The four launch characters at a glance
Borderlands 4 launched with four Vault Hunters: Amon, Harlowe, Rafa and Vex. Each class has three signature abilities that function as Action Skills, so your choice shapes more than the character model—it influences your build decisions throughout the campaign.
| Vault Hunter | Best fit for | Combat emphasis | Learning profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amon | Players who want a straightforward heavy fighter | Close-range pressure and a durable-feeling approach | Generally the clearest starting fantasy |
| Harlowe | Players who enjoy controlling groups | Gravity manipulation, crowd control and elemental interactions | Rewards ability timing and setup |
| Rafa | Shooter fans who prefer familiar gunplay | Weapons-first exo-soldier combat supported by technology | Familiar fundamentals with tactical tools |
| Vex | Players drawn to the Siren identity | Phase abilities and elemental flexibility | Flexible, with more tools to combine |

Which character is best for a first playthrough?
Best straightforward starting point: Amon
Amon is the most natural recommendation if you want to get into fights, stay involved at close range and learn the game without first building elaborate ability combinations. His Forgeknight identity supports an imposing, heavy-fighter fantasy and a forgiving-feeling approach to encounters.

Craft your perfect build with branching skill trees and a deep, rewarding loot chase full of wild weapons and powerful gear.
- FIGHT SOLO OR CO-OP: Wreaking havoc across Kairos is awesome alone and even better with friends in 2-player splitscreen or up to 4-player online co-op.** Borderlands 4 is designed for co-op from the ground up; whether you're hunting for loot, tackling missions, or wandering freely, level scaling and individual difficulty keeps the party together and having fun.
- LESS BORDERS, MORE LANDS: Freely explore a vast and dangerous world rife with warring factions. Hop on your hover bike and ride through lush fields, towering peaks, and deadly deserts full of fearsome enemies, dynamic events, and engaging quests with unforgettable characters. Unite the people of Kairos and ignite a revolution, tackling this adventure however you see fit in a seamless Borderlands experience.
Choose Amon if you value direct engagement, want your character to feel sturdy and would rather concentrate on positioning and shooting than on maintaining a complicated ability setup. This does not establish Amon as the highest-damage class; it is a recommendation based on the feel of his documented role.
Best familiar shooter option: Rafa
Rafa, the Exo-Soldier, suits players who want Borderlands gunplay to remain the center of attention. His technology-assisted identity makes him a good bridge for players coming from conventional shooters: you can prioritize weapons while using tactical or deployable tools to support your attack.

Which Vault Hunter is best for solo play?
All four launch Vault Hunters are valid solo choices. The useful distinction is how much of your survival and damage you want to come from direct weapon handling versus abilities that control space or create advantages.

- Choose Vex if you want mobility and elemental options that let you adapt your approach from fight to fight.

Character-by-character guide
Amon — Forgeknight
Amon is the imposing close-range choice. His appeal is immediate: close the distance, commit to the fight and rely on a robust-feeling combat identity. He is a strong first pick for players who dislike fragile, highly conditional characters or who want their abilities to reinforce a physical frontline role.
Rank #4
- BE A BADASS: Become an unstoppable force of battle, blasting through enemies with an all-new arsenal of outrageous weaponry. Move across the Borderlands like never before—double jumping, gliding, dodging, grappling, and more—dealing death from every direction. Explode each encounter with devastating Action Skills that unleash your Vault Hunter's unique abilities.
- Combat distance: Close range.
- Damage preference: Direct fighting, with abilities supporting the engagement.
- Defensive feel: More forgiving for players who like staying in the action.
- Choose him when: You want the simplest heavy-fighter fantasy.
Harlowe — Gravitar
Harlowe is built for players who enjoy shaping the battlefield. Gravity manipulation and crowd control let you think about where enemies are, when to group them and how elemental effects interact with your abilities. The payoff comes from setup and timing rather than from treating every encounter as a pure aim test.
- Combat distance: Flexible, depending on how you arrange enemies and effects.
- Damage preference: Ability-driven and elemental interactions alongside weapons.
- Control: Strong appeal for players who like managing groups.
- Choose her when: You enjoy planning an encounter before cashing in the payoff.
Rafa — Exo-Soldier
Rafa is the weapons-first option. His Exo-Soldier identity makes him a natural fit for players who want technology to enhance familiar shooter fundamentals rather than replace them. Use your arsenal as the foundation, then add tactical tools when a fight calls for extra pressure or utility.

Best Value
- BORDERLANDS 4 — Enter Kairos in Borderlands 4, a looter shooter packed with Vault Hunters, wild weapons, and action against a ruthless tyrant.
- FOUR VAULT HUNTERS — Play as one of four new Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities unleashed through powerful Action Skills.
- BUILD AND LOOT — Shape your playstyle with branching skill trees, then hunt for wild weapons and powerful gear across a deep loot chase.
- BREAK THE TIMEKEEPER’S ORDER — Battle the oppressive Timekeeper as a world-altering catastrophe unleashes Mayhem across Kairos.
- EXPLORE KAIROS — Ride a hover bike through lush fields, towering peaks, and deadly deserts while taking on quests, dynamic events, and warring factions.
- Combat distance: Most comfortable at the range your weapon loadout supports.
- Damage preference: Gun damage first, technology-assisted abilities second.
- Complexity: Accessible if you already understand looter-shooter weapon swapping and positioning.
- Choose him when: You want an exosuit-and-firearms fantasy.
Vex — Siren
Vex is the choice for players who want Borderlands’ returning Siren archetype. Her phase abilities and elemental flexibility provide more ways to change how an encounter unfolds, making her a good fit if you like adapting your tools instead of committing to one narrow routine.
- Combat distance: Adaptable.
- Damage preference: A mix of weapons, phase abilities and elemental effects.
- Mobility and control: Attractive to players who value options and repositioning.
- Choose her when: You want a flexible Siren playstyle, not because any source proves she is the strongest.
Should you start with C4SH?
C4SH is not one of the four launch choices. He is a post-launch Rogue Vault Hunter added through the first paid Story Pack and is playable across the entire game. His abilities are intentionally unpredictable, using chance-based card and dice effects.
That design makes C4SH a better starting point for experienced players who enjoy uncertainty, improvisation and runs that do not always unfold the same way. If you are learning Borderlands 4 or want a dependable first build, begin with Amon, Harlowe, Rafa or Vex; return to C4SH when deliberate randomness sounds like the feature rather than a risk.
A quick decision checklist
- Want to fight up close and feel hard to dislodge? Pick Amon.
- Want gravity, crowd control and elemental setup? Pick Harlowe.
- Want guns to remain the main event? Pick Rafa.
- Want Siren phase abilities and elemental flexibility? Pick Vex.
- Want deliberate randomness and already own the relevant Story Pack? Consider C4SH.
What your choice changes
Every class offers three signature abilities, so selecting a Vault Hunter determines the ability framework around which you will develop a build. Weapons, gear and later experimentation still matter, but the class establishes the combat language you will use most often: Amon’s direct pressure, Harlowe’s control, Rafa’s technology-supported shooting, Vex’s phase and elemental flexibility, or C4SH’s chance-driven effects.
