It can also add ping, jitter, packet loss, strict NAT and longer matchmaking. No reliable evidence shows that a VPN guarantees “bot lobbies” or bypasses skill-based matchmaking (SBMM).
The March 31, 2024 article titled “We tested a Warzone VPN & MW3 VPN” promotes SwaggVPN, but does not publish test locations, baseline latency, sample sizes, match records, controls or reproducible results. Its claims should therefore be treated as marketing, not as an independent test.
What a VPN changes in Call of Duty
Without a VPN, your console or PC sends traffic through your ISP toward Activision’s services and the selected game server. With a VPN, the first leg goes to the VPN server; that server becomes the apparent public IP before traffic continues toward Activision.
- Public IP: the address visible to online services. A VPN replaces your home IP with the VPN endpoint’s address.
- Physical location: where you and your console or PC actually are. A VPN does not move the player.
- VPN location: the endpoint chosen in the VPN app. It is not automatically the location of the Call of Duty server.
- Game-server location: the data centre handling the match. The game may prioritise latency, population and other signals over the VPN country.
- Ping: round-trip delay, measured in milliseconds. Lower is generally better.
- Jitter: variation in delay. High jitter causes inconsistent hit registration and movement.
- Packet loss: traffic that never arrives. Even a small sustained loss can cause rubber-banding or disconnects.
- NAT type: the way your network accepts connections. A VPN can change it or make it stricter, affecting voice chat and matchmaking.
- SBMM and matchmaking region: changing an IP is not proof that the game’s skill, playlist, party, input or latency signals have been bypassed.
Encryption protects traffic between you and the VPN server. It does not hide every game-level signal or guarantee a different opponent pool.

Can a VPN lower Warzone or MW3 ping?
Sometimes, but only when the route is the problem. A VPN can help if your ISP is using a congested or inefficient path, if the provider has better peering with the relevant infrastructure, or if an endpoint is near both you and the game server. It is more likely to hurt when the endpoint is distant, overloaded or creates a geographic detour.
Test the same connection before and after changing only the VPN. Use in-game latency rather than a browser speed test, because a speed-test server is not necessarily the Call of Duty server.
What to measure
- Direct-connection ping, jitter and packet loss
- VPN ping, jitter and packet loss for each endpoint
- Download and upload speed
- Matchmaking time and disconnects
- NAT type and voice-chat behaviour
- Server region when the game exposes it
A nearby endpoint that lowers latency is useful for route troubleshooting. A distant endpoint chosen for a marketed “easy” region is usually a poor latency trade-off.

Can a VPN create easier Warzone or MW3 lobbies?
That claim is unproven and unreliable. VPN comparisons commonly mention countries such as Kenya, Egypt, India, Turkey, Cambodia or Argentina, but a different result can instead reflect time of day, local population, playlist, crossplay, input method, party composition, account history, ranked versus casual mode and whether the game prioritises latency over geography.

A VPN may alter the pool of potential players or the route used for matchmaking, but there is no dependable guarantee that it will produce easier matches. Do not label ordinary lower-skilled human opponents “bots” unless the game confirms that bots were present.
One comparison article describes “bot lobbies” as a goal while acknowledging that matchmaking manipulation may be considered cheating or an exploit. That is not controlled evidence that the VPN caused easier opponents. A single easy match is anecdotal, not a repeatable result.

How a credible VPN test should be run
Any review claiming a matchmaking or latency advantage should publish its method. A defensible protocol would include:
- Use the same console or PC, router, ISP, account, platform, playlist and party arrangement.
- Record direct-connection results first.
- Test at least three nearby endpoints and one or two distant endpoints.
- Use the same protocol where possible, preferably WireGuard or the provider’s equivalent.
- Repeat during peak and off-peak hours.
- Separate latency testing from lobby-difficulty testing.
- For matchmaking claims, complete at least 10–20 matches per condition and keep the match count equal.
- Record playlist, input method, party size, matchmaking time, disconnects, reported skill indicators and whether players were actually bots.
Results should identify whether differences are statistically meaningful or merely personal impressions. The promotional SwaggVPN article does not provide this information, so its “minimal latency” and easier-lobby promises cannot be independently verified.

