How to Install God of War III on PC with RPCS3

God of War III has no supported native PC installer. Use RPCS3 with Sony's official PS3 firmware and a dump of your own lawful disc or digital copy, then follow the correct disc or PSN installation path.

There is no supported native PC installer for God of War III. The researched PC method is to emulate the PlayStation 3 release with RPCS3: install RPCS3, install official PS3 system software from Sony, and load a game dump made from your own legally obtained copy. Do not use downloaded ISO, PKG, RAP, or firmware files.

What you need

  • A 64-bit Windows, Linux, macOS, or FreeBSD computer supported by RPCS3.
  • RPCS3 downloaded from its official project site.
  • Official PS3 system software from Sony’s PlayStation support page. Sony lists version 4.93; its PC transfer instructions require at least 200 MB of space (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2026).
  • Your own lawful God of War III disc or digital purchase.
  • Either a PS3 that can dump the game or a compatible computer Blu-ray drive for the disc-dump method.
  • A keyboard, controller, or both. A USB controller is generally more suitable for this console action game.

RPCS3’s desktop guidance lists OpenGL 4.3-or-newer graphics support and 4 GB RAM as absolute minimums. It warns that CPUs without AVX2, or with fewer than four cores and eight threads, are expected to perform very badly overall. For laptops, RPCS3 recommends an eight-core/16-thread H-series CPU and a dedicated Vulkan-capable GPU for an optimal experience; that is guidance, not a guarantee for this particular game.

Choose the lawful game-data route

Route What you need Key installation detail
Dump from your PS3 Your PS3 and your own disc or digital copy Transfer the resulting PS3 game data to the PC.
Dump a disc on the PC A compatible Blu-ray drive, your own disc, and an available IRD file RPCS3 says the drive should use a Mediatek chipset and a +6 read offset. Examples include LG BE16NU50 and ASUS BC-12D2HT, but revisions differ, so verify the exact model revision before buying.
Use PSN data Your own legally obtained PSN title data and matching license Install the package through RPCS3 and place the matching license in the specified RPCS3 folder.

PS3 titles cannot lawfully be distributed online by RPCS3. Dumping requirements and copyright rules vary by country, so check the law where you live. A compatible Blu-ray drive is needed only if you choose to dump a disc directly on the PC; a PS3 can create the dump instead.

Install RPCS3 and official PS3 firmware

  1. Download the current RPCS3 build for your operating system from the official RPCS3 project site and extract it to a folder you control. RPCS3 provides separate platform requirements for 64-bit Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD.
  2. Download the PS3 system-software file from Sony’s official PlayStation support page. Do not use a firmware mirror. RPCS3 cannot distribute Sony’s firmware for legal reasons because the emulator depends on proprietary PS3 system libraries.
  3. Open RPCS3 and select File > Install Firmware.
  4. Select the firmware file you downloaded from Sony and wait for the installation to finish. Restart RPCS3 if it asks you to do so.

Install a disc dump

A normal PS3 disc dump includes a PS3_GAME folder and PS3_DISC.SFB, with a PS3_UPDATE folder sometimes present. Keep the dump in its original structure.

God of War III: Remastered (PS4)
  • Beautifully rendered at 1080p and running at 60 frames per second, God of War III Remastered is ready for the next generation
  • The brand new photo mode will allow players to freeze the jaw-dropping action to edit, save and share photos.
  • God of War III Remastered shows off realistic muscle contours, detailed facial expressions and new heightened levels of brutality and gore
  1. Copy the complete title folder to RPCS3’s games directory, or store it elsewhere outside dev_hdd0/game.
  2. Start RPCS3. If the game does not appear in the list, choose File > Boot Game and select the dump’s game folder.
  3. Let RPCS3 identify the title, then use the live RPCS3 compatibility entry for God of War III as your reference before changing settings.

Do not rename individual files or move only the PS3_GAME folder without its disc structure. A malformed or incomplete dump can look like an emulator problem when the data itself is at fault.

