broadened Bethesda’s role
DOOM: The Dark Ages was the other major surprise. Its 2025 target positioned Bethesda’s id Software as a central source of future tentpole releases, complementing the already announced Indiana Jones and Starfield content. It was announced for Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5, an example of Microsoft emphasizing broad software distribution rather than relying solely on console exclusivity.
How strong was the first-party roadmap?
| Game | Showcase status | Timing announced? | What it signaled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Ops 6 | Gameplay reveal and separate Direct | October 25, 2024 | Game Pass’s major day-one test |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 | Release presentation | November 19, 2024 | Premium simulation across console and PC |
| Fable | New trailer | 2025 | Major Xbox RPG revival |
| DOOM: The Dark Ages | World premiere | 2025 | Bethesda tentpole |
| Perfect Dark | First gameplay reveal | Not stated | Long-term confidence in a revived franchise |
| State of Decay 3 | New trailer and gameplay direction | Not stated | Co-operative survival pillar |
| Gears of War: E-Day | Surprise reveal | Not stated | Long-term franchise anchor |
The presentation therefore worked better as a roadmap of development than as a complete release schedule. It gave viewers confidence that multiple teams were producing substantial games, but several of the most anticipated projects remained undated.
What the showcase said about exclusivity
The event did not present a formal policy speech about exclusives. Instead, its platform choices illustrated Microsoft’s changing approach. Black Ops 6 was announced for PlayStation as well as Xbox and PC, and DOOM: The Dark Ages was listed for PlayStation 5 in addition to Xbox and PC. Xbox-owned games were increasingly framed as part of an ecosystem spanning console, Windows, cloud and, in selected cases, competing consoles.
That approach can expand the audience and software revenue, but it weakens the old hardware argument that major Xbox-owned games are available only on an Xbox console. “Xbox exclusive” is consequently ambiguous: it may mean console exclusive, ecosystem exclusive or simply a game published by Xbox. The showcase provided evidence of broader distribution, not an official declaration that Xbox had abandoned exclusives.

New Xbox hardware for holiday 2024
Microsoft announced three Xbox Series X|S configurations for the 2024 holiday season:
- A 1TB Xbox Series S in Robot White.
- An all-digital Xbox Series X.
- A 2TB Xbox Series X Special Edition in Galaxy Black.
Microsoft said the new models retained the same core speed and performance as the existing generation. They were configuration and storage choices, not a next-generation Xbox announcement. Availability and regional pricing were to vary by market; the announcement did not establish a universal price reduction. Details were published in the official recap.
The questions Xbox still did not answer
What makes Xbox hardware essential?
More games on PlayStation can increase reach, while a strong Game Pass catalogue can make Xbox consoles and PCs attractive. The unresolved trade-off is hardware differentiation: Microsoft did not explain why a consumer should choose an Xbox console when many Xbox-published games can be played elsewhere.
Can Game Pass economics support day-one blockbusters?
Black Ops 6 demonstrated the subscription’s value, but the showcase did not provide a long-term financial model for putting major annual releases into Game Pass. It also did not explain how consistently Activision Blizzard’s catalogue would be integrated.

What about studio stability?
The presentation could not resolve concerns surrounding layoffs, studio closures and the management of Microsoft’s enlarged first-party portfolio. Nor did it provide definitive updates for every dormant project, including Everwild and Contraband.
Where was Halo?
There was no major new Halo announcement. That absence is not proof of cancellation or a change in ownership priorities, but it was notable in a showcase intended to communicate Xbox’s long-term identity.
What the event means for a potential buyer
The showcase makes different choices sensible for different players:
- Consider Game Pass if you expect to play several included releases across Xbox, PC or cloud, especially if you wanted day-one access to Black Ops 6. Check the live plan, price, country and device coverage at Xbox’s official Game Pass page.
- Consider Series X if you want the highest-performance Series-generation console or still use discs. See the current product information at Xbox Series X.
- Consider Series S for a lower-cost, digital-only entry point, accepting less storage and a lower performance ceiling. See Xbox Series S.
- Buy individual games if you play only one or two releases a year, want permanent ownership, or prefer physical editions and DLC bundles.
Do not buy hardware solely because a trailer looked impressive, and do not assume every announced game is exclusive to Xbox or included in Game Pass.
Verdict: a great software show, an incomplete strategy explanation
Measured as a games presentation, the Xbox Games Showcase was highly effective. It supplied dated releases, showed variety across RPGs, shooters, simulation, horror and survival games, introduced Gears of War: E-Day and DOOM: The Dark Ages, confirmed day-one Game Pass for Black Ops 6, and demonstrated that Microsoft was still investing in Xbox hardware.
Measured as an explanation of Xbox’s future business, it was less complete. Microsoft showed a strategy built around games, subscriptions, PC, cloud and broader distribution, but left the role of the console, the long-term economics of Game Pass and the fate of several undated projects unresolved. The clearest conclusion is therefore two-part: Xbox’s software pipeline looked stronger than it had in years, while Xbox’s hardware-and-exclusivity identity remained unsettled.
