DOOM: The Dark Ages is worth buying if you want a focused, single-player Doom campaign built around blocking, parrying and forward momentum rather than DOOM Eternal’s constant aerial speed. The Shield Saw gives every fight a new defensive rhythm, while cinematic prequel storytelling, mech and dragon set pieces add scale. That heavier cadence is refreshing for some players and restrictive for others, so your reaction to the Shield Saw is the deciding factor.
What is DOOM: The Dark Ages?
DOOM: The Dark Ages is id Software and Bethesda’s single-player first-person shooter and a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. It launched on May 15, 2025. The official Steam description presents it as an epic, cinematic origin story for the DOOM Slayer, set in a dark-fantasy world with science-fiction technology and built on idTech.
The campaign remains recognisably Doom: aggressive first-person demon combat, heavy weapons and large arenas. Its major change is that survival is no longer defined primarily by evasive movement. The game asks you to read attacks, raise your shield, parry at the right moment and keep pressing forward.
How the Shield Saw changes combat
The Shield Saw combines a defensive shield with a saw-blade attack, making it the centre of the game’s combat language. PC Gamer described the design as a gun ballet that “revolves around the Shield Saw.” Instead of treating defence as a last resort, The Dark Ages makes it part of your normal attack cycle.

Blocking and parrying
Blocking gives you a way to absorb or manage incoming pressure, while a correctly timed parry creates an opening to counterattack. Shield upgrades can also trigger damage after successful parries, giving you a reason to learn enemy timing rather than simply hold the shield indefinitely. The result is a more deliberate loop: identify an attack, defend, convert that defence into damage and resume your assault.
A heavier rhythm than Eternal
Reviews from Ars Technica, PC Gamer and Metacritic’s critic excerpts consistently identify the shield, parries and dodges as the defining innovation. The trade-off is speed. DOOM Eternal emphasised aerial movement, rapid repositioning and constant weapon switching; The Dark Ages gives you more control over the space immediately in front of you and a stronger sense of impact, but less of Eternal’s unrestricted mobility.

If you enjoy learning attack patterns and turning enemy aggression against them, the Shield Saw makes the campaign feel distinctive. If your favourite part of Eternal was launching into the air, dashing across arenas and solving fights through movement alone, the reduced mobility can feel like a constraint.
DOOM: The Dark Ages vs. DOOM Eternal
| Category | DOOM: The Dark Ages | DOOM Eternal |
|---|---|---|
| Core combat feel | Heavier, forward-driving combat built around the Shield Saw, blocking and parries. | Faster combat centred on aerial movement, rapid repositioning and weapon management. |
| Defence | Shield timing and parries are an active part of your attack loop. | Survival relies more heavily on movement, dashes and enemy-resource management. |
| Mobility | More grounded and controlled; less emphasis on constant aerial traversal. | Highly mobile, with frequent airborne movement and rapid arena navigation. |
| Story approach | A more explicit cinematic prequel and Slayer origin story. | Combat remains the dominant focus, with lore delivered around the action. |
| Large-scale variety | Includes mech and dragon sequences alongside standard first-person combat. | Primarily built around its established arena-shooter movement and combat systems. |
Neither approach replaces the other. The Dark Ages is best understood as a different combat priority: control and timing over maximum speed.

Story, tone and campaign structure
The game expands Doom’s mythology through a cinematic prequel about the Slayer. That means more explicit world-building and a clearer sense of historical context than a purely arcade-style campaign. The official Steam listing calls it a story worthy of the Slayer’s legend, and critics generally acknowledge the increased narrative attention.
Reception to that emphasis is less uniform than reception to the combat. Some reviewers welcome the added lore, while others feel that story focus can interrupt the directness that defines Doom. You can therefore expect more authored presentation without assuming that the writing is the campaign’s strongest element; the broad critical consensus remains centred on combat.

Mechs, dragons and spectacle
Mech and dragon sections provide a change of scale and pace. They are variety elements inside a campaign whose main identity is still first-person demon fighting, rather than separate game modes that replace the core loop. Their value is in breaking up the arena rhythm and giving the Slayer a larger-than-life role within the setting.

Who should buy it?
Buy or play it through Game Pass if you:
- Want a polished, single-player Doom campaign rather than a live-service structure.
- Like parries, defensive timing and close-range counterattacks.
- Prefer heavier weapon impact and a more controlled push through arenas.
- Want more explicit prequel lore and cinematic presentation.
- Enjoy campaign variety such as mech and dragon sequences.
Think twice if you:
- Want Eternal’s maximum aerial speed and constant movement options.
- Prefer Doom with minimal narrative interruption.
- Dislike timing-based defence or do not want blocking to shape every encounter.
Final verdict
DOOM: The Dark Ages is a strong recommendation for players willing to trade some of DOOM Eternal’s mobility for shield-led control. Its combat is the reason to play: the Shield Saw, parries and heavier cadence give the prequel a clear identity, while its cinematic lore and oversized set pieces broaden the campaign without replacing the first-person demon fights. Game Pass subscribers have the lowest-friction way to find out whether that rhythm suits them; everyone else should compare current platform pricing before buying.