Install a PSN version

  1. Place the PSN title’s installed folder structure in RPCS3’s dev_hdd0/game directory.
  2. In RPCS3, select File > Install Packages/Raps/Edats and install the package files belonging to your own purchase.
  3. Place the matching .rap license in dev_hdd0/home/00000001/exdata/.
  4. Ensure any update you install matches the game’s region ID. A region mismatch can prevent an update from applying or cause launch problems.

Use only licenses and packages generated from or legitimately obtained with your own PSN ownership. The installation path does not make someone else’s downloaded game files lawful.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting

God of War III appears in RPCS3’s compatibility database, but the status and performance can change as emulator builds change. Open the live compatibility entry for the title and note the tested build, reported status, and any game-specific notes before copying settings from an old guide. RPCS3’s FAQ directs users to that database because support varies by game.

Performance is highly dependent on CPU architecture, GPU backend, drivers, resolution, and the RPCS3 build. Meeting the minimum specifications does not guarantee playable results, and laptop power or thermal limits can reduce performance.

God of War III - Playstation 3 (Renewed)
  • True to the series roots, the four pillars of game play - brutal combat, intricate puzzles, exploration of awe-inspiring worlds
  • God of War III is the epic conclusion to the Greek mythological trilogy, which will complete Kratos' story
  • New deadly weapons like the Cestus, powerful metal gauntlets with devastating strength, and other brutal instruments of war
  • The menacing creatures of Greek mythology can now be manipulated against their will, to cross chasms, inflict blind rage against enemies
  • God of War III picks up exactly where God of War II left off ? Kratos must take his quest for vengeance to the very stronghold of the Zeus.

Configure keyboard and controller input

  1. Open RPCS3’s pad or input configuration screen and select a keyboard handler, a controller handler, or a mixed setup.
  2. Map the DualShock-style controls to your keyboard or USB controller and save the profile.
  3. Test every face button, shoulder button, stick, and motion-sensitive action in a menu before starting the campaign.

RPCS3 supports keyboard input and mixed keyboard/controller configurations, and its FAQ states that up to seven controllers can be connected concurrently. A controller is optional, not a requirement.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

RPCS3 says firmware is missing

Download the firmware again from Sony’s PlayStation support page and use File > Install Firmware. Firmware from an unofficial mirror is not a supported substitute.

The game is not listed

For a disc dump, confirm that the folder still contains PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.SFB, then use File > Boot Game. A disc dump belongs outside dev_hdd0/game; that location is for installed PSN content.

A PSN title asks for activation or a license

Confirm that the package and .rap belong to the same title and region, and that the license is in dev_hdd0/home/00000001/exdata/. Do not substitute a license downloaded for somebody else’s copy.

  • The God of War Collection includes: God of War and God of War II on one Blu-ray Disc for play on the PlayStation 3.
  • Rediscover two of the most highly praised games ever developed for the PS2 in advance of the upcoming release of God of War III on PS3.
  • Remastered in high-definition at a resolution of 720p and including anti-aliased graphics for 60 frames per second gameplay.
  • Full PlayStation Network (PSN) Trophies support for each game.

An update will not install

Check the game’s region ID. RPCS3’s instructions require updates to match the installed title’s region.

The game runs badly

Check the current compatibility entry first, then verify that RPCS3 is using your dedicated GPU and a current driver. A CPU lacking AVX2 or having fewer than four cores/eight threads is expected to perform very badly overall according to RPCS3’s guidance. If you are on a laptop, use the manufacturer’s high-performance power mode and keep the system adequately cooled.

The disc cannot be dumped

Verify the exact Blu-ray-drive revision, not just the retail model name. RPCS3’s PC-dumping guidance calls for a Mediatek chipset, a +6 read offset, and an available IRD file; not every revision of an otherwise similar drive qualifies.

What “installing” means in this case

You are installing an emulator and Sony’s system software, then loading your own PS3 game data. You are not downloading a PC port, and RPCS3 does not provide God of War III, PS3 firmware, ISO images, PKG files, or RAP licenses. Once the firmware and lawful dump are in place, launch the title from RPCS3 using the game list or File > Boot Game.