Warzone and Modern Warfare III are not a special VPN category
“MW3 VPN” means using a general-purpose VPN while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. It is not a distinct technical product. Warzone and MW3 can differ in population, server behaviour and matchmaking activity, so a result in one game should not be transferred automatically to the other.

Does a VPN protect against DDoS attacks?
A VPN can hide your home IP from some other players and place the VPN provider between your connection and the internet. That may reduce direct exposure, but it is not guaranteed DDoS protection.
- The VPN provider itself can be attacked or become a bottleneck.
- The game server can still disconnect you.
- Your IP may already have leaked through another application, party service or earlier connection.
- A VPN cannot fix weak Wi‑Fi, bufferbloat or an overloaded home network.
- Strict NAT or filtered traffic can create new connectivity problems.
Activision enforcement and VPN risk
Activision’s Security and Enforcement Policy page was updated July 31, 2026. It applies to Call of Duty titles beginning with Modern Warfare (2019), later console and PC titles, and Warzone Mobile. The policy says attempts to hide, disguise or obfuscate identity or hardware may result in permanent suspension. It also addresses circumventing security systems and unauthorised software used to manipulate gameplay, statistics or game data or gain an unfair advantage. Possible actions include limited matchmaking, ranked restrictions, temporary or permanent bans and stat resets.
The policy does not expressly say that every ordinary commercial VPN is automatically bannable. A VPN used for privacy or route troubleshooting is different from using one to manipulate matchmaking, evade enforcement or gain an unfair advantage. Activision also lists unsupported applications, IP flooders and lag switches as sanctionable examples. Never combine a VPN with cheating software, packet manipulation or tools intended to evade RICOCHET or other security systems. RICOCHET protects Modern Warfare III, Modern Warfare II, Vanguard and Warzone; listed PC titles use a kernel-level driver.

Frequent country changes can also trigger account-security checks or unusually slow matchmaking. No provider can promise that a particular setup is enforcement-proof.

Install the provider’s app, choose a nearby endpoint and connect before launching the game. Test WireGuard first where available. Avoid multi-hop modes and unnecessary filtering while diagnosing latency.
PlayStation and Xbox
Most consoles do not run a native VPN app. Common options are a VPN-compatible router, manual router configuration or Internet Connection Sharing from a VPN-connected PC. Surfshark documents router or manual setup for unsupported consoles; PIA advertises gaming and router support.
Router coverage applies to the whole household and can reduce throughput or create double NAT. Check NAT type, voice chat, crossplay and other devices after connecting.

Promotional monthly equivalents are not lifetime costs. Check the upfront charge, renewal amount, billing term and refund conditions before subscribing. “No logs” is a provider policy claim, not proof that no operational data is ever processed; read the provider’s current privacy documentation.
What to do when the VPN makes gameplay worse
- Disconnect it and confirm whether the problem disappears.
- Switch to a nearby endpoint.
- Try WireGuard or IKEv2 where available.
- Disable multi-hop, ad blocking, antivirus filtering and traffic inspection.
- Restart the router and game client.
- Check NAT type and platform network status.
- Compare wired Ethernet with Wi‑Fi.
- Stop changing countries during a session to manipulate matchmaking.
- Stop using the VPN if matchmaking becomes unusually slow or the account enters limited matchmaking.
Alternatives that often help more than a VPN
- Use Ethernet instead of congested Wi‑Fi.
- Test and address bufferbloat with router QoS or firmware settings.
- Reboot or replace an overloaded router.
- Ask the ISP to investigate consistently poor routes.
- Use the game’s nearest available region where selection is supported.
- Play during periods with healthier local populations.
Bottom line
Buy a VPN for privacy, home-IP protection or route troubleshooting—not for a guaranteed SBMM bypass. Choose the nearest endpoint, measure in-game latency and stability against a direct connection, and accept the policy risk of using any service specifically to manipulate matchmaking. If your direct route is already good, a VPN is more likely to add delay than remove it.
